Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

06:08
Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. Recently, the Mayo Clinic published startling research showing that 40 percent of pancreatic cancer patients had been diagnosed with diabetes one to two years before discovering they had a pancreatic tumor. Researchers believe the diabetes is caused by tumors that simply haven't been detected yet. The problem is, diabetes is very common, and the majority of diabetes isn't pancreatic cancer, so doctors are trying to develop screening tools to tell the difference. Right now, they say family history is an important clue. If you're diagnosed with diabetes that seems to come on suddenly and you have no family history of diabetes, bring this to your doctor's attention and ask for further screening for pancreatic cancer. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. An enlarged gall bladder. The same blockage of the bile duct that causes jaundice can also cause an enlarged gallbladder, as the bile builds up behind the duct. The good news is that an enlarged gallbladder can be seen on imaging tests, and it may even be possible for a doctor to feel it during a physical exam. Pale, floating, smelly stools. If a pancreatic tumor prevents digestive enzymes from reaching the intestine, the result is an inability to digest fatty foods. So you end up with loose, smelly "floaters" as a result of the excess fat. Doctors say this symptom, in particular, can be an early clue and is too often overlooked. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. New videos everyday! 6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking

05:38
Descriptions of Warning symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer: 6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking It accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in the United States, but 7 percent of cancer deaths. Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of your pancreas, a pear-shaped organn located behind the lower part of your stomach Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect early and it typically spreads rapidly, affecting other parts of the body. This is why it is called a silent disease and you must get cancer pancreas treatment. Here are the top 6 early warning signs of pancreatic cancer that you must know. 1, Jaundice. It is common for people with pancreatic cancer to experience jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the eyes or skin. Jaundice can also cause itchiness on the hands and feet, especially the palms and soles. Any size of tumor located in the head of the pancreas can lead to irregular bile (a yellowish-brown fluid released by your liver to aid digestion) flowing from the gallbladder into the small intestine. This causes excess buildup of bilirubin in the blood, one of the main causes of jaundice. 2, Abdominal and Lower Back Pain. Abdominal as well as back pain are also common symptoms in patients with pancreatic cancer. Usually, the sharp pain is felt in the upper abdomen, which gradually radiates toward the back. Many patients also report the pain is more severe at night and that they get slight relief from the pain by bending forward. If you are experiencing persistent, mild to moderate abdominal pain, consult a doctor or pancreatic cancer clinical trials. Most cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed in patients visiting the emergency room complaining of severe abdominal pain. 3, Nausea and Vomiting. Nausea followed by vomiting is another sign of pancreatic cancer. As the tumor grows, it can block some portions of the digestive tract, which hampers the overall digestion process. Along with nausea and vomiting, you may also experience heartburn and acid reflux. If these symptoms tend to worsen after eating and it is becoming difficult for you to eat anything without throwing up, consult your doctor and get best pancreatic cancer treatment. In advanced cases of pancreatic cancer, surgery may be required to bypass the blockage and improve digestion. 4, Unexplained Weight Loss. Unexplained weight loss is another noticeable warning sign of different types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer. Weight loss often occurs when a tumor spreads to nearby organns and impairs their functioning. This affects proper digestion of nutrients and also leads to poor appetite. Also, due to lack of pancreatic enzymes aiding digestion, dietary fats start passing through the body undigested, which in turn causes weight loss. Furthermore, the cancer cells compete with healthy cells for nutrients you must find a pancreatic cancer therapy. 5, Greasy or Light-Colored Stool. Stools of people suffering from pancreatic cancer have some distinct characteristics. The stools may become large, pale, oily, floating and smelly as the growing tumor prevents the pancreas from releasing its digestive enzymes. As the color and consistency of your stool says a lot about your health, any kind of bowell changes should be reported to your doctor. 6, Changes in urinee Color. Along with changes in your stools, you may also notice changes in your urinee color, despite drinking enough fluid throughout the day. Your urinee may become darker and take on an orange, amber or brown shade. A growing pancreatic tumor can cause bile to get blocked and not released from your body in the way that it should be. Too much bilirubin in the body can get into your urinee and make it dark in appearance. At times, there also may be traces of blood in your urinee. Document all symptoms, and report them to your doctor in as much detail as possible. If your doctor is convinced you have legitimate concerns (and remember, you may have to do some convincing), tests such as an ultrasound, a CT scan, and an endoscopy followed by a biopsy can be used to search for a pancreatic tumor. A blood test is now available for a biomarker called CA 19-9 that is released by pancreatic cancer cells. Unfortunately, by the time CA 19-9 reaches detectable levels, the cancer is usually no longer in the early stage, although the test is useful during treatment and for detecting recurrence. Another biomarker test, CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen), is also not sensitive enough to provide early diagnosis. While tragic early deaths like Steve Jobs' are the hard reality of pancreatic cancer, there are also people living productive lives thanks to an early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Such was the case with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who's still practicing after having a tiny pancreatic tumor surgically removed. Yes, she got "lucky," as she put it -- but she also got a CT scan, which is how the tumor was found. {The information provided on this channel and its videos is for general purposes only and should not be considered as professional advice. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer - 7 Early Warning Signs & Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer The symptoms of exocrine pancreatic cancers and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are often different, so they are described separately. Having one or more of the symptoms below does not mean you have pancreatic cancer. People with pancreatic cancer may experience the following symptoms or signs. Pancreatic cancer can cause diabetes. A pancreatic tumor can interfere with insulin production in the pancreas which can lead to new onset diabetes. More than 80% of people with pancreatitis symptoms eventually experience some abdominal pain as the tumor grows. Pancreatic cancer can cause a dull ache in the upper abdomen radiating to the back. The pain may come and go. A common symptom of pancreatic cancer is steatorrhoea. This is caused by fat in the stools. Stools may be large, pale, oily, smell horrible and can be difficult to flush down the toilet. Pancreatic cancer that blocks the liver's bile duct can cause jaundice. 5 Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

