“The Shotgun House” has only one bedroom and one bathroom in its 1,050 square feet. It has been available to rent on Airbnb since about May 2017 at a cost of $325 per night. But the owners are now ready to part with it and are asking almost $950,000 in exchange for the home. Calling all Fixer Upper fans! You can spend the night in a house designed by Chip and Joanna Gaines. This landmark Waco home from the HGTV hit series’ third season, better known as The Shotgun House, is up for rent on Airbnb. For $325 a night, you can rent out a piece of Fixer Upper history. This isn’t the first Fixer Upper home to hit the market. Despite Chip and Jo trying to stop clients from renting the renovated homes, other properties, like the Mailander, are being rented out. But The Shotgun House is one of the Gaines’ most jaw-dropping transformations in the show’s history. Inspired by the shotgun houses of the Gulf Coast, architect Zui Ng set out to create a modern version that could adapt to any lot. Calling it the Shotgun Chameleon, he built a prototype home for his family in Houston’s Fourth Ward (Freedmen’s Town). Reflecting the buildings on both sides, it is clad in wood and metal, which are slatted to allow for light and breeze to enter while simultaneously allowing for privacy from the apartments next door. The “Chameleon” in the title refers both to the home's adaptability to place as well as to moments in time. Ng designed it to divide into separate apartments to reflect his changing family. When he first moved in, he left the interior stairway open and his mother lived downstairs. Now the stairwell is closed and he, his wife and young daughter live in the 750-square-foot upstairs. The downstairs is rented out as a separate flat, now accessible via an exterior door. “There’s different ways to live free. I’ve seen people, they move to the middle of nowhere and they move into a car or something to live free. That’s one way. Me and my wife, right now, we are kind of living free The rent for the bottom unit actually pays for the mortgage.” In order to keep the build affordable, Ng (ZDES Studio) and his wife created most of the interior themselves: building cabinets and furniture (some hacked from IKEA and Home Depot), staining the plywood, designing and installing steel countertops from leftover siding, and even creating wooden, sliding pocket doors. “With the digital age we lost a lot of ability that our ancestors used to have, with your hands… This house was built $180,000 less than what the contractor asked for so this is like another master degree for me. I learned to do subcontracting.” ZDES Studio: http://zdes.webs.com/s-t-u-d-i-o Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/chameleon-shotgun-house-blends-modernvernacular-on-a-budget/

In small town on the outskirts of Basel, Switzerland, where the weather is highly changeable and the views are impacted by rural sprawl, architect Tito Herlach designed a semi-transparent home to give a family of five access to, and protection from their surroundings. The home mimics the topology of a half-timbered farmhouse, but it\s wood frame is covered in corrugated plastic on the south and west sides which act as a “semi-permeable membrane”. At the front entrance this membrane is the only source of light to the unheated entryway behind it. Only the north and east sides of the home are covered in more insulating, opaque materials. The interior footprint is small, relative to conventional Swiss homes, but it feels larger thanks to an indoor/outdoor space enclosed in wood framing, translucent plastic and a mechanically-movable screen. The interior was built in prefab wood panels, supported by one centered concrete wall which serves to anchor the open floor plan. Two years ago, Debra and her family lived in a nearly 2000 square foot home on an acre and a half of land. Then her husband lost his job and they began to work 4 jobs between them to pay the mortgage, until one day they remembered they had a choice. Before having their son, Debra and her husband Gary had spent 9 years living in very tiny homes in South America. Living small hadn't felt like a sacrifice, but a way to stay focused on what is important. They decided they wanted to get back to that. They stopped working so hard, sold or gave away all of their extra stuff and began looking for the perfect tiny home. Debra had always liked the Mississippi shotgun style homes, and one day, while browsing craigslist, they noticed an ad for a local Arkansas company custom building tiny homes for a price that could mean an end to house payments. Six weeks and $15,000 later they had their own fully paid-off dwelling. Today, Debra, her husband and 13-year-old son live in a 320-square foot home that is not a sacrifice, but exactly what they need. Kevin and Annissa Coy recently decided to sell most of their possessions and move out to The Pacific Northwest. They bought an affordable piece of land next to the ocean and began building a small home. Not tiny, but still very small. About the size of a two-car garage. All of this is being done without borrowing money to remain debt-free. I'd like to thank Keven and Anissa for being kind enough to share what they are up to which will hopefully inspire