What Causes Tongue Swelling? Your tongue is a vital and versatile muscle that aids in the digestion of food and helps you speak properly. You may not often think about the health of your tongue, but there are a number of conditions can affect this muscle. Tongue inflammation is one such condition. Tongue inflammation occurs when the tongue becomes swollen and possibly discolored. This can make the tongue appear as if it’s smooth. Other names for tongue inflammation include tongue infection, smooth tongue, glossodynia, glossitis, and burning tongue syndrome. What causes tongue inflammation? Tongue inflammation rarely occurs by itself. It often occurs within the context of other health problems. Allergic reactions Tongue inflammation may occur if you have an allergic reaction to toothpaste, mouthwash, dentures, denture creams, or retainers. Allergic reactions to certain medications may also cause this condition. Sjögren’s syndrome This condition results in the destruction of the saliva glands. When this occurs, you may develop dry mouth, which in turn can lead to tongue inflammation. Injury Burns or trauma inside the mouth may cause tongue inflammation. Vitamin deficiency Pathologically low levels of vitamin B-12 or iron may cause tongue inflammation. Skin conditions Certain skin conditions may cause tongue inflammation. Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory disease causing sores, swelling, and redness. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can present as a body rash. Pemphigus is an autoimmune disease that causes skin blistering. Yeast infections Yeast infections in the mouth, also known as thrush, can cause tongue inflammation. Ingesting irritants Alcohol, spicy foods, or tobacco may irritate the mouth and cause tongue inflammation. What are the symptoms of tongue inflammation? Symptoms of tongue inflammation depend on the severity of your condition and the health condition causing it. You may experience problems with chewing, swallowing, or speaking. You may have a sore, tender, or swollen tongue. Your tongue may change color and appear pale or red. A very serious symptom of tongue inflammation is when you experience severe swelling. This can block your airway. Call 911 immediately if you or someone else is experiencing severe swelling. Some people with this condition won’t feel pain. Their only symptom may be a swollen tongue. How is tongue inflammation diagnosed? Your doctor will examine your tongue to diagnose tongue inflammation. Examination may show that papillae are missing. Papillae are small, fingerlike projections typically found on the tongue. Your doctor may also note swelling of the tongue. Your doctor may ask you about your health history and recent trauma to the mouth or tongue in an effort to determine the underlying cause. They may ask about new toothpastes, new foods, or other triggers that might have caused a sudden onset of inflammation. If there’s no obvious cause for your symptoms, your doctor may perform other tests to determine the cause of your tongue inflammation. Blood tests are commonly used to see if you have a vitamin deficiency or anemia (low iron levels). They can also identify diseases like syphilis. In rare cases where your doctor suspects oral lichen planus, your doctor may take a biopsy, or tissue sample, for laboratory testing. What are the treatment options for tongue inflammation? Treatment of tongue inflammation focuses on two goals. First, it should reduce the inflammation and pain. Second, treatment of tongue inflammation should target the underlying health condition causing this problem. Your doctor may prescribe an anti-inflammatory drug or suggest an over-the-counter remedy like ibuprofen. These medications can help minimize inflammation and reduce pain while your doctor treats the underlying condition. To treat the condition causing tongue inflammation, your doctor may prescribe medications such as antibiotics, antifungals, or antimicrobials. They may also recommend dietary or lifestyle changes such as stopping smoking and avoiding alcohol. Your doctor may also recommend you take supplements such as iron or vitamin B-12. Good oral hygiene may also help reduce symptoms of tongue inflammation. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth every day. Have your teeth examined and cleaned by a dental professional on a regular basis. When should I seek medical care? You may or may not need to call your doctor if you have symptoms of tongue inflammation. Swelling and inflammation of the tongue typically resolve after several days. If symptoms are still present after 10 days, contact your doctor. You should also contact your doctor if you have trouble swallowing, breathing, or speaking.