04:03
5 Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms You Should Never Ignore! Signs of pancreatic cancer are hard to spot, and early detection is key to survival. When was the last time you thought about your pancreas? Chances are, you rarely give much thought to this glandular organ, which helps your body digest food and convert it into energy. Located behind your stomach, the pancreas produces insulin and regulates your body's hormones that maintain glucose (blood sugar) levels. Pancreatic cancer warning signs! Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Only about 10 percent of pancreatic cancers have a genetic predisposition, and good screenings for the general population have been difficult to establish, says Dr. Woody. "Tests with the high likelihood of detecting pancreatic cancer, such as endoscopic ultrasound, are invasive, costly, and may carry risks of complications that outweigh their use as screening tests for the average person," New onset of diabetes! "When people with no risk factors for diabetes (no family history, good diet, thin body type) develop new-onset diabetes, or who have a history of well-controlled diabetes suddenly find that it becomes difficult to control, it's reasonable to evaluate why the pancreas may not be functioning as well. Abdominal pain! "The pancreas sits close to a bundle of blood vessels and nerves called the celiac plexus that can cause pain and nerve irritation. But the pain is usually pretty encompassing of your abdomen. "Patients feel pain from the epigastrium (the area just under the sternum) through to their back. Imagine a tire hiked up right under your chest and around your abdomen. Unexplained blood clots! Patients with pancreas cancer are particularly prone to blood clots. While the exact cause is not known, it is believed that cancer cells reduce the proteins the body uses to prevent blood clots. "For people who do not have a reason for the development of a clot-a recent major surgery, trauma (like a car accident), hospitalization, or prolonged period where you are laying still, or a hereditary predisposition to clotting-we recommend making sure you are up to date on your cancer screening and to check in with your doctor about any other symptoms that may help to identify the source of the clotting abnormality. Jaundice! The pancreas is located close to the liver, which produces bile. If a tumor prevents the bile ducts from draining bile appropriately, people may develop elevated levels of bilirubin in their body, which translates into jaundice, or a yellowing of the skin. "This is usually best seen in the white of the eyes, and can also lead to itching all over the body, light-colored stools, and darkened urine. Unexplained weight loss and change in eating patterns! If you experience a loss of appetite or feel full after eating very little, this also may be a sign of pancreatic cancer. The pancreas is nestled right near the small intestine near the first part of the small intestine. Signs Of Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms That You Must Know

