Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes Until Dr. Barnard's scientific breakthrough, most health professionals believed that once you developed diabetes, you were stuck with it—and could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems. But as this groundbreaking work reveals, this simply is not true. In a series of studies—the most recent funded by the National Institutes of Health—Dr. Barnard has shown that it is possible to repair insulin function and reverse type 2 diabetes. By following his scientifically proven, life-changing program, diabetics can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the standard diet; and cut back on and in some cases eliminate medications while reducing the risk of diabetes complications. Orignal podcast link: http://www.richroll.com/podcast/neal-barnard-2/ Rich Rolls Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/richroll66 Credit to Rich Roll Podcast for the interview with Dr. Neal Barnard and full credit to the description they created for this interview which is shown below. “Some foods are fattening. Others are addictive. Cheese is both…Loaded with calories, high in sodium, packing more cholesterol than steak, and sprinkled with hormones — if cheese were any worse, it would be Vaseline.” NEAL BARNARD, M.D. Last week we discussed the how behind ditching dairy. This week we discuss the why. Right now the average American eats more than 33 pounds of cheese a year. Packed with calories, loaded with saturated fat and teeming in highly addictive casomorphins, it’s a habit that’s intimately linked to obesity and a litany of chronic illnesses, including heart disease and type-2 diabetes. It’s a habit that wrecks significant havoc on the environment, polluting our skies and poisoning our water table. And it’s a habit that perpetuates unspeakable cruelty on the sentient animals it relies upon to serve its unabating appetite. Nonetheless, the U.S. continues to produce more cheese and dairy products than any other country in the world. Relentless, well-funded dairy industry lobbying efforts have entrenched government subsidies that not only incentivize production but even quietly fund corporate product development and marketing efforts, such as Pizza Hut’s infamous grilled cheese stuffed crust pizza, McDonald’s McCafé products and even Starbucks smoothies — all products specifically produced, developed and marketed to increase consumer dairy consumption courtesy of the federal funded and USDA regulated dairy checkoff program. It’s time to stop the insanity. So let’s talk about it. I can think of no better steward to facilitate a conversation on this subject than my good friend Neal Barnard, M.D. A pre-eminent authority on diet and nutrition and its impact on illnesses such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s, Neal is the founder & president of The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), where he leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research, and the Barnard Medical Center, a ground-breaking non-profit primary care medical practice where board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered dietitians help patients prevent and reverse serious health problems, leveraging a holistic approach that involves tackling the actual causes of illness, with extra attention on nutrition. Neal is also an adjunct associate professor of medicine at George Washington University and has authored over 70 scientific publications as well as 18 books, including the New York Times best-sellers Power Foods for the Brain, 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart, the USA Today best-seller Dr. Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes and the subject of today’s conversation, The Cheese Trap: How Breaking a Surprising Addiction Will Help You Lose Weight, Gain Energy, and Get Healthy. This is a great conversation about all of the aforementioned issues. It’s about how government policy, corporate interests, and regulatory oversight fuel unhealthy consumer food choices. It’s an education on the surprisingly addictive nature of cheese. And it’s a master class on the negative human and planetary health implications of our love affair with dairy and why you need to finally kick the habit. One of my most eye-opening podcasts to date, I urge all of you to listen intently. Take notes if you have to. Listen (or re-listen) to our first conversation (RRP 242). Implement Dr. Barnard’s prodigious wisdom into your daily nutrition regimen. Then take notice as your health begins to flourish, your consciousness expands and your life changes for the better. I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange. Peace + Plants,

This is dr. Neal Barnard's amazing video lecture Breaking the Food Seduction (2003) where he explains the hidden reasons behind our maniacal food cravings and how certain food can be as addictive as any other drug. Why is it so hard to resist the temptation of chocolate? Because chocolate triggers the release of natural opiates in the brain. Cheese also releases mild opiates during digestion - no wonder we crave it. Barnard helps you understand and overcome your food cravings. He explains which foods "hook" us the most and why, and what to do to break free when you want to decrease the calories and fat that accompany these seductive foods. Cheese, for example, is about 70 percent saturated fat and has more cholesterol, ounce for ounce, than a steak. Barnard offers seven steps to breaking your food cravings and presents guidelines for healthy eating using vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Find out what triggers your food cravings and how to finally get rid of them. 1h long. A must see for everyone.

The Physicians Committee's mission is to empower individuals to take control of their own health through nutrition, and we have a ripe audience for that message on Capitol Hill, where thousands of young staffers work long hours and need help finding time for a nutritious diet. http://www.healthyonthehill.org

Subscribe to Dr. Greger’s free nutrition newsletter at https://www.nutritionfacts.org/subscribe and get a free recipe from his new HOW NOT TO DIE COOKBOOK. (All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements go to support the 501c3 nonprofit that runs NutritionFacts.org.) DESCRIPTION: A tablespoon of daily ground flax seeds for a month appears to improve fasting blood sugars, triglycerides, cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1c levels in diabetics. This video reminds me of the Prunes vs. Metamucil for Constipation (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/prunes-vs-metamucil-vs-vegan-diet) one, or any of those talking about various foods that may control blood sugar (Amla Versus Diabetes http://nutritionfacts.org/video/amla-versus-diabetes/), weight (Fat Burning Via Flavonoids http://nutritionfacts.org/video/fat-burning-via-flavonoids/), cholesterol (Dried Apples Versus Cholesterol http://nutritionfacts.org/video/dried-apples-versus-cholesterol/), or sexual dysfunction (Watermelon as Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction http://nutritionfacts.org/video/watermelon-as-treatment-for-erectile-dysfunction/). Yes, these foods may help, but why not get at the root of the problem and try to reverse the condition altogether with a healthier diet overall? That's why I called my 2012 wrap-up Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/uprooting-the-leading-causes-of-death/). The two books I feature are the original classic from 2003, Defeating Diabetes (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/51264427) co-authored by my favorite dietician, Brenda Davis, and then in 2007 and 2012, from two of my medical mentors, Dr. Neal Barnard's Program To Reverse Diabetes Now (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/85485215) and Dr. Joel Fuhrman's The End of Diabetes (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/795757572). In fact Fuhrman's book is so new it wasn't even out when I recorded this video for my volume 12 DVD (http://nutritionfacts.org/2013/01/07/new-nutrition-dvd-to-help-make-your-resolutions-more-resolutee-proceeds-to-charity/)! This is my third flax video of the year. See what it can do against prostate cancer in my last two Flaxseed vs. Prostate Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/flaxseed-vs-prostate-cancer/) and Was It the Flaxseed, Fat Restriction, or Both? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/was-it-the-flaxseed-fat-restriction-or-both). Next, we move on to Flaxseeds For Sensitive Skin (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/flaxseeds-for-sensitive-skin/). Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? Leave it in the comment section at http://nutritionfacts.org/video/flaxseed-vs-diabetes/ and he'll try to answer it! http://www.NutritionFacts.org • Subscribe: http://www.NutritionFacts.org/subscribe • Donate: http://www.NutritionFacts.org/donate • HOW NOT TO DIE: http://nutritionfacts.org/book • Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/NutritionFacts.org • Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/nutrition_facts • Instagram: http://instagram.com/nutrition_facts_org/ • Google+: https://plus.google.com/+NutritionfactsOrgMD • Podcast: http://nutritionfacts.org/audio/
