Anyone who has ever dealt with a mental disorder, either personally or cared for someone suffering with one, knows that treatment of these conditions is incredibly difficult. And when you’re dealing with mental health, one of the worst possible outcomes of treatment is when it makes the condition worse, or causes side effects that are nearly equal to the condition they are designed to treat. And that appears to be the case with a medication called Abilify. Mike Papantonio discusses the dangers of this drug. Learn more about Abilify here: https://www.levinlaw.com/abilify-lawsuit-lawyer

I apologize for the bad quality. By the way, if you are going to comment saying mental illness isn't real or I don't need medication, you are wasting your time. I am seeing a therapist, I have been over 10 years now since I was 8 or 9 (I'm 20 now), and I have tried just about any natural supplement you can possible think of (5-HTP, St. John's Wort, Energy supplements, Tyrosine, SAM-e, and lithium orotate, among many others).

Visit: https://www.thehigginsfirm.com/defective-and-potentially-dangerous-drugs.html Female: An extremely popular drug on the market called Abilify. Now, it’s one of the bestselling drugs on the market. Last year’s sales reached in estimated $6 billion worldwide. It treat a number of psychological problems, including depression, bipolar disorder, and even autism. But, now, there are lawsuits coming out about the dangerous side effects that come with this drug. We got Atty. Jim Higgins from The Higgins Firm joining us to tell us more about the drug and the lawsuits. So, what are these side effects, Jim? Jim Higgins: This one is different, right? Female: OK. Jim Higgins: So, a lot of times when we deal with medical products in our office, it may be, you know, a hip that fails too early or IVC filters we’ve talked about where they call it blood clots. Female: Right. Jim Higgins: This is a psychological component and it - and the claims are that Abilify can cause compulsive behavior. In particular, compulsive gambling, right? Female: Yes, I mean - well, hold on a second, because we were talking about this and I said, “This kind of sounds like maybe somebody went and lost all of their money and now they’re blaming it on the drug. Jim Higgins: Right. Female: But, you said there’s a reason for this like... Jim Higgins: Well, you know, it’s a reason that medical professionals and scientists explained as far as how it works on the brain, the components. But, I will tell you, you know, our office kind of have that same skepticism and still we started looking at these cases. And, I think the case, the original one started was out of Philadelphia. And, what happened is this one person filed a lawsuit, I think, everybody probably rolled their eyes on it, and then more and more people caught - started coming forth. And, again, you know, a family would say, “Well, my husband,” or, “Wife just gone crazy, they need to control themselves.” But, really, the cases that we’re looking at, it’s somebody who never had a problem like this before. They started taking this drug and they truly cannot control themselves and they lose their house, their spouses, their car. I mean, it’s family destroyer and they can’t understand why they can’t control this behavior. Female: And, it’s happening multiple times now. We’re seeing this in different people. It’s not just in isolated case like you said, it’s in multiple places. Jim Higgins: That’s right and that’s when you started saying, “Hey, maybe there’s something more to this.” Female: OK. Oh, my God. It’s so straight. I mean, of all the side effects, you know, you hear the long list at the end... Jim Higgins: Right. Female: ...that one is not mentioned. Jim Higgins: Not mentioned, so it will be interesting. Female: Yes. Jim Higgins: This will start - there’s a few hundred cases going out now. We’re reviewing some cases. You know, that’s the thing that, you know, we don’t file lawsuits just to file them. Female: Right. Jim Higgins: So, I want to make sure that we meet with people. You know, we’re going to look at how long they’ve taken this, what was their behavior like before, what’s their behavior like after, and I always talk to family members and say... Female: Right. Jim Higgins: ...“You tell me, is this different?” You know, what - this is something that you just can’t explain and then through their - when we’re able to show much they’ve lost and then we’ll try to file a lawsuit and get some of that back. Female: Very interesting. Jim Higgins at The Higgins Firm. Everybody, it’s 1800-705-2121. You can also go to higginsfirm.com and thank you to all of the people who are working with you today, because they’re serving at the mission. Jim Higgins: Yes, (skipping their line)[00:02:52], serving at the mission. Female: That was so cool. Jim Higgins: I thought that was very nice. I mean, I’m trying to run out here and help them clean up. Female: You work with good people... Support AutismReach On YouTube - http://www.Patreon.com/AutismReach http://www.AutismReach.org First and foremost, thank you for visiting my YouTube page! My name is Maxwell Lee and I am an Autism Advocate. I have a huge passion for improving the lives of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and have a 30-year-old brother with ASD. I have just graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.) and reside in Asheville, NC. I specialize in understanding