03:58
Don't Ignore These Early Symptoms Of Pancreatic Cancer. Pancreatic cancer starts in the tissues of the pancreas that are located in the lower part of the stomach. Cells in the pancreas start to multiply out of control and create problems. This results in cancerous tumour. Pancreatic cancer can impair the two main functions of the pancreas -secreting enzymes that help with digestion and secretion of insulin that aids with the processing of sugar. This condition usually affects people who are over 45 years of age. But, sometimes, it can affect even younger people as well. There are certain symptoms that can contribute to pancreatic cancer. These symptoms are usually non-specific and hence people fail to recognize these symptoms. Awareness of these symptoms can help you save a life and in this article, we have mentioned some of the top symptoms of pancreatic cancer. Continue watching to find out more about the pancreatic cancer symptoms. 1. Lower Back And Abdominal Pain: These are known to be some of the early symptoms of pancreatic cancer. In general, you'll feel a sharp pain in the upper abdomen which will gradually go to the back. 2. Jaundice: It is common for people with pancreatic cancer to suffer from jaundice. Jaundice can cause itchiness on the feet and hands, mainly the soles and palms. 3. Sudden, Unexpected Weight Loss: This is one of the noticeable symptoms of pancreatic cancer. Weight loss occurs when the tumour is spreading to the other organs and impairs their functioning. This lead to improper digestion of nutrients and poor appetite. Sudden weight loss is one of the top symptoms of pancreatic cancer. 4. Nausea And Vomiting: Nausea followed by vomiting is one of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer. When a tumour grows, it can block some parts of the digestive tract and affect the digestion process. This can lead to nausea and vomiting. 5. Change In Urine Colour: For people suffering from pancreatic cancer, the urine colour can turn orange, brown or amber in shade. A developing tumour causes the bile to be blocked and not released from the body. Excess bilirubin in the body can get into the urine and make it darker in appearance. 6. Greasy Or Light Coloured Stool: You will observe that the stools will become large, pale and smelly. This is because of the growing tumour that will prevent the pancreas from producing its digestive enzymes. 7. Bloating: The appearance of tumour can cause gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, gas and inflammation in the abdomen. These symptoms can occur when the pancreas begins to exert pressure on the abdomen and stomach. Bloating is one of the early signs of pancreatic cancer. 8. Lack Of Appetite: People suffering from pancreatic cancer tend to experience a sharp reduction in appetite and they feel full after consuming very little. When the tumour grows, it can exert pressure on the small intestine and hence block the digestive tract, thereby leading to a drop in appetite. Video URL : https://youtu.be/Kv4Qtr2iFyw

6 Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer You should Know

04:56
Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer Here are the top 6 early warning signs of pancreatic cancer that you must know. C If these symptoms tend to worsen after eating and it is becoming difficult for you to eat anything without throwing up, consult your doctor and get best pancreatic cancer treatment. In advanced cases of pancreatic cancer, surgery may be required to bypass the blockage and improve digestion. 4, Unexplained Weight Loss. Unexplained weight loss is another noticeable warning sign of different types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer. Weight loss often occurs when a tumor spreads to nearby organs and impairs their functioning. As the color and consistency of your stool says a lot about your health, any kind of bowel changes should be reported to your doctor. 6, Changes in Urine Color. Along with changes in your stools, you may also notice changes in your urine color, despite drinking enough fluid throughout the day. Your urine may become darker and take on an orange, amber or brown shade. A growing pancreatic tumor can cause bile to get blocked and not released from your body in the way that it should be. Too much bilirubin in the body can get into your urine and make it dark in appearance. At times, there also may be traces of blood in your urine.