Most of us don't think about our tongues on a daily basis. They’re one of those important body parts that are normally overlooked: until we eat something really hot. Just like other body parts, the tongue can show signs of sickness or trauma to tell us that something isn't right. Being able to recognize the seven signs associated with your tongue can help you know when something is wrong: If your tongue is cracked A crack in the middle of your tongue can develop with age. If you notice any small cracks in your tongue, they’re probably harmless. They can be passed down genetically. However, if the crack is accompanied by swelling of the face or lips, you should consult a doctor. It might be an indication of a rare disease called Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome. If your tongue is covered in a thick cheese-like lining A thick, white coating on your tongue is a sign of a fungal infection called oral candidiasis. It’s more common among children and teens, but it can also happen to people who wear dentures, who have a weak immune system, or are taking antibiotics. If one of these applies to you, visit you doctor to figure out how to treat it. If you have wounds on your tongue Your tongue can be wounded due to biting it or due to small ulcers. No one really knows why most ulcers appear, but stress and acidic foods can bring them on and make them worse. If the sores don't disappear within two weeks, make an appointment with your doctor. These sores can also be a sign of oral cancer. If your tongue has wavy edges If the edges of your tongue are wavy, that may mean that your tongue is swollen. Swelling makes it press against your teeth more. That normally happens when something else is wrong with your body, like allergies, a thyroid problem, fever, or dehydration. Go see your doctor to find out what may be causing the swelling. If your tongue is pink and a little bumpy Big news: If your tongue is pink and bumpy, you don't have any reason to worry. The small bumps on your tongue are called papillae. They grab your food and make it easier to eat. They’re where your taste buds are. These taste buds control whether you like or dislike certain foods. They’re what make you taste sweet and sour. If your tongue has white splotches White splotches that appear on the side or underneath your tongue may be a sign of leukoplakia, a reaction to a long term irritation on your tongue. Constant irritation makes the cells from the affected area multiply more than usual, creating a white splotch. It may not always be worrisome, but it may be the starting point for cancer to develop later on. Check with your doctor to make sure it's nothing serious. If your tongue is red and you have a fever If your tongue or your child’s tongue turns a deep shade of red and is accompanied by a high fever, contact your doctor immediately. It may be a sign of scarlet fever – throat infections with a rash – or Kawasaki disease, which affects the blood vessels. Kawasaki disease is an autoimmune, non-contagious disease that is found in children under eight years of age. If your child is experiencing these symptoms, take him to a doctor to make sure that he is treated correctly. Cold in summer it is actually very common, but cold basically means that you have nose discharge, sneezing, nose is blocked. Basically it happens in summer situation because of dust and many countries even have a particular spring season but if you have just a normal summer. So what you can do is make sure that you don't take lots of cold items, have balanced diet, even citrus things like lemon, Orange, pineapple which are basically good but over indulgence of any citrus fruit should be avoided. The vitamin C may help prevent cold and over in indulgence of Vitamin C can cause irritation, it is better to avoid anything in cold and sour. In case if you avoid dust, places which are crowded, AC environment which are not filtered properly, if you have your own house you have ac cars and regularly exposed to ac, make sure that the AC filter is clean regularly and maintainance happens very frequently. When you are sitting down make sure that you are not on the direct glass of the AC, also just don't lie down below the fan, if windows are open make sure that it is not very dusty, the place where you live is nit dusty and make sure that your area is generally clean of dust and smoke. https://youtu.be/OfhAaqucsuk to watch ORIGINAL patient education video on UVULITIS A patient complains of a foreign body sensation or fullness in the throat, possibly associated with a muffled voice and gagging. Upon examination of the throat, the uvula is swollen, pale, and somewhat translucent (uvular hydrops). If greatly enlarged, the uvula might rest on the tongue and move in and out with respiration. There might be an associated rash or a history of exposure to phsical stimuli, allergens, or a recurrent seasonal indicence. What to do: Because of the known association of uvular with hypopharyngeal edema, watch for signs of airway compromise. If a patient complains of resiratory difficulty or breathes with stridor, commence treatment with intravenous lines and intubation and cricothyrotomy equipment at the bedside, and a crosstable lateral soft tissue neck x ray