the complex world of pharmacotherapy, and hope to use my knowledge to benefit the autism community. My Goal: To travel throughout America giving lectures on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the appropriate treatment options available for this disorder to medical professional schools (Medical schools, Pharmacy schools, Physician-Assistant schools, and Nurse-Practitioner schools). At the moment, many autistic individuals are being put on medications that actually make their autistic qualities worse. This is a huge problem that roots from medical professionals getting a lack of education on Autism Spectrum Disorder and the appropriate way to treat it. The prevalence of autism has skyrocketed! We have gone from 1 in 2,500 children being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the year 1985 (When my older brother with autism was born) to 1 in 45 children being diagnosed now in the year 2016. With the increase in prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder, we have to make sure that healthcare professionals are getting adequate education into Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the appropriate treatment options available for these individuals. Help me by donating to my project, and feel free to contact me at anytime! When I reach $10,000/month, I will transform my job as a pharmacist into becoming a full-time medical educator on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Hi, I am Stuart Talley. I am the partner at Kershaw, Cook & Talley responsible for the pharmaceutical litigation group at our firm. The reason I am doing this video is to provide some information about a new case we are investigating regarding the drug Abilify. Abilify is an antipsychotic medication prescribed to many people throughout the United States for depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression). Recent studies have linked this drug to compulsive gambling and gambling-related behaviors. Abilify activates the pleasure and reward centers in the brain, leading to a lack of impulse control and compulsive behaviors. This is not the first drug in which we have seen a side effect of compulsive gambling. The drug Mirapex had similar problems when it was on the market several years ago. Many people are embarrassed to tell their doctors or loved ones about the compulsive behaviors. So, it is an issue that is not readily noticeable and does not get noticed until there is a pattern. This is the situation with Abilify. Doctors began noticing several of their patients on this medication had problems with gambling. Some doctors published studies about the connection with the drug and gambling. In turn, other doctors read those studies and started looking for those connections in their patients. We have now reached the point where there is evidence that Abilify can cause problems with compulsive gambling. In Europe and Canada, they have added warnings to the labels on the medication. However, they have not added this warning in the United States. A lot of people called us and said they went on this drug. They took it for a while and then suddenly they had irresistible urges they could not control. These urges have had a devastating impact on their lives. We’ve heard stories of people being arrested, people spending 48 hours straight in a casino, and impulse bought extravagant purchases. People losing everything from financial ruin, losing their jobs, and even divorces. These are serious problems with serious consequences. It was as if they changed overnight. The worst part is that people had no idea that this medication had any role in this process. If you have taken Abilify, and had problems with gambling, or any other compulsive behavior, feel free to give us a call, or you can go to our website and fill out our online form.

Does anyone remember Thorazine? It was an antipsychotic given to mentally ill people, often in institutions, that was so sedating, it gave rise to the term "Thorazine shuffle." Ads for Thorazine in medical journals, before drugs were advertised directly to patients, showed Aunt Hattie in a hospital gown, zoned out but causing no trouble to herself or anyone else. No wonder Thorazine and related drugs Haldol, Mellaril and Stelazine were called chemical straitjackets. But Thorazine and similar drugs became close to obsolete in 1993 when a second generation of antipsychotics which included Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Geodon and Abilify came online. It's an common misconception that schizophrenia is always an incurable illness, but this is not true! It is curable in 21% to 75% of cases if done properly! By cured, I mean someone who was previously schizophrenic will get to the point where they will no longer fit the criteria for schizophrenia In this video I provide proof that it is often curable and how to cure it. Sometimes this involves not using antipsychotic medications, (such as Seroquel, Latuda, Abilify, Geodon, Zyprea, etc) and sometimes this involves taking antipsychotics on a temporary basis. I have been taking the drug Abilify, also known as Aripiprazole 30 mg since 2013, but Harvey Kirk did not investigate my claim, because I still have bottles of the drug which I took until 2016, so he is nothing but a lying crook lawyer who didn't even ask me a single question personally, so I will include his name as well if I have to find other counsel for false advertisement.