What are the symptoms? How do you know if you have pancreatic cancer? Should you be screened? Over the next several minutes, I will give an overview of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The pancreas is the organ that sits in the central upper abdomen, is located right behind the stomach organ. The pancreas is about six to eight inches long and about two inches wide, and it extends from the head of the pancreas, which is on the right side of the abdomen, connected to the small intestine, near the gallbladder and the liver, and the pancreas extends to the tail of the pancreas, which is more on the left side of the abdomen. The pancreas is the organ that's responsible for producing certain hormones such as insulin, which regulates your blood sugar. The pancreas also produces certain digestive enzymes or digestive juices, which help us to digest fat. There are two types of pancreatic cancer. One, which comes from the endocrine glands or the hormone-producing cells such as an insulinoma. The other type of pancreatic cancer comes from the exocrine glands or from the pancreatic ducts, and this exocrine gland pancreatic cancer is the most common type of pancreatic cancer. What are the symptoms of pancreatic cancer? One is weight loss. Patients with pancreatic cancer often have early satiety, meaning they get full quickly off of just small amounts of food, or they may just lose their appetites altogether. Another symptom, abdominal pain. Patients often have a dull, aching abdominal pain in the central upper abdomen, and it often radiates to the back. Another symptom, jaundice. Jaundice occurs when the patient's skin turns yellow or the whites of the eyes turn yellow, and this is due to a blockage of the flow of bile by the pancreatic cancer. Patients who have jaundice, this yellow skin, will often also have a change in their stools. How can you be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer? If you have any of the symptoms I described, it is important that you consult your physician as soon as possible. Your physician will do a complete history and physical, and they will likely do some imaging studies such as an ultrasound of the pancreas or a CT, computed tomography, of the pancreas or a test called an ERCP, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. If they are suspicious or if they see a mass that looks like pancreatic cancer, then they may do a biopsy, which is when they have a physician to take a small sample of the mass, and a pathologist is another type of physician who will look at that and determine if it is or if it isn't pancreatic cancer. The treatment for pancreatic cancer. The treatment really depends on the staging. If the cancer is caught early, there's a chance that you can have surgery or surgical removal of the cancer. and patients often will have an adjuvant therapy, which means they will receive chemotherapy and/or radiation, especially if the pancreatic cancer has spread. In cases of stage four or metastatic pancreatic cancer, a lot of those patients will also receive chemotherapy. However, that chemotherapy is usually just to shrink the tumor or to help to decrease the symptoms of the tumor. Stage four pancreatic cancer is usually not curable. So what are the risk factors for pancreatic cancer? Well, five to 10 percent of patients who have pancreatic cancer also have family members with pancreatic cancer. So, we do believe that there is some hereditary component. Other things that have been associated with pancreatic cancer include cigarette smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, the Helicobacter pylori infection. But quite honestly, we really don't always know the cause of pancreatic cancer. This ends my overview of pancreatic cancer symptoms, signs, and risk factors. I want you to take care of yourselves, and if you have any of the symptoms that I described, please consult your physician immediately. Those symptoms are weight loss, abdominal pain, jaundice. Also, make sure that you prioritize yourself. Take care of you. As always, strive to live your healthiest, happiest life.

10 Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer

02:31
Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the pancreas. This type of cancer is the 4th-leading cause of cancer-related fatalities in the US. Risk factors for pancreatic cancer include - Helicobacter pylori infection, chronic pancreatitis, diabetes, stomach ulcer, and smoking tobacco. Because there are not many noticeable symptoms early on, experts frequently say that pancreatic cancer is a silent disease. However, as cancer grows, signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer may include: #1 Elevated Blood Sugar Levels - some people with pancreatic cancer develop type 2 diabetes as cancer impairs the pancreas' capacity to produce insulin. #2 Nausea - it can happen during later stages, especially if a pancreatic tumor has grown large enough to block a portion of the digestive tract. #3 Bloating - some patients with pancreatic cancer have an uncomfortable swelling in the abdomen or a sense of early fullness with meals. #4 Difficulty Swallowing - if the pancreas is not working correctly due to cancer, it can cause problems with digestion. #5 Pain In The Upper Abdomen - this pain is significant and can be persistent but also intermittent. Also, it can vary between patients. #6 Yellowing Of The Whites Of The Eyes And Skin - jaundice is more common with cancer of the head of the pancreas since the tumor blocks the bile duct. #7 Blood Clots - cancer causes changes in the blood which can increase the likelihood of forming clots. #8 Unexplained Weight Loss - this happens because the pancreas plays an essential role in digesting food and the food is not properly digested, that can lead to weight loss. #9 Poor Appetite. #10 Floating Stools - it occurs due to the fact that the body is not digesting fats well. This video is an informative animated presentation that explains in detail about pancreatic cancer . This is a disease that begins in one of your digestive organs, the pancreas and starts as mutations of pancreatic cells, causing them to grow very quickly and uncontrollably. The mutated cells will often clump together to form tumors which can interfere with the normal pancreas function. Your doctor will recommend treatment based on the type of cell involved, location and stage of your cancer. Treatment may include radiation, surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or a combination of treatments. There are three options to treat ; during a whipple procedure, also called a pancreatoduodenectomy your surgeon will remove the head of your pancreas, your gall bladder and portions of your common bile duct, small intestines and stomach. The remaining structures will be arranged in such a way to allow continued digestion. Watch the video to know more in detail. Manipal Hospitals is a leading healthcare brand in India. Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms - Why you Should get Routine Checkups and Thoughts on Treatment!