to rule out epiglottic swelling. If there is no acute respiraory difficulty, ask about precipitating events. Consider foods, drugs, physical agents, inhalants, insect bites and hereditary angioedema. When fever, sore throat and pharyngeal injection are present, culture the throat with a rapid strep screen and give an antibiotic that covers Haemophilus influenzae (e.g., Biaxin, Augmentin, Bactrim). It is reasonable to obtain a complete blood count with a manual differential to demonstrate eosinophilia to support the possibility of an allergic reaction or a high leukocyte count with increased granulocytes and bands to support a bacterial infection. Initially the patient should receive parenteral H1 and H2 antihistamines like hydroxazine 50-100mg im or diphenhydramine 25-50mg iv along with cimetidine 300mg iv or po or ranitidine 50mg iv or 150mg po. More severe cases should receive repeated doses of epinephrine 0.3ml of 1:1000 sq every 20 minutes x3. Nebulized isomeric or racemic epinephrine or albuterol are also effective. Parenteral corticosteroids like SoluMedrol 125mg iv are also typically used, although efficacy remains umproven. If there is a history of recurrent episodes of edema and there is a family history of the same, consider ordering a C4 complement level or C'1 esterase inhibitor levels as a screening test for hereditary angioedema. In this condition, the edema often involves the uvula and soft palate together. Uvular decompression may be useful in patients that are resistant to medical therapy or whose symptoms progress rapidly. This procedure consists of grasping the uvula with forceps and either making several lacerations with a sterile needle or snippint the distal centimeter as a patial uvulectomy. All patient s should be observed for an adequate period of time to insure that there is either improvement or no further worsening of the swelling before being discharged home. Upon discharge, they should receive 4-5 days of H1 and H2 blockers and steroids if required.

There is no doubt that it is the taste buds on the tongue that make us enjoy all the food that we eat, patients who are having swollen taste buds want to get rid of them as soon as possible because they are not able to enjoy the taste sensation. The best way to treat such a condition is to remove the cause, if the condition is caused because of hot or spicy or salty or acidic food intake first of all we should stop eating such food keep the tongue hydrated and use glycerin or ice for whatever condition maybe sometimes inadequate hygiene leads to oral Thrush, now oral thrush is a fungal infection which should be treated intern it should cause the swollen taste buds. Other causes are the consumption of alcohol, use of tobacco, depression, acidic Reflux which comes which is generally in the common term called acidity, allergic condition and a few more now the cause needs to be addressed accordingly using a mouthwash prevents formation of swollen taste buds. So visit a dentist of your choice and get treated.

Is benadryl the best option for treating allergic reactions? Dr. Dean Mitchell, Board Certified Allergist in NYC, discusses why Benadryl is not the best antihistamine for allergic reactions. For so many years people have thought that they should take Benadryl for allergic reactions. It's common to get Benadryl in the ER when you are having an allergic reaction and when people go to the drugstore they think Benadryl is the best antihistamine. Just because Benadryl is the oldest antihistamine doesn't make it the best one to use when you have an allergic reaction. I rarely recommend using Benadryl for allergic reactions. Today, there are better choices when you have an allergic reaction such as: Claritin This is a non-sedating antihistamine which means it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier so it doesn't make you tired. It also works quickly. In fact, today they have a Claritin ready-tab which you just put on your tongue and it works instantly. You can carry around these tabs in your wallet if you are prone to getting allergic reactions you can't predict. Allegra Allegra may be even stronger than Claritin. It lasts longer and also doesn't affect your blood-brain barrier so you don't get tired. This is one of my favorite antihistamines for patients who get chronic allergies. Zyrtec This is based on an older antihistamine called hydroxyzine which is very powerful. Zyrtec is probably the most powerful of all the antihistamines listed but it can be sedating. People can get tired from it and as a result it's not always tolerated well. It is not always my first choice for allergic reactions. It can also last in your body for several weeks. Best Option - Sublingual Allergy Drops If you are really suffering from chronic allergies frequently and you want to get to the underlying problem and treat it more permanently something like sublingual allergy immunotherapy drops can really make a difference. I suggest that you see your doctor and you ask them if you have been allergy tested if they can arrange for you to get allergy drops so you can have lasting allergy protection. ___________________________________________ Expert: Dr. Dean Mitchell, M.D. Website: http://www.mitchellmedicalgroup.com Location: NYC & Long Island Bio: For over 25 years, Dr. Mitchell has specialized in allergies, candida and immunology in NYC. Keep any swollen lip clean and manage the swelling with cold and warm compresses. If you don't know what caused the swelling, or you suspect an allergic reaction or infection, visit the doctor right away. -Clean the area. While your lip is swollen and sore, it is vulnerable to injury. Sponge it with water gently, several times a day or whenever it gets dirty. Do not pick at it or wipe it. -Apply cold on the day of the injury. Wrap ice in a towel, or use an ice pack from the freezer. Place it gently on your swollen lip. This will reduce swelling for a recent injury. After the first few hours, cold is not typically effective, except to relieve pain. -Switch to warm compresses. After the initial swelling is done, warmth may encourage healing. Heat water until hot, but still cool enough to touch. Dip a towel in the water, then wring out the excess. Hold it to your lips for 10 minutes. Repeat once an hour, several times a day or until swelling reverses. -Take over the counter painkillers. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medications that decrease pain and swelling. The most common over-the-counter variants are acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen. -Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to keep your lips hydrated and avoid further cracking or swelling. -Protect your lips with lip balm or chap stick. These treatments moisturize your lips, preventing further cracking and drying. -Keep the lip uncovered and pressure-free. Pressure can cause more injury and a lot more pain. What Is White Tongue Sore Throat ? Anyone who is potentially subject to streptocco , however children and adolescents who attend school are definitely the most at risk , even and especially for the ease of contagion typical of crowded and enclosed areas such as classrooms. It ' good to specify that not all sore throats are due to streptococcus , most of the episodes , perhaps accompanied by a runny nose , cough , hoarseness , and red eyes , are caused by viruses and should not normally require treatment. Causes The bacteria responsible is the streptococcus Betaemolitico A, that during the infection is concentrated in the nose and throat , then just a sneeze or a cough to expose the contagion who is next . Symptoms No studies were found with reliable data on the incubation period and infectivity / dispersion of streptococcal pharyngitis , it is estimated , however, that the symptoms appear within three days after infection . A child suffering from strep develop in this time some or all of the symptoms indicative of the nature of the infection : red throat , plaques in the throat , difficulty swallowing , swollen neck lymph nodes , tonsils swollen and red , headache ( often in advance of other symptoms ) , pain in the tummy , temperature, feeling of malaise and shivering , loss of appetite and nausea , rash, halitosis, ear pain . They can possibly occur sinusitis , vaginitis and impetigo if the bacterium is able to infect their body structures . Transmission Transmission occurs by transfer of bacteria from one organism to another through the air , typically for a sneeze , a cough , a laugh , ... The greatest danger of infection is when the patient is at the peak of symptoms , however, it can be contagious up to 21 days after onset if not treated . Dangers If not treated , or in case of early abandonment of therapy , one is exposed to the risk of serious consequences : Rheumatic fever ( with possible permanent damage ) , scarlet fever, Dukes' disease , blood infections , impetigo, kidney damage . Duration If treated with antibiotics (usually 10 days ) , spent the first day the fever will be lowered and , after a further 2-3 days the other symptoms will pass . An untreated patient is contagious up to 21 days , although the main symptoms were already solved . Care and Treatment In most cases, the pediatrician or the doctor will prescribe an antibiotic therapy for 10 days , must be followed in the ways and times , dangerous repercussions it. One study addressed the issue of the exclusion ( in association with treatment ) ; even in the absence of symptoms , 37 % of pharyngitis cases have still a positive culture of throat culture, taken in the morning after starting antibiotic therapy . It is therefore to be recommended antibiotic therapy for 24 full hours 24 hours after the first dose fever tend to be resolved and the patient is no longer infectious, in 2 or 3 days also slowly disappear other symptoms. The infection does not leave permanent immunity: it is possible to get sick more than once. Diagnosis The safest method for diagnosing a sore throat is strep through a throat swab, which is the painless removal of liquids through a wand present in the throat to test the presence of the bacterium. Prevention It is useful to keep separate during the infection period kitchenware and other patient like, possible carriers of the bacterium. Similarly you should not share food, plates, napkins, drinks, ... It 'important to cover your mouth and nose during a sneeze to limit the spread of streptococcus A, and it may be worthwhile to change brush teeth past the first few days of antibiotic. scientific review and correction by Dr. Guido Distemper (pharmacist) The information contained in this article shall not in any way replace the doctor-patient relationship; on the contrary it is recommended to seek advice from your doctor before you implement any advice or indication given. http://www.overfitt.com/