In the absence of any objective medical tests to determine who has ADD or ADHD, doctors rely in part on standardized assessments and the impressions of teachers and guardians while the they administer leave little room for other causes or aggravating factors, such as diet, or environment. Hence, diagnosing a child or adolescent with ADD or ADHD is often the outcome, although no organic basis for either disease has yet to be clinically proven. Psychiatrists may then prescribe psychotropic drugs for the children without first without making it clear to parents that these medications can have severe side-effects including insomnia, loss of appetite, headaches, psychotic symptoms and even potentially fatal adverse reactions, such as cardiac arrhythmia. And yet, despite these dangers, many school systems actually work with government agencies to force parents to drug their children, threatening those who refuse with the prospect of having their children taken from the home unless they cooperate. As a Martial Arts teacher for over 30 years I have seen the damage caused by pharmaceutical and street drugs on relatives and on a great number of students in Brazil and specially here in the USA where the Big Pharma rules. People are being bullied by these corporations of drug-dealers into submission. Martial Arts will teach a kid to stop any bully in the playground, EDUCATION and INFORMATION will stop these drug peddlers from bulling you and your family. There are many natural alternatives out there to treat anything that is bothering you, just do a research on the subject. This is a Documentary and will provide the facts about psychotropic drugs and the huge profits they create for the pharmaceutical industry. These drugs are not safe and have not been on the market long enough to provide sufficient long term studies regarding their effects. These drugs do cause addiction, however most "doctors" would call this dependence because you do not have to take an increasing dose over time. They are completely fine with you being addicted to the same amount of any given drug on a daily basis. Over half of the people that commit suicide in the United States are prescribed to psychotropic drugs. (Ex: Paxil (Paroxetine), Zoloft (Sertraline), Prozac, Wellbutrin (Bupropion), Effexor, Seroquil, Ultram (Tramadol), etc.) For Optimal Health We Need, 60 Minerals, 16 Vitamins, 12 Amino Acids, 3 Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3 & 6 are essential) Lack of these essential nutrients weakens the body's ability to rebuild itself and increases the potential for 900 Nutritional Deficiency Diseases. (Here's the rest of my story, updated July 27, 2017:) I am what is known as a psychiatric survivor. I've had three breakdowns, each occurring after PROLONGED SLEEP DEPRIVATION. I was forced to take neuroleptics (or so-called "antipsychotics") each time, but have been off of them now for over thirty three years. The problem is that, even though I took these drugs for very short periods of time, they left me with permanent damage. My first breakdown came in 1975, before I had any children. I was on Haldol and Cogentin for about four months, then took myself off these drugs after the psychiatrist refused to do it, telling me I would have to be on them for the rest of my life. After I went off of them I realized that I had lost the feeling in my saddle area that made it possible for me to become sexually aroused. My bottom felt cold and numb. I also didn't understand why I couldn't feel when I had to urinate until there was strong pressure in my abdomen. I wondered if this numbness would be permanent, but was relieved when, after two years, the feelings came back to some degree. (However, they were never to be as strong as they had been.) Well, time went by. I married and had two children, one in the hospital and one at home, both without anesthesia. The feelings I had seemed intact until about a month after my second child was born in 1981. I was a nursing mom, did my own diapers, and worked very hard, often into the night. My baby seemed to have colic, both of my children woke me up over and over at night, and I could not get them to sleep at the same time during the day. So I didn't sleep for about a week. I started to exhibit psychotic symptoms again, was taken to the hospital, forcibly drugged, and labeled a "chronic paranoid schizophrenic". Again I took the Haldol and Cogentin for a couple of weeks, then flushed it down the toilet. Again I lost all my sexual feelings and had to remind myself to urinate. After a couple of years I began to feel just a little. Then a major family crisis came along in 1983 over which I again didn't sleep for about a week. I would have taken a sleeping pill if I could have, but did not have the opportunity until it was too late. By that time I thought I could do anything. I felt like a superwoman. Well, I was only in the hospital for three days, and I immediately flushed the Haldol and Cogentin down the toilet when I got home, but it was too late. I felt as though I had sat on a big piece of ice that I couldn't get off of, and it wouldn't melt. 