This PowerPoint, with activities, and lesson plans are available @: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mr-Raymond-Civics-And-Social-Studies-Academy This lesson teaches students about how U.S. geography has shaped events throughout the history of the United States. This lesson was designed for students taking US History classes. Students will be asked to identify major geographical features including our major rivers, mountain ranges, the Chesapeake Bay, Cape Cod, and Long Island Sound. Students will be exposed to physical maps, political maps, and absolute location. Students will also learn how territorial expansion took place and how land was acquired. Like most of the videos on Mr. Raymond’s Civics and Social Studies Academy’s lessons, this video ends with a review “quiz.” Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans, worksheets, smartboard files and activities, are available at Teachers Pay Teachers. As a social studies teacher, I have often looked for good YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens. In this video we run through the 50 States of America and give a history of the how the 50 US States came to be. We talk about the 13 original colonies, the Louisiana purchase, acquisition of Florida, treaty of Guadalupe hidalgo, the Oregon Treaty and more! To learn more download our 50 States of America Lesson Plan here: https://www.clarendonlearning.org/lesson-plans/50-states-of-america/ The United States did not always have 50 states. A long time ago in the 1700s the country did not yet exist. The land was here, but there were no states until 1787. During that time, the first pieces of land, which are called states today, were called territories or colonies. Colonies were formed in America when people from England came and lived in different places on the East coast. There were 13 original colonies, which were also the first states of America. They are shown on the map to the left. As time passed more and more states joined together and the United States was formed with a total of 50 states. The first state of America was Delaware and the last state to become part of America was Hawaii. It is important to learn the different names of the 50 states of America. When you hear the news, read a book, or do school work, the different names of the states may be said. The more you read about the different states, and see the names of each state, you will start to remember them. Thank you for following Clarendon Learning. We are constantly developing new videos. This PowerPoint, with activities, and lesson plans are available @: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mr-Raymond-Civics-Eoc-Academy This lesson is an in-depth look at the Checks & Balances of the three branches of the United States Federal Government. Students will learn first why a system of checks and balances was put in place, and then they will look at most of the ways (checks) that the three branches stop each other from abusing their powers. Each check is explained and examples are given to reinforce comprehension. Checks and balances play a major role in the tradition of the United States government and students are very often asked to identify the various checks of the three branches on most state Civics and US Government exams. After this lesson, your students will have a firm grasp on these checks. Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans and activities are available at Teachers Pay Teachers. Mr. Raymond’s Civics E.O.C. Academy was designed for students taking the Florida Civics End-of-Course (EOC) Exam. However, as many states are implementing Civics Exams, these videos will work for all students of Civics, US Government, and US History. Currently students have to pass a civics state exam in order to graduate in Idaho, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, North Dakota, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah – as well as state social studies tests such as Texas’ STAAR exam, as well as Virginia’s Civics SOL exam. These videos look at all of the civics benchmarks that will be tested on most state civics exams. As a civics teacher I have often looked for civics YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. While they might be a little basic for AP Government students, they could serve as a refresher of basic concepts and content. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens. I have also been reached by parents whose children are taking Florida Virtual School’s (FLVS) Civics class. During the 1970's when this cartoon was aired for the first time to the American people; the American society was a good society that put America first. We taught our children what it is to be an American. Today that no longer is a priority; unlimited immigration without assimilation and anti-American Communists that refuse to follow the U.S. Constitution are destroying what was once a great Nation. And what do we do? Nothing. We are no longer a Nation, we have become a Country filled with aliens from every third world country from across the globe. I don't believe America will survive as the Nation our founding fathers left us; "One Nation under God indivisible with Liberty and Justice for All" , unless we as a "people" WAKE UP!!! THE WRATH OF THE AWAKENED SAXON by Rudyard Kipling It was not part of their blood, It came to them very late, With long arrears to make good, When the Saxon began to hate. They were not easily moved, They were icy -- willing to wait Till every count should be proved, Ere the Saxon began to hate. Their voices were even and low. Their eyes were level and straight. There was neither sign nor show When the Saxon began to hate. It was not preached to the crowd. It was not taught by the state. No man spoke it aloud When the Saxon began to hate. It was not suddently bred. It will not swiftly abate. Through the chilled years ahead, When Time shall count from the date That the Saxon began to hate.

Smartboard lesson that has kids practice placing the state names into the correct state outline. The kids compete to beat their best score. This is done whole group at first, but as they get more proficient, I split them into 2 groups that compete. They do not compete against the other team, they simply compete to better their own time. If they misplace a word, I announce the name and then they may correct it. At the end of the year, I will offer a Geography Challenge to the kids who want to participate. Then they will have to place all 50 states as quickly as they can. This is a great lesson for special needs students, as well as gifted ones. I have both types of students in my room, and as you see, they are all very good at their states. Enjoy...please visit my website for the file download if you have the Smart notebook software!

As a part of the 50 states study, you may want (or need if your state laws require it) to do a more in depth look into your state's particulars. I reviewed this item many years ago-but found it to be just the ticket for our needs. It is Christian based, so if you are not into that-look for other curriculum that will accomplish the same thing. I suggest hitting local (larger) hotels for those much needed brochures, or your state's welcome centers. You can also contact your state's travel bureau and have them send you some goodies (altho, in our experience, it doesn't provide what you can just collect on your own). ***** PLEASE NOTE***** You will need a TG (good for all grades) and one notebook (state specific) for EACH student grades 3-12. If you are having the littles tag along in the study, they will need a state specific FunBook, which I forgot when I was filming this. The older kids (3-12) will either need to create their own notebook to put the info into (from the state specific notebook) or they will need a notebook from ABeka. Rainbow Resource sells the guide with one state specific notebook. You will need to order additional copies for any extra kids. The Funbook does need to be state specific too. You can no longer order ABeka from them...but I found mine via Christianbook.com or go to Abeka.com to procure those. ABeka: http://www.abeka.com/abekaonline/bookdescription.aspx?sbn=108731 Christian Book: https://www.christianbook.com/state-notebook/pd/208731?event=ESRCG Rainbow Resource: Funbook: scroll the pages to find your state- http://www.rainbowresource.com/searchspring.php?q=funbook Guide plus one student ntbk: scroll pages to find your state- http://www.rainbowresource.com/searchspring.php?q=state+study+from+a+christian+perspective

Students learn about King's biography, including the segregation that he and the African-American community faced, his work as a minister and his role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The video also describes King’s commitment to nonviolent means of protesting and features clips from King’s "I Have a Dream" speech given at the March on Washington.