09:34
http://utahtexans.com/ Click on the link above for a free guide on choosing and buying dietary supplements for better health. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal forms of cancer someone can get. If you have some stomach pain or diarrhea your probably not going to think it's pancreatic cancer. What is worse is that the symptoms are only really brought after the cancer has spread a lot. Unless you're lucky and you find this disease at a routine checkup in its early stages, the best way to cure it, would be to not get it in the first place. Did you know that smoking tobacco is responsible for 20-30% of pancreatic cancer cases? I used to smoke myself and it's not easy to stop, but just looking at some of the statistics of the harm it causes, can help a person not do this. Just think about these numbers every time you light up. Like I mentioned earlier eating a lot of processed and high sugary foods all can raise the risk as well. The reality is that for thousands of years humans have been eating a certain way. Then very recently we have been changing the way we eat, and obviously our bodies are not used to it and it creates all these problems. According to a study done by the University of East Anglia people whose diet had a large amount of antioxidants were two thirds less likely to get infected with this type of disease, than individuals who rarely consumed antioxidants. This comes as no surprise since antioxidants play a role in defending cells from damage, and a damaged cell is what cancer really is. Besides antioxidants there are a variety of vitamins and nutrients that play a role in the health of cells. If someone is lacking in just one of these nutrients it could bring about all kinds of problems. Sure someone can get there vitamins from food but the truth is that most of the food we do eat doesn't have the vitamins and nutrients like it used to. This is due to many culprits, but the biggest one is soil depletion. Many farmers use chemicals and methods to improve their crops size, growth and resistance to insects, but reduce the vitamins and nutrients in them. Another risk factor of this health problem is having a bad digestive system. Eating healthy definitely helps, but another great idea would be by adding good bacteria. Your digestive system actually has tens of billions of bacteria and they are constantly fighting unhealthy bacteria. If the bad bacteria wins in could bring about all kinds of issues like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Something known as probiotics as well as prebiotics helps the healthy bacteria. The difference between the two is that probiotics are man-made, they are found in yogurt and adds healthy bacteria. Prebiotics is found in certain vegetables and helps grow the good bacteria already in a person's digestive system. So you might be wondering which one is better. Prebiotics are actually a whole lot better because it enables the good bacteria to rapidly grow and expand much more than by adding probiotics. Besides what I have already listed maintaining a healthy weight is huge when preventing health problems like this cancer. Apart from eating a good diet it's very important for someone to exercise daily and if you dislike exercising try listening to a good podcast and going for a walk. According to the Cancer Journal health experts believe that obese individuals are 72 percent more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Another idea that I learned from Dr. OZ a famous TV doctor in the United States would be to take a supplement with curcumin which can help a lot. Before you start to purchase many dietary supplements it's important to realize that these products can sometimes do you more harm than good. The fact is government agencies in many countries don't protect consumers against unhealthy products. Due to this it's easy for companies to make crappy, crummy products that harm people. To protect yourself and your loved ones I highly recommend you view a free report I created on the topic of shopping for dietary supplements. It explains how to distinguish between a good supplement brand and a risky choice. It talks about what dietary supplements someone should take for certain health conditions and much more. The best part is that it's completely free, and you can view this guide by clicking on the link http://utahtexans.com/.