others to do the same. A “shotgun house” is a type of small house in which the rooms are lined up in a single row from front to back. A typical shotgun floor plan had the living room in front, a bedroom or two in the middle, and kitchen at the back. Since there was no hallway, you’d have to pass through the bedrooms to go from the living room to the kitchen. Some historians say that the name “shotgun house” refers to the fact that if all the doors are open, a shotgun blast could pass straight through the house. Shotgun houses were a very common form of small house in the 1800’s, with thousands of them built across the United States. They were especially popular in the southern states, where the single-room width allowed good cross ventilation of every room. The nicely-preserved example shown here is located in the Irish Channel neighborhood of central New Orleans, and like many shotgun houses it has high ceilings to aid in cooling. While shotgun houses were mainly built as affordable housing for working class families, they were often dressed up with mass-produced brackets and other ornamentation. This one is relatively fancy, built in the Greek Revival style with a prominent temple-front pediment. This shotgun house has one bedroom and is roughly 400 ft2 (37 m2). It has obviously been renovated, probably more than once. Plumbing was brought in and a bathroom was added to the back. The wall between the front two rooms was removed, creating an open living space and allowing the kitchen counter peninsula to double as a dining table. If visiting New Orleans, you can rent this cottage through Airbnb. Enjoy the photos! Since the 1830s shotgun houses (AKA shotgun shacks, shotgun cottages, shotgun huts, “long houses”) have been popular in New Orleans. Usually no more than 12 feet wide, these “long houses” are long and skinny with rooms lined up in a straight line such that if you fired a shot through the front wall it could exit the back door without touching a wall. In 19th century New Orleans, shotgun cottages were a common home for century immigrant workers. They could be easily and cheaply constructed by inexperienced builders since their simple roofs don’t require gables. They are also ideal for hot climates; by opening the back and front doors, a breeze will flow through the home unobstructed. We visited Lillian and her 400-square-feet in the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans (home to many 19th century Irish, Italian and German immigrants). She gives us a tour and talks about the possible West African origins of the architectural style (http://www.datacenterresearch.org/pre-katrina/tertiary/shotgun.html) and the different variations of shotgun home: “double-barrel” (two shotguns with a shared wall) and “camelback” (a shotgun with a second floor at the rear). Architect, artist, designer Julio Garcia had been designing plans for shipping container homes for a decade before he found the perfect place to build one: on a long, narrow stretch of his property in Savannah, Georgia. “I’m a big believer we should be adapting to the environment… I remember walking out and looking at the yard and thinking oh my god the land is calling for this linear design.” He picked up two 40 foot shipping containers from the Port of Savannah and, thanks to much advance planning, he was able to install them without removing one tree from his property. He offset the two boxes, cut out the interior container walls and added I-beams, a shed roof and clerestory windows in the center to provide plenty of daylighting. “There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re inside a container so in the design we had to address that. I’ve been in a couple of projects and they don’t function very well and you’re like, ‘Oh, I still feel like I’m in a metal box’.” Garcia believes containers can make for affordable homes: “you could put up a structure like this for about 50K”, but much of the interior was salvaged from other job sites (i.e. the drywall and the kitchen). His Price Street Projects creates plans that are “almost do-it-yourself plans” for shipping container homes and he has installed commercial container spaces, but he’s a big believer that the site should determine the design. http://pricestreetprojects.com/ Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/artist-builds-his-savannah-studio-with-shipping-containers

When Alex Melamed and his wife moved to the tradiational brick and mortar town of Yellow Springs, Ohio they built a home only as big as they needed at the time. Melamed is a builder and could keep costs low while still incorporating high design elements like shou-sugi-ban (charred wood) siding. The tiny square house was affordable to build and to run. It meets Passive House standards relying on “primo” insulation, passive solar and a heat pump when necessary. “Our electric bill was $36 last month,” explains Melamed. cheap building plans custom home cost estimator house in philippines design house plan estimate 46 sqm or approximately 495 sq.ft modern small narrow house for single family residence built on narrow and long block of land. This modern house is a home for newlywed house, so affordable townhouse concept was become main factor when