'Still feels like it never will. I have (literally) sat on this secret for over thirty-three years. At first I thought it must be psychosomatic, something having to do with my anger, and went though extensive therapy. Then, in 1993, I found an M.D. who would actually listen to me, and he put me through some medical testing. When he had finished he told me that I had apparently lost the feeling in my saddle area. In other words, I have a permanent saddle block, or PERMANENT GENITAL ANESTHESIA. I am blessed with a wonderful, understanding, husband, whom I've been married to for almost thirty -nine years. We have two grown children, who are both married, and four wonderful grandchildren. I'm AMAZED, because I was once afraid to marry and have children. As I was working toward my BA in Psych, I was told that mental illness is inherited. Yes, it did seem to run in my family. My great grandmother died after living in an institution for twenty-three years, and my mother was on psychiatric drugs most of her life until she developed symptoms of Tardive Dyskinesia (brain damage) from them several years before she died. I thank God everyday for my family, but I believe that it is important for me to share my story with the public now because so many young people are being given the drugs I was given, and other similar ones. I have heard about people who are on anti-depressants reporting permanent sexual side effects, but I wonder how many have experienced them after being given the major tranquilizers (neuroleptics). The damage that these drugs have done to me has been DEVASTATING. Is it any wonder that there are so many angry, violent, depressed, and suicidal young people when so many of them are being put on drugs they can't "say no" to? Looking for an Abilify medication alternative? https://ktcpartnership.com/ ABILIFY is an atypical antipsychotic indicated for use as an add-on treatment to an antidepressant for adults with Major Depressive Disorder who have had an inadequate response to antidepressant therapy. In the last decade, KETAMINE has also been used to treat patients with treatment resistant depression with a greater than 70% success rate within hours to days (not weeks to months like most oral medications/pills). Most common side effects from ABILIFY include: • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, an inner sense of restlessness or need to move (akathisia), anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness, sleepiness, extrapyramidal disorder (for example, uncontrolled movement disorders or muscle disturbances such as restlessness, tremors and muscle stiffness), fatigue, increased appetite, stuffy nose, and weight gain. Serious side effects from ABILIFY may include: • Antidepressants (including ABILIFY) may increase suicidal thoughts or behaviors in some children, teenagers, and young adults, especially within the first few months of treatment or when the dose is changed. • An increased risk of stroke and ministroke • Tardive dyskinesia, uncontrollable movements of face, tongue, or other parts of body. Tardive Dyskinesia may not go away, even if you stop taking ABILIFY. Tardive Dyskinesia may also start after you stop taking ABILIFY. • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a rare and serious condition that can lead to death. • Seizures (convulsions) have been reported with ABILIFY. • Increases in blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). Extremely high blood sugar can lead to coma or death. • Changes in cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood • Weight gain • Difficulty swallowing which may lead to aspiration or choking • Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure) • Decreases in white blood cells (WBC = infection fighting cells) • ABILIFY and medicines like it can affect your judgment, thinking, or motor skills. You should not drive or operate hazardous machinery until you know how ABILIFY affects you. • Medicines like ABILIFY can impact your body’s ability to reduce body temperature; you should avoid overheating and dehydration. Far and away the most common experience with KETAMINE infusions (at KETAMINE TREATMENT CENTERS) is to have NO SIDE EFFECTS in between treatments. ALL OF THE ABOVE INFORMATION REGARDING ABILIFY IS TAKEN VERBATIM FROM www.Abilify.com KETAMINE is a medicine developed more than 50 years ago for anesthesia during surgery, and has been used for that purpose since that time in children, adults, and animals. More recently, KETAMINE has been found to be a valuable and highly effective treatment for major depression, bipolar depression, postpartum depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and certain pain disorders such as fibromyalgia. KETAMINE TREATMENT CENTERS offers infusions as a simple outpatient procedure. Following a consultation to determine the appropriateness and safety of this treatment, patients are guided each step of the way with the help of a clinical coordinator to ensure a smooth, supportive process. Because the effects of a single infusion are short-lived, patients who show response (70%) will receive a series of infusions over a 2-3 week period. This is an off-label use of KETAMINE, meaning that the FDA has not approved this medication for this use. However, its safety and effectiveness have been demonstrated in multiple