All about Pancreatic Cancer - The helpful video of cancer pancreas: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkvPVlM5D-6sc-Xcidfvg20JirO9vNz3u What is the pancreas? Pancreas locationThe pancreas is an organ about 6 inches long and shaped like a thin pear lying on its side. The wider end of the pancreas is called the head, the middle section is called the body, and the narrow end is called the tail. Where is the pancreas? The pancreas is found deep inside the body, behind the stomach and in front of the spine. It has two main jobs in the body, making: Enzymes – these help to digest (break down) foods. Hormones – such as insulin and glucagon, which control blood sugar levels. In this way, the pancreas helps the body use and store the energy it gets from food. A tube called the pancreatic duct connects the pancreas to the first part of the small intestine, known as the duodenum. Digestive enzymes pass through this tube to help break down food. Another tube, called the common bile duct, passes through the head of the pancreas. This tube carries bile – a substance that helps to digest fats – from the liver and gall bladder to the small intestine. The bile duct may get blocked when a pancreatic tumour invades it. This causes jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin and dark urine). The pancreas contains two types of glands: Exocrine glands – create the enzymes which help digest (break down) foods. Endocrine glands – create the hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which control blood sugars. *If you like this video "about pancreatic cancer", please share it: http://youtu.be/hg34EIJUJ-8 *Subcribe our channel "Cancer Pancreas Symptoms and Treatment" https://www.youtube.com/user/CancerPancreas *Featured video: 3mins understanding CANCER PANCREAS Symptoms & Treatment Pancreatic Cancer useful visual guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qnJMt4q4Yk Using under Creative Common (CC)