designed and built this small narrow house but not forget about its guarantee essential and necessary functions as a home. Not only low-cost budget but the design also has to calculate future extension plan when the newlywed has bigger and stable household income. For economical reason, steel structure applied building construction of this small two-storey house. The steel structure applied for this economical small townhouse design is not only reduce the load of the building, but also reduce its labor work cost and reduce construction time. Total construction cost to built for this small home was only USD 16,300 (United States Dollar). The interior cost of this simple small house was only USD 5,500. The land cost is zero because it is inheritance real estate. Yup, the design is townhouse or terraced house architecture, but you can make free-standing residence or detached house like this one too. This narrow townhouse built in Vietnam. The townhouse in Hanoi, known as Hanoi Tube House because it has narrow width and depth long block due the real property law. Well, every townhouse usually has long site so open-plan kitchen that direct connected with rear garden landscape plan is common for modern townhouse architecture. Unfortunately, this townhouse site plan is too small so it cannot accommodate backyard garden like townhouse in another countries and cities, such as townhouse in Sydney, or townhouse in Melbourne. Because of that, this Hanoi tube house floor plan layout is liitle bit unique, but awesome. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6n_APBmCjwBhMlpSm7UlWA

When a reader named Katie sent me photos of the house she and her husband Jeff expanded and remodeled in Austin, all I could say was WOW. It started out as a tiny 565-square-foot cottage in the Clarksville Historic District, but they turned it into a two-story with modern farmhouse style. Here’s how it looks now: Hard to believe it’s the same place! Here’s what you see when you step inside today: They worked with Element Five Architecture on this project. Katie explains: While the original structure dating back to 1920 was in poor shape, historic guidelines required that we incorporate it into the new house. The house is a really unique blend of modern, farmhouse, and traditional with high ceilings, open concept living, and vibrant pops of color. The gorgeous floors are 100-year-old reclaimed longleaf pine. There are lots of great built-in spaces throughout the house like these shelves on the upstairs landing: The master bedroom has a painted brick wall and plenty of windows. A sliding barn door opens to reveal the master bath. I have this tile on my bathroom floor and love it but never would’ve thought to take it up the walls like this. They restored a 100-year-old clawfoot tub that was salvaged from another house they remodeled. The Kitchen Before: She says they wanted to incorporate a mix of farmhouse + modern + organic elements. The living room fireplace is wrapped in shiplap. You’ll find some in the powder room, too. They used rift-sawn white oak for the walls in the den. The house sits on a narrow 3,000 square-foot lot in Clarksville, an area founded by freedman Charles Clark in 1871. It’s the oldest surviving post-Civil War freedomtown west of the Mississippi River. https://hookedonhouses.net/2017/09/14/tiny-cottage-remodel-modern-farmhouse/ http://element5architecture.com/ More Videos: #tinyhouse #tinyhouses #smallhouse #cottage #cabin #tiny #tinyhome ============================ #TinyHouseLover is a channel sharing homes under 500 sq ft. Since our last three featured homes were all tiny houses that cater to single-level living, we decided it was time for something different. Today’s home is also tiny, but this one is a three-storey tall and skinny house with the kitchen, living room and bedroom each occupying one of the three floors. The tiny house has just 401 ft2 (37.3 m2) spread over the three storeys. We estimate the outside dimensions as roughly 10’ wide by 15’ long. With three tiny floors, stairs and other circulation space eat up a very large portion of the floor area. Normally with so little floor space, it would hardly be worth having even two storeys. Besides the space they take up, stairs are fairly expensive to build. However this tiny house is an expansion of a garage that likely dates back to 1920, when the adjacent house was built. Our guess is that the owners were allowed to build upwards but were not allowed to expand outside the original garage footprint. You enter the home at the middle level, where the living room and bathroom are. Calling it a living “room” is actually a bit of a stretch, as there isn’t room for much more than a pair of upholstered chairs and a small table. Those sit along the right wall, next to a grouping of three windows, while the bathroom is along the left side of the house. The bathroom is so tiny that there is space for only the toilet and shower. The sink vanity had to be placed outside the bathroom, in a nook by the front door. The front door does swing out, saving a bit of space inside and keeping it from hitting your backside as you brush your teeth. A circulation corridor leads from the front door to the back of the house, where stairs