research studies, and off-label prescribing is a common and necessary practice in all fields of medicine. KETAMINE TREATMENT CENTERS was founded in 2011 by Dr. Steven P. Levine. Though he is a psychiatrist who places great emphasis on the importance of psychotherapy, medication is often a necessary component of treatment, and he was dissatisfied with the relatively ineffective available options with burdensome side effects. Dr. Levine pioneered a protocol for the clinical use of KETAMINE infusions, has directly supervised many thousands of infusions, and has helped establish similar programs across the country and around the world. Dr. Levine has partnered with Dr. Anand Dugar, a board-certified anesthesiologist, combining the expertise of both psychiatry and anesthesia to provide unrivaled, world-class care for the treatment of major depression, bipolar depression, postpartum depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), fibromyalgia, and pain syndromes. Today, we are proud to have a growing network of KETAMINE TREATMENT CENTERS around the country bringing this important treatment closer to home for millions more. Petition here: http://www.petitiononline.com/TScreen/petition.html St. Petersburg Times Approval process lowers the number of kids on atypical prescriptions. By Kris Hundley Sunday, March 29, 2009 Nudged by public pressure, Florida health officials took a baby step last year toward reining in the use of powerful antipsychotic drugs among children: They began requiring that doctors get approval before giving these drugs to kids under 6 on the Medicaid program. That simple step prompted a seismic change in doctors' prescribing habits. The number of prescriptions of these potent drugs to kids in this age group plummeted nearly 75 percent. Another dramatic change: Nearly 40 percent fewer doctors are even bothering to write prescriptions for these drugs — including Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel and Zyprexa — apparently finding alternatives that require less paperwork. David Cohen, a Florida International University professor who has long questioned the rampant use of the new generation of antipsychotics among kids, applauded the steep decline. He wonders why anyone prescribes these drugs. "Viewing the increase over the past 10 years, I couldn't imagine that many preschoolers needed the most powerful drugs available on the planet,'' he said. "I think the change is great, but is it enough?"

This is a compilation of the various involuntary muscle movements in my neck, face, eyes, arms, legs, hands, feet I've been having for several months. These movements get worse when relaxed, for example at bedtime, but also appear periodically throughout the day. They also vary depending how I am sitting or laying down. MRI results were negative, neurologists and movement disorder specialist seems to think this is stress/anxiety related and was worsened by surgery I had in November 2012, where I had a temporary pin surgically inserted to repair a broken finger. Tried Clonidine and Gabapentin with no success. Took Ambien for 4 months to be able to fall and stay asleep but made me groggy and unable to think clearly. Currently only taking 15mg of Remeron at bedtime to help with sleep and anxiety. Thought it was worth posting in case anyone has experienced something similar or has any suggestions on possible diagnoses or treatments.

No.1★ Zoloft Attorney★|Zoloft Birth Defects Lawyer|Sertraline And Pregnancy Go Here ➽➽ http://zoloftattorneys.net Did you take Zoloft, also known generically as Lustral or Sertraline Hydrochloride during pregnancy? Do you believe that you or your baby were effected as a consequence? It is important to know that you are not alone. There are a large group of mothers and family members who are preparing lawsuits against the Pharmaceutical company Pfizer, the maker of this Anti Depressant. Hundreds Zoloft birth defect lawsuits have been filed, and the numbers keep growing. In June 2012, 38 Plaintiffs filed a lawsuit claiming the SSRI antidepressant Zoloft caused birth defects in their newborns. Their lawsuit alleges that Pfizer, the drug's manufacturer, failed to properly warn consumers and medical professionals about Zoloft's potential harm on developing fetuses. The Plaintiffs further accuse Pfizer of actually marketing Zoloft to pregnant women, ignoring evidence of congenital abnormalities demonstrated in clinical trials. No.1 Zoloft Attorney|Zoloft Birth Defects Lawyer|Sertraline And Pregnancy During the 1990s, concerns emerged that the drug led to increased thoughts of suicide and violent behavior. Pfizer faced lawsuits over increased suicide risks. Use of the prescription drug became an issue in a high-profile murder case involving a South Carolina teen. In 1999, a Zoloft lawsuit gained media attention when a Zoloft user, Brynn Hartman killed her husband, comedian Phil Hartman, and then killed herself. The lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Hartman's estate alleged that Mrs. Hartman's Zoloft use caused her to engage in violent behavior and take her husband's life. The lawsuit alleged Pfizer did not adequately warn Mrs. Hartman of Zoloft's side effects. Pfizer settled the lawsuit