Pancreatic Cancer, What You Need to Know

01:49
In the early stages, doctors say pancreatic cancer typically has no symptoms. “The tumor is the same no matter where it is in the pancreas, but the symptoms vary, and because of that the outcomes vary,” said Dr. Mark Bloomston, a surgical oncologist on the medical staff of Lee Health. As the cancer progresses, a patient may start to notice vague symptoms like weight loss or pain in the middle of the abdomen after eating. “When you have a suspicion, a cat scan is really the only test that we can use. It gives me the most information. As a surgeon, I can determine if has spread already and if it’s removable because that is key,” he said. Although the cancer is typically aggressive and diagnosed late, surgeons work to offer patients hope and possibly a cure. “Cures happen. I’ve seen them. We expect them. That’s what we set out to do. That’s why we’ve developed this intense program of high volume pancreatic surgery here in town,” said Dr. Bloomston. Where the tumor is located in the pancreas, will decide how the operation is done. “If it’s on the left side of the pancreas it’s a matter of moving that portion of the pancreas and usually the spleen along with it. If it’s to the right of the pancreas, it’s more complicated. We remove about a third of the pancreas, about a foot of intestine, a small portion of the stomach, the bile duct, the gallbladder, all that gets removed,” said Dr. Bloomston. It’s called the Whipple operation, a lifesaving procedure Dr. Bloomston performed 75 times last year at Lee Health. “These are big operations. I always tell people that they are life changing. People can get back to an absolutely normal life,” he said. A procedure that offers many patients hope and a cure for pancreatic cancer. How to Diagnose Pancreatic Cancer Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive type of cancer with a poor prognosis that spreads quickly and causes a lot of pain in its later stages — the gland's digestive enzymes spill into surrounding tissues and destroy them. However, in the early stages, pancreatic cancer can cause few (if any) symptoms, so it's difficult to diagnose, which is why it's so deadly. Early diagnosis is important because there are more treatment options available. 6 Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms You Should Never Ignore When was the last time you thought about your pancreas? Chances are, you rarely give much thought to this glandular organ, which helps your body digest food and convert it into energy. Located behind your stomach, the pancreas produces insulin and regulates your body's hormones that maintain glucose (blood sugar) levels. Pancreatic cancer is overall pretty rare, with 55,440 people in America expected to be diagnosed in 2018. (The most commonly diagnosed cancer is non-melanoma skin cancer, affecting more than 1 million people a year, followed by lung cancer, with more than 200,000 cases diagnosed annually.) But even though it’s an uncommon diagnosis, pancreatic cancer is soon expected to overtake colon cancer as the number-two leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, says Valerie Lee, MD, pancreatic oncologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Why? First, because pancreatic cancer is very aggressive. “It has a high likelihood of spread, or metastasis, to other organs in the body," says Neil Woody, MD, oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic. The five-year survival rate is only 8.5 percent. But it may also be because pancreatic cancer is on the rise. Pancreatic cancer has been diagnosed at an increase of .5% a year for more than a decade. Part of that is due to increased detection, Dr. Lee says, but lifestyle factors may be playing a role as well. Increases in diabetes and obesity—two major risk factors for pancreatic cancer—may also be contributing to the rise in pancreatic cancer cases. Pancreatic cancer warning signs. Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Only about 10 percent of pancreatic cancers have a genetic predisposition, and good screenings for the general population have been difficult to establish, says Dr. Woody. “Tests with high likelihood of detecting pancreatic cancer, such as endoscopic ultrasound, are invasive, costly, and may carry risks of complications that outweigh their use as screening tests for the average person,” he explains. What’s more, pancreatic cancer is tough to spot early, and many of the symptoms can be caused by other conditions. Plus, people usually have no symptoms until the cancer has spread to other organs. Still, if you are experiencing any of these warning signs, it’s worth making an appointment with your doctor. 1. New onset of diabetes “When people with no risk factors for diabetes (no family history, good diet, thin body type) develop new onset diabetes, or who have a history of well controlled diabetes suddenly find that it becomes difficult to control, it’s reasonable to evaluate why the pancreas may not be functioning as well," says Dr. Lee. 2. Abdominal pain "The pancreas sits close to a bundle of blood vessels and nerves called the celiac plexus that can cause pain and nerve irritation, says Dr. Lee. But the pain is usually pretty encompassing of your abdomen. "Patients feel pain from the epigastrum (the area just under the sternum) through to their back. Imagine a tire hiked up right under your chest and around your abdomen," says Kim Reiss-Binder, MD, an oncologist specializing in pancreatic cancer at the University of Pennsylvania. 3. Unexplained blood clots "Patients with pancreas cancer are particularly prone to blood clots," says Dr. Lee. While the exact cause is not known, it is believed that cancer cells reduce the proteins the body uses to prevent blood clots. “For people who do not have a reason for the development of a clot—a recent major surgery, trauma (like a car accident), hospitalization, or prolonged period where you are laying still, or a hereditary predisposition to clotting—we recommend making sure you are up to date on your cancer screening and to check in with your doctor about any other symptoms that may help to identify the source of the clotting abnormality," says Dr. Lee. 4. Diarrhea and floating stools 5. Jaundice 6. Unexplained weight loss and change in eating patterns. Signs of Pancreatic Cancer You Can't Ignore

03:44
Our Video Topic: Signs of Pancreatic Cancer You Can't Ignore Pancreatic cancer often doesn’t cause any signs or symptoms in the early stages. This can make it hard to diagnose early. As the cancer grows, it may start to cause symptoms. The symptoms and how bad they are can vary for each person. It’s important to remember that symptoms described here can be caused by more common things. They can also be caused by conditions such as pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). What are the symptoms? The information here is about the most common type of pancreatic cancer, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). There are also rarer types of pancreatic cancer called pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (PNETs). They may cause some of the symptoms here, as well as some different symptoms. Read more about the symptoms of PNETs. The symptoms of PDAC can be quite vague and may come and go to begin with. They may depend on where the cancer is in the pancreas, and you may not have all of these symptoms. Common symptoms include: • tummy (abdominal) and back pain • unexplained weight loss • and indigestion. Other symptoms include: • loss of appetite • changes to bowel habits – including steatorrhoea (pale, smelly poo that may float), diarrhoea (loose watery poo) or constipation (problems emptying your bowels) • jaundice (yellow skin and eyes, dark urine and itchy skin) • recently diagnosed diabetes • problems digesting food – such as feeling full quickly when eating, bloating, burping or lots of wind • feeling and being sick (nausea and vomiting) • and difficulty swallowing.
