Yesterday i went for my second rreading & to my horror the GP said she wouldn't let me out of the room without giving me a prescription for statins. Well, F*** That!! Two studies show lecithin's power. Lecithin is a special type of fat called a phospholipid. About 13% by weight of the lecithin molecule is choline. Most choline in the diet is derived from lecithin. Some foods contain it in the free form or as a component of other phospholipids. One tablespoon of lecithin granules provides about 1,725 mg of phosphatidylcholine and 250 mg choline, a little less than the content in an egg. In many of the studies that convinced nutritionists that choline is an important nutrient, lecithin appears to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease several ways: by contributing cholesterol-lowering polyunsaturated fats, inhibiting intestinal absorption of cholesterol, increasing the excretion of cholesterol and bile acids, and favorably affecting lipoprotein profiles. In one study, people with high blood lipids were given 10. 5 grams of lecithin for 30 days. Their average total cholesterol and triglycerides decreased by an impressive one-third, the bad LDLs decreased by 38% and the good HDLs increased by 46%. The researchers concluded that "lecithin. should be administered for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. ".Human studies suggest lecithin and choline may also benefit memory. In one study published in the Journal Organic Systems scientists took a group of pigs and gave them either a diet of GM food or food that with no GMO's in it for 23 weeks. The result was that the pigs that ate a diet of GMO's experienced more severe stomach inflammation and a 25% heavier uterus. There is some good news to soy lecithin and that is that it can provide some benefits. It has an ingredient known as choline. This is one reason why some dietary supplements contain it. It isn't proven, but there is a link with a choline deficiency and memory loss. This does make sense because it has a role in the creation of cell membranes and being used in nerve signals. There is also a link that if someone doesn't have enough choline in their body they have an increased risk of liver damage. To sum everything up soy lecithin is used to make water and oil mix better. It can extend the shelf life of certain products and to reduce sticking. The big danger with it is there could be some negative effects if someone takes too much. They are produced by big pharmaceutical companies, for instance, Centrum is a product of the Pharma giant Wyeth, while Bayer HealthCare of aspirin fame makes the One A Day line. Numerous supplements are also sold by Unilever, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline and other big pharmaceutical firms, and a great part of them are high in artificial additives, synthetic flow agents, chemical colorings, and even imitation vitamin compounds, which cannot be completely processed by the body as it does not recognize them. These are some facts about supplements you need to know: Supplements and pills derived from whole foods treat many, but not all synthetic vitamins deficiencies. Numerous supplements, especially multivitamins, are not derived from edible foods but are a product of synthetically manufactured substances. Synthetic substances are often not absorbed well, and if in high amounts, they have disastrous effects. Long-term epidemiological evidence shows that typical multi-nutritional vitamins do not provide many health benefits. Dangerous Ingredients in Supplements: Yet, one of the most shocking facts about supplements is the one that they include GMOs, and what’s more, in excessive amounts! They are high in genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), toxic additives, aspartame, aluminum, and petroleum-derived artificial colors. All of these destroy the gut bacteria. The following list includes GMO Fillers(unless listed) which must be avoided in the supplements: GMO fed pork/beef gelatin. Soy lecithin. Modified food starch (corn). Corn starch. Whey/egg white protein from GMO-fed cattle/chickens. Hydrogenated soybean oil. Maltodextrin. Citric acid. Lactic acid. Ascorbyl palmitate. Xanthan gum. Natural flavoring. You should also stay away from the following toxins as well: Stearic Acid and Magnesium Stearate. Magnesium stearate is added to at least 90 percent of all vitamin supplements, and it is made by adding a magnesium ion to stearic acid. It has lubricating abilities, which is often the reason why it is added to supplements, and it prevents the sticking of capsules and pills to each other. Immunology published a study which showed that stearic acid could suppress the activity of our natural killer cells, T cells, and thus cause “ a loss of membrane potential and ultimately cell function and viability.” It is in fact sourced from hydrogenated oils like cottonseed oil, and it is often rich in pesticide residue, as it is genetically engineered. Titanium dioxide. This is a common pigment in vitamins and supplements, and the exposure to it can weaken the immune system. “Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen ‘possibly carcinogen[ic] to humans,’” explains the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety on its website. “This evidence showed that high concentrations of pigment-grade (powdered) and ultrafine titanium dioxide dust caused respiratory tract cancer in rats exposed by inhalation and intratracheal instillation.” Carrageenan. A warning issued by the Cornucopia Institute, a highly-effective food activism group, warns that it causes “gastrointestinal inflammation, including higher rates of colon cancer, in laboratory animals.” It also leads to gastrointestinal symptoms (spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome/IBS, chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.), so you must avoid it in order to stay safe. Silicon dioxide. It is in fact just common sand, but it is used as an expensive filler, with the aim to make the bottle weigh more, and thus give the impression that it is of higher quality. Artificial colors. Artificial colors are related to various issues, from cancer to hyperactivity in children. As shown in older studies (AIM-HIGH & HPS2-THRIVE), HDL-C increase alone cannot be associated to cardiovascular benefits, especially when LDL-C is very low. HDL-C remains a marker to assess cardiovascular risk but not a Risk Factor: meaning that raising HDL-C is not proven to provide benefit. A recent data analysis published on August 2017 in the European Heart Journal by Madsen et al. (Eur Heart J 2017;38:2478–2486) referring to the Copenhagen City Heart Study and the Copenhagen General Population Study has shown that the presence of an extremely high concentration of HDL cholesterol is predictive of an increase in all-cause mortality in both men and women. This analysis included 52.268 men and 64.240 women and shows a U-shaped relationship between HDL cholesterol concentration and mortality, with an increased risk observed at both low levels and very high levels of HDL cholesterol. The lowest mortality was observed with HDL cholesterol levels of 73.5mg/dL (1.9 mmol/L) in men and 92.8mg/dL (2.4 mmol/L) in women. Complexity of HDL-C functions does not allow simplifications such as to determine CV Benefit just from HDL-C concentration (eg: mg/dL) modifications. Number and size of HDL-C particles, concentration of Apo-A1, and the actual Reverse Cholesterol Efflux need to be considered. More trials are underway to finally conclude on this matter. LDL-C remains the primary treatment target (recent guidelines also mention non-HDL and Apo-B as secondary targets).