with the estate for an undisclosed amount. The initial warning concerning Zoloft and its link to birth defects was issued in 2006 by the FDA. This made potential consumers and the medical community aware of the dangers and elevated risk of high blood pressure in infants of mothers who used Zoloft while pregnant. This warning raised concern about using Zoloft and other antidepressants and these possible pregnancy side effects. At that time, advocacy groups began to urge those with children suffering from Zoloft birth defects to find a Zoloft lawsuit attorney with experience in Zoloft birth defects lawsuits for sound and helpful advice. Concern continued to increase after more studies have been done about the link between SSRI antidepressants like Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro and Prozac and birth defects. It was noted in 2010 in the American Journal of Nursing that it is highly likely that the child of a mother using Zoloft or other antidepressants will suffer from very dangerous and potentially fatal heart defects. There are many other injuries that are associated with the drug. The expansion of the Zoloft lawsuit MDL regarding Zoloft birth defects continues. It was created in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in April 2012. To date, there are approximately 250 Zoloft birth defect lawsuits pending in the MDL, all of which were brought on behalf of children who were born with severe congenital abnormalities after their mothers took Zoloft during pregnancy. Zoloft And Pregnancy|★Zoloft Autism★|Zoloft During Pregnancy Go Here ➽➽ http://zoloftattorneys.net Did you take Zoloft, also known generically as Lustral or Sertraline Hydrochloride during pregnancy? Do you believe that you or your baby were effected as a consequence? It is important to know that you are not alone. There are a large group of mothers and family members who are preparing lawsuits against the Pharmaceutical company Pfizer, the maker of this Anti Depressant. Zoloft And Pregnancy|Zoloft Autism|Zoloft During Pregnancy Hundreds Zoloft birth defect lawsuits have been filed, and the numbers keep growing. During the 1990s, concerns emerged that the drug led to increased thoughts of suicide and violent behavior. At that time, advocacy groups began to urge those with children suffering from Zoloft birth defects to find a Zoloft lawsuit attorney with experience in Zoloft birth defects lawsuits for sound and helpful advice.. JUSTICE SOUND 904 444 9444 Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, comprising the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola, the island containing the nation-states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is the fifth-largest island country in the Caribbean. Once a Spanish possession known as Santiago, in 1655 it came under the rule of England (later Great Britain), and was called Jamaica. It achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962. With 2.8 million people, it is the third most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. Kingston is the country's largest city and its capital, with a population of 937,700. Jamaica has a large diaspora around the world, due to emigration from the country. Jamaica is a Commonwealth realm, with Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch and head of state. Her appointed representative in the country is the Governor-General of Jamaica, currently Patrick Allen. The head of government and Prime Minister of Jamaica is Portia Simpson-Miller. Jamaica is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with legislative power vested in the bicameral Parliament of Jamaica, consisting of an appointed Senate and a directly elected House of RepresentativesThe Arawak and Taino indigenous people, originating in South America, settled on the island between 4000 and 1000 BC. When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1494, there were more than 200 villages ruled by caciques (chiefs of villages). The south coast of Jamaica was the most populated, especially around the area now known as Old Harbour. The Taino still inhabited Jamaica when the English took control of the island in 1655. The Jamaican National Heritage Trust is attempting to locate and document any evidence of the Taino/Arawaks. Spanish rule Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain after landing there in 1494. His probable landing point was Dry Harbour, now called Discovery Bay., although there is some debate that it might have been St. Ann's Bay. St. Ann's Bay was named "Saint Gloria" by Columbus, as the first sighting of the land. One mile west of St. Ann's Bay is the site of the first Spanish settlement on the island, Sevilla, which was established in 1509 and abandoned around 1524 because it was deemed unhealthy. The capital was moved to Spanish Town, then called St. Jago de la Vega, around 1534 (at present-day St. Catherine). British rule Spanish Town has the oldest cathedral of the British colonies in the Caribbean. The Spanish were forcibly evicted by the English at Ocho Rios in St. Ann. In 1655 the English, led by Sir William Penn and General Robert Venables, took over the last Spanish fort in Jamaica. The name of Montego Bay, the capital of