How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. I'm talking about potentially ditching your multivitamins, if you're not someone that actually needs it. This video came to light simply because a lot of people that have talked to and a lot of people that I've worked with, have had a very, very hard time letting go of their multivitamins. They take these multivitamins and they see them as their crutch. They see them as the end all be all and their link to healthy eating or the void fill from the nutrients that they're missing from their food. But the reality is there's a lot more to just popping a multivitamin and getting your vitamins and minerals in. So first off what I want to look at is the fact that 50% of Americans take a multivitamin. That is a lot, a lot of people that are misled. A lot of people are leading themselves to believe that they're getting all their vitamins and minerals and getting what they need from a simple pill. Also in reality, we have to look at how much money is being spent. We're talking like $11 billion dollars that people are spending on multivitamins. That's a lot of money. Okay, so let's talk about what is happening with a multivitamin and why it may not be the best thing for you. I'm not discounting it. I'm not saying that everyone should avoid taking a multivitamin. There are some subcategories of people that might want to take them, but I want to talk about some reality when it comes down to just popping that pill. First thing I want to look at is too many nutrients, okay? The simple thing is we have to look at this. If our bodies have the ability to take in all these minerals and all of these vitamins at once, don't you think there would be a food out there that truly encompasses all of them? You see, normally we have to eat different subcategories of foods to ultimately make up our nutrients. Now, if it was so easy as just popping a pill, I think that a lot more people would be really, truly healthy and if it was really possible to absorb all those vitamins and minerals at once, I think we'd have some foods that contain all those vitamins and minerals. We have to remember that we require specific enzymatic functions to truly synthesize and utilize different vitamins, minerals, and metals within the body. Each vitamin that we take in each mineral that we take in has a different process to actually being utilized and if we take them all in at once, we're not really allowing the body to do that efficiently. You're much better off knowing what is going to work for you and isolating specific vitamins and specific minerals for your type, for your bio individuality. So the thing we have to look at with multivitamins and we have this constant competition going on. Okay? We have constant competition of different minerals that sometimes need to be elevated and sometimes need to be lower, but we also have way too much of specific minerals. References: 1) Inc., G. With everyone talking about how amazing they can be for you, it's easy to get carried away and not realize the side effects that chia seeds can have. Chia seeds, a superfood that dates back to the times of the Aztecs, are now enjoying a renaissance of classes. They are included in all the nutritional lists as a source rich in fiber, omega-3 fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Of course, chia seeds are a great source of nutrition as part of a balanced diet and are also constantly marketed as an aid to losing weight and swallowed in large quantities by weight watchers, but may have too much good and this superfood It is not an exception. These are some of the side effects of chia seeds that you should keep in mind. Low blood pressure/bleeding Due to the large source of Omega-3 fatty acids in chia seeds, they can actually cause the blood to thin out. It could also cause your blood pressure to drop drastically if you are already facing that health problem. If you already have low blood pressure or if you are already taking prescription blood thinners, be sure to proceed with caution and ask your doctor if your intake of chia seeds is okay. Eating too many chia seeds can cause digestive problems Chia seeds are a good source of fiber, which provides 11 grams of fiber in each 1-ounce serving . Fiber is essential for your health, promoting regularity and supporting beneficial bacteria in your intestine, among other important roles. However, too much fiber can cause problems for some people. Excessive fiber intake can cause problems such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, bloating and gas. This can also occur when a high intake of fiber is combined with inadequate hydration since water is essential to help the fiber pass through the digestive system. In addition, people with inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, may need to control their fiber intake and limit chia seeds during outbreaks. These chronic diseases cause inflammation and narrowing of the gastrointestinal tract, which can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, diarrhea and weight loss. Allergy An allergic reaction to chia seeds is extremely rare, but it is possible. If you are predisposed to allergies, you should be very careful when trying this food. Keep in mind that there are some recorded cases in which these seeds cross-reacted with other foods. Oregano, sesame, mustard, and thyme, in particular, can trigger a reaction. Potential effects on pregnant women Although the way chia seeds affect pregnant women is not fully understood, " most health authorities recommend pregnant and lactating women stay safe and avoid the use of chia seeds. until more research has been done. " While it may be uncertain if chia seeds affect pregnant women, it is probably best to omit the seeds for nine months. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. IBS is a cluster of symptoms, including cramping, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and gas. The exact cause of IBS is not understood, leading to difficulties in treatment. ● It does appear that IBS is more common in more developed countries Likely factors that may lead to IBS include: ● Intestinal microbiota imbalance ● Inflammation ● Intestinal infections ● Serotonin imbalance One common recommendation is the low FODMAP diet, where one avoids foods that contain fermentable carbohydrates ● It is thought that these foods can lead to increased liquid in the intestine and then to diarrhea, as well as bloating and gas ● Restrictive diet where it is nearly impossible to get sufficient vitamins and minerals ● No conclusive research showing this to help Different foods may cause symptoms for different people ● Pay attention to personal triggers ● Keeping a food journal can help If there is no exact science as to what foods to avoid, is there any supporting foods to consume? Turmeric Curcumin, the most active component of turmeric, displays the following health benefits: ● Anti-inflammatory properties ● Anti-bacterial properties ● Spasmolytic activities Case Study A 2004 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that turmeric extract improved IBS symptoms; the study was not placebo controlled 207 volunteers with IBS were given either one or two tablets of turmeric extract daily for 8 weeks and then reported their symptoms. A significant reduction in reported pain and symptoms occurred, however there was no difference between the groups. Roughly ⅔ of participants reported a decrease in their symptoms following treatment. 2. Peppermint Oil Many studies exists showing the potential for improvement of IBS symptoms with peppermint oil Case Study A 2014 study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology reviewed peer reviewed published studies on peppermint oil and IBS symptoms and found peppermint oil more effective than placebo for improvement of both abdominal pain and global IBS symptoms One possible problem with peppermint oil is an increase in heartburn symptoms, although this side effect occurred less frequently than did improvement of IBS symptoms, so still good for most of those who suffer with IBS. Probiotics It is well known that the population of gut bacteria can have an impact on our health People with IBS usually have gut flora that has changed, so foods that encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut is likely to help IBS symptoms Case Study A 2000 study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found an improvement in IBS symptoms Recruited 60 otherwise healthy patients with IBS and split them into a control group and a test group. The test group received Lactobacillus plantarum daily for 4 weeks. The test group experienced improved flatulence during the 4 weeks and better GI function when compared to the control group 12 months after the experiment. Lactobacillus plantarum is the most prevalent bacteria found in sauerkraut, a food made from fermented cabbage. There are 4 that are of particular importance for liver and body health and balance: magnesium, calcium, iron and copper. If you are gassy or constipated, nauseous or have indigestion, here are some home remedies to make an upset stomach feel much better the natural way. Carrot and Mint This mixture is very helpful if you are suffering from the flu. The carrot provides nourishment and the peppermint calms your upset stomach. Slice 4 carrots and mix 4 cups of water, and 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint or one peppermint teabag together. Then boil the mixture. Cook about 15 minutes until the carrots are soft. Remove the tea bag and then blend the mixture until smooth. You can also add a little ground ginger to soothe your stomach even more and a little lemon juice for flavor. Rice Tea To help an upset stomach or to stop diarrhea, make a rice tea. Boil 1/2 cup of rice in about six cups of water for 15 minutes. Take out the rice and add a dash of honey or sugar and drink it warm. Burnt Toast Toast is very good for an upset stomach. However, burnt toast is even better because the burnt parts absorb the toxins that are making you feel sick. You can add a little jelly to make it more tasty. Creatine is one of the few supplements out there that is actually well-backed by research in terms of its effectiveness. However, there’s a lot of confusion out there as to how to take creatine and how creatine works. In terms of “what does creatine do”, it simply allows a faster regeneration of ATP in our muscles. Since ATP is the main form of energy for our muscles, this enables us to perform an extra rep or two during our training. As for the best creatine to take and how to use creatine effectively, stick to creatine monohydrate and take your creatine with your post-workout meal. There seems to be a slight benefit to taking creatine post-workout, and it actually drastically improves its effectiveness by taking creatine with carbohydrates and protein. Now as for whether creatine causes hair loss or other side effects, research is inconclusive at the moment. Long-term creatine supplementation does not cause any adverse health effects but may increase DHT which is a hormone that accelerates male pattern baldness in those who are susceptible or have it in their family history. Can you eat just one meal a day? The human body can survive without a bite of food for up to 3 weeks. Of course, it’s a different story with water; you wouldn’t last more than 3 or 4 days without it!