lead up to the bedroom and down to the kitchen. Notice that the stair down is a steep spiral staircase while the one going up is a regular staircase. People often suggest the use of a spiral stair to save space, but be aware that most building codes do not allow them to be used as a fire escape. It was likely allowed here because the kitchen and living room both have direct access to the outside, so occupants can escape the house without using the stairs. That is not true of the top-level bedroom, so a regular stair was required there. The bedroom is certainly snug but it does at least provide enough room for the required furniture and clothes storage. There is even a washer and dryer hidden away in a curtained alcove. Down on the ground floor, the kitchen is compact but complete with the usual appliances. There is also a small dining space, next to a pair of swing-out double doors that replaced the original garage door. We found this tiny house on Airbnb. It is just a block from downtown Asheville, North Carolina, so keep it in mind if you plan to attend the Tiny House Conference being held there in early April. shotgun house (chiefly Southern United States slang) A one-story house in which each room is in a straight alignment with the others, connected by a continuous hallway running from the front to the back of the residence. When our whole family goes to stay in my grandmother's shotgun house in New Orleans, it always feels like we're all right on top of one another. http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/shotgun+house

Real estate broker Jeff White dreamed of transforming used shipping containers into affordable housing. Laughed at by the first architects he approached, he began to work on his concept using a 40-foot-long, 9-foot-6-inches-tall and 8-foot-wide container in the driveway of his Salt Lake City (Utah) home. Being "busted" by a city inspector became the needed publicity for his project and soon after the Salt Lake's mayor was behind him and helped to ease the permits and inspections process. After two years of transformation (including plans, groundwork and permits), what began as two forty-foot high cube containers is now a light and airy 672-square-foot house. It's not dirt cheap- the Sarah House (named for a San Francisco homeless woman whose makeshift home inspired White) is currently on the market for $135,000 (and only to low-income buyers)-, but that price includes a lot of hidden costs. "I spent 40 thousand dollars for the lot and then the infrastructure underneath it, getting the sewer, water lines, probably an additional 25 thousand dollars. So you can see where I'm at, the house is still coming in at 55 to 60 thousand dollars." White thinks with time and economies of scale, he can bring the costs down. To bring natural homes into the 21 Century, architect Tono Mirai designed “Future House”: a home that blends earth building and traditional joinery with modern design. Located in Miura, Kanagawa (about an hour and a half south of Tokyo), this fusion home was built for a businessman and his wife and 3 children. The client wanted a healthy and natural home as an escape from his daily commute to Tokyo, but wanted something modern. Mirai designed a home oriented to the south so that its earthen floors and walls (of traditional Japanese mud plaster) can act as heat sinks for the winter sun. He built vents into the outer walls to naturally control the flow of air. The extensive living roof also acts as an insulator. Mirai calls it a “very natural way” to insulate, noting that the temperature difference between outside and inside the roof can be more than 10 degrees. With all the passive solar and natural venting, the home doesn’t need AC or heating (beyond a small wood stove) and it delivers a natural air quality and “peacefulness” requested by the client. http://www.tonomirai.com/#!wg-english/c1cdj

New Orleans is a city full of history and adventure making it the perfect place for a vacation and if you find yourself heading that way, make sure you book your stay at this charming 400 square foot Shotgun tiny house! Shotgun houses are set up in a straight line from front to back with no hallways which makes for an interesting house to . Supposedly, the “Shotgun” style got its name from the idea that if you stood at the front door, you could shoot a shotgun out the back door due to its clear line of sight. Either way, you typically find the same floorplan in every one: living room to bedroom to kitchen in the back. In this remodeled tiny house, you walk into a large and airy living room with a daybed that can be used for guests. Next is the modern kitchen with gray cabinets and compact appliances. The kitchen has a small dishwasher and refrigerator, and a full-sized stove and oven with a gas cooktop. The countertops are tiled with tons of cabinets both above and below. Past the kitchen is a spacious bedroom with a full-sized bed and room for a small dresser. The bathroom is a nice surprise with a large jetted soaking tub. You also have a large sink vanity with storage below and a toilet. Out the back of the home is a small yard with several chairs to let you enjoy a drink or two with friends after you get back from Bourbon Street.