the parish of St. James, was derived from the Spanish name manteca bahía (or Bay of Lard), alluding to the lard-making industry based on processing the numerous boars in the area. Henry Morgan was a famous Caribbean pirate and privateer; he had first come to the West Indies as an indentured servant, like most of the early English colonists. In 1660, the population of Jamaica was about 4,500 white and 1,500 black, but by as early as the 1670s, black people formed a majority of the population. In 1394, France prohibited Jews as residents of their country. By 1660, Jamaica had become a refuge for Jews in the New World, also attracting those who had been expelled from Spain and Portugal. A settlement of Jews had arrived in 1510, soon after the son of Christopher Columbus settled on the island. Primarily merchants and traders, the Jewish community was forced to live a clandestine life, calling themselves "Portugals". After the British took over rule of Jamaica, the Jews decided the best defense against Spain's regaining control was to encourage making the colony a base for Caribbean pirates. With the pirates installed in Port Royal, the Spanish would be deterred from attacking. The British leaders agreed with the viability of this strategy to forestall outside aggression. When the English captured Jamaica in 1655, the Spanish colonists fled after freeing their slaves. The slaves dispersed into the mountains, joining the maroons, those who had previously escaped from the Spanish to live with the Taínos. The Jamaican Maroons fought the British during the 18th century. The name is still used today for their modern descendants. During the centuries of slavery, Maroons established free communities in the mountainous interior of Jamaica, where they maintained their freedom and independence for generations.

St. Petersburg Times The 'atypical' dilemma Skyrocketing numbers of kids are prescribed powerful antipsychotic drugs. Is it safe? Nobody knows. By ROBERT FARLEY July 29, 2007 The ever-increasing number of kids who come through the doors of pediatrician Esther Gonzalez's office lead chaotic lives. There's more divorce and more drug use, more domestic violence and physical and sexual abuse. Working parents are overwhelmed. "Some parents are so stressed out, they come in seeking a pill," Gonzalez said. It is easy to medicate kids; "it is very hard to change environment." At her practice in Crystal River, she starts with a thorough screening. A child might need occupational, physical or speech therapy. Sometimes, it takes psychiatric drugs. Despite her concerns about prescribing such medications, Gonzalez has no doubt they have saved many a child from juvenile detention. Not prescribing drugs to a child who needs them, she said, "it's like seeing someone dying and not giving them CPR." Among her patients is 7-year-old Matthew Peck of Brooksville. His 13-year-old brother and 16-year-old sister show scars on their arms and legs where he has bitten them. He flies into rages, kicks, scratches and pulls hair. He destroys furniture and punches holes in the wall. His mom, Cathy Peck, said Matthew's doctors are "leaning toward" a diagnosis of oppositional defiance disorder. And he has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Matthew has taken a 5 mg dose of the atypical Abilify for over two months now. He says "the blue pill" makes him feel like a different person, someone nice. Peck, a single mother on disability from the Army National Guard, says she worries the drugs may become addictive. And diabetes runs in the family, so that's a concern. Then again ... a few months ago Matthew got hold of a steak knife and destroyed a chair. "Am I afraid of what the medications might do to him? Yes," Peck said. "But I am also afraid of what his life would be like without them." Matthew and his brother are playing. Suddenly Matthew raises a hand to hit him. "Gather!" Cathy Peck yells, the trigger word to help Matthew calm himself. He lowers his hand, shambles over to his mother, curls up behind her. Crisis avoided. Matthew's 13-year-old sister, Marradith, said the Abilify works. "He's a different person. He's more fun to be around. He doesn't attack me anymore." The meds help, Mom says, but therapy is integral to Matthew's treatment. She was taking him to eight sessions a week of occupational, speech and language therapy. Matthew recently had his last occupational therapy session - but not by choice. After six years, Sensations Pediatrics Therapy in Brooksville closed shop on June 15. That last day of business, Sensations owner Jeff Leonbruno lamented how hard it is for therapists to stay afloat. Particularly with pediatric therapy sessions, he said, there is a high cancellation and no-show rate, often four or five a day. If they don't show, he can't charge. "It's difficult to make a living at it," Leonbruno said. Insurance companies and Medicaid don't pay enough for therapy, he said. They do, however, pay to reimburse for psychiatric medications. Over the years, he said, Medicaid priorities have shifted toward the elderly in nursing homes. That has put a pinch on services like occupational therapy for children with behavioral disorders. "There's no AARP for kids," he said.