FOOD ALLERGY Symptoms, Causes & Treatments OVERVIEW Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. Food allergy affects an estimated 6 to 8 percent of children under age 3 and up to 3 percent of adults. While there's no cure, some children outgrow their food allergy as they get older. It's easy to confuse a food allergy with a much more common reaction known as food intolerance. While bothersome, food intolerance is a less serious condition that does not involve the immune system. SYMPTOMS For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not severe. For other people, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life threatening. Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to two hours after eating the offending food. The most common food allergy signs and symptoms include: • Tingling or itching in the mouth. • Hives, itching or eczema. • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body. • Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing. • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. • Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. Anaphylaxis In some people, a food allergy can trigger a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This can cause life-threatening signs and symptoms, including: • Constriction and tightening of the airways. • A swollen throat or the sensation of a lump in your throat that makes it difficult to breathe. • Shock with a severe drop in blood pressure. • Rapid pulse. • Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness. CAUSES When you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a substance in food as something harmful. In respose, your immune system triggers cells to release an antibody known as immunoglobulin E to neutralize the allergy-causing food or food substance (the allergen). The next time you eat even the smallest amount of that food, immunoglobulin E antibodies sense it and signal your immune system to release a chemical called histamine, as well as other chemicals, into your bloodstream. These chemicals cause allergy symptoms. In adults, the majority of food allergies are triggered by certain proteins in: • Shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and crab. • Peanuts. • Tree nuts, such as walnuts and pecans. • Fish. In children, food allergies are commonly triggered by proteins in: • Peanuts. • Tree nuts. • Eggs. • Cow's milk. • Wheat. • Soy. TREATMENTS The only way to avoid an allergic reaction is to avoid the foods that cause signs and symptoms. However, despite your best efforts, you may come into contact with a food that causes a reaction. For a minor allergic reaction, over-the-counter or prescribed antihistamines may help reduce symptoms. These drugs can be taken after exposure to an allergy-causing food to help relieve itching or hives. However, antihistamines can't treat a severe allergic reaction. For a severe allergic reaction, you may need an emergency injection of epinephrine and a trip to the emergency room. Many people with allergies carry an epinephrine autoinjector. This device is a combined syringe and concealed needle that injects a single dose of medication when pressed against your thigh. If your doctor has prescribed an epinephrine autoinjector: Be sure you know how to use the autoinjector. Also, make sure the people closest to you know how to administer the drug — if they are with you in an anaphylactic emergency, they could save your life. Carry it with you at all times. It may be a good idea to keep an extra autoinjector in your car or in your desk at work. Always be sure to replace epinephrine before its expiration date or it may not work properly.

http://www.healthybalanceddiet.org What is a Food Allergy? Food allergy is an abnormal immune response to a food protein. Food allergies are a different case from experiencing adverse reactions to certain foods. The reason why a person can get allergic to a certain type of food is because of the protein component that it has. Allergic reactions happen when the immune system attacks that protein thinking that it can harm the body. Causes of Food Allergies Food allergies are a result of hypersensitivity of the immune system. When a person ingests a substance that the body is not able to identify, it will release an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) to fight off the foreign body. When IgE is found in the body, cells called mast cells and basophils produce a chemical called histamine. Histamine at high levels can cause inflammation in various parts of the body causing the symptoms of allergy. Signs and Symptoms of a Food Allergy Redness of the skin Inflammation of the skin Itchiness causing skin to thicken after scratching Red bumps or welts on different parts of the body Swollen tongue, hands and feet Puffed eye lids or swelling under the eyes Hives Rashes around the mouth For more info please visit http://www.healthybalanceddiet.org
