Vaginal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the vagina. Vaginal cancer is not common. When found in early stages, it can often be cured. There are two main types of vaginal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Risk factors for vaginal cancer include being aged 60 or older, being exposed to DES while in the mother's womb, human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, and having a history of abnormal cells in the cervix or cervical cancer. Symptoms of vaginal cancer include bleeding or discharge not related to menstrual periods, pain during sexual intercourse, pain in the pelvic area, and a lump in the vagina. To diagnose vaginal cancer, a doctor may do a pelvic exam, pap smear, biopsy, or colposcopy. Treatment for vaginal cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The prognosis depends on the stage of the cancer and whether it has spread, the size of the tumor, the grade of tumor cells, where the cancer is within the vagina, whether there are symptoms, the patient's age and general health, and whether the cancer has just been diagnosed or has recurred. What is vaginal cancer? Vaginal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the vagina. The vagina is the canal leading from the cervix (the opening of uterus) to the outside of the body. At birth, a baby passes out of the body through the vagina (also called the birth canal). Vaginal cancer is not common. When found in early stages, it can often be cured. There are two main types of vaginal cancer: Squamous cell carcinoma: Cancer that forms in squamous cells, the thin, flat cells lining the vagina. Squamous cell vaginal cancer spreads slowly and usually stays near the vagina, but may spread to the lungs and liver. This is the most common type of vaginal cancer. It is found most often in women aged 60 or older. Adenocarcinoma: Cancer that begins in glandular cells. Glandular cells in the lining of the vagina make and release fluids such as mucus. Adenocarcinoma is more likely than squamous cell cancer to spread to the lungs and lymph nodes. It is found most often in women aged 30 or younger.

Dr. McDonald talks about some of the common symptoms of cervical cancer, such as abnormal bleeding. Watch the video to learn more. Matt McDonald, MD: A common question I am asked is what are the warning signs and symptoms of cervical cancer? And when thinking of cervical cancer, it's important to categorize that as precancer or precursor of a cancer called cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. Cervical cancer in and of itself really the most common warning sign or symptom from that really is abnormal bleeding. Most importantly or what you'll read in a textbook is something called postcoital bleeding which is unforeseen or abnormal vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse and that usually happens because the cervical cancerous cells are irritated during intercourse and they are friable and bleed easily when they are touched. So if a woman complains of abnormal bleeding after intercourse, they certainly should seek attention by their physician. Other warning signs that we see with cervical cancer are more indolent and insidious and what I mean by that is they really don't have any symptoms related to the GYN organs. At lot of times when we see patients come in with advanced cervical cancer, which is when we really don't want to catch patients, we have symptoms that really have to do with the kidneys not working or otherwise known as kidney failure that happens sometimes when the cervical cancer becomes so large that it will block the flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder and result in kidney failure and those patients come in with all kinds of symptoms of fatigue, nausea, etc., that really are symptoms related to the kidney failure not necessarily to the cervix. So our goal really is to catch women and find cervical cancer in its early stages. In the early stage symptoms usually have to do with this entity of postcoital bleeding. Alarmingly, though a lot of patients when they develop early cervical cancer like stage 1 and stage 2 have no symptoms not even the abnormal bleeding and so what we really try to do is catch cervical cancer before it exist and that is where we go from a screening standpoint in hopes of preventing cervical cancer and the most effective means of preventing cervical cancer is the Pap smear, and that requires regular visits to the gynecologist or your family practitioner, etc. That's the most effective means of preventing cervical cancer. Without Pap smears, we have no idea where our patent is in the continuum of cervical dysplasia and that's why in certain developing countries where Pap smear surveillance is not a regular part of a woman's life, cervical cancers still the leading cause of cancer related deaths in some women. In countries such as the United States, where cervical cancer screening with Pap smears is a regular event, we have done an enormous job at preventing cervical cancers. So that is the far the best most effective screening mechanisms, regular exams, and Pap smears. Learn more about Dr. McDonald: http://presbyteriangyncancer.org/?id=5013&sid=123

20 early warning signs that cancer is growing in your body 1. Wheezing/shortness of breath Lung cancer patients remember noticing this as one of their first symptoms but didn't initially connect it to cancer. 2. Frequent fevers or infections Frequently a sign of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in bone marrow. It causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells that hinder your body's infection-fighting abilities. 3. Difficulty swallowing Most commonly associated with throat cancer, but can be a good indicator of lung cancer too. 4. Weakness and fatigue Such a common symptom of cancer that it should be looked at in combination with other symptoms to determine which it is. 5. Feeling full and unable to eat This is a sign of ovarian cancer. A loss of appetite even when you haven't eaten for a while is a tip-off. 6. Anorexia Could be an early sign of pancreatic cancer. A sudden disgust for coffee, wine or smoking can be linked to this as well. 7. Rectal bleeding or blood in stool Common sign of colorectal cancer. Blood in the toilet should be a big enough sign to see a doctor immediately. 8. Lumps in the neck, underarm or groin area Swollen lymph nodes indicate changes in the lymphatic system which can lead to cancer. 9. Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn't stop Suggests abnormalities with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a sign of leukemia. Leukemia cells crowd out red blood cells impairing your blood's ability to carry oxygen leading to clots. 10. Bloating or abdominal weight gain Ovarian cancer patients reported unexplained bloating that came on suddenly and continued for a significant amount of time. 11. Unexplained weight loss An early sign of colon and other digestive cancers. Also a sign of cancer that has spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the body's ability to get rid of waste. 12. A red, sore, or swollen breast Indicates inflammatory breast cancer, unexplained changes should be told to a doctor immediately. A nipple that appears flattened, inverted or turned sideways had also been noticed by patients diagnosed with breast cancer. 13. Swelling of facial features Lung cancer patients have reported noticing puffiness, swelling or redness of the face. Small cell lung tumors commonly block blood vessels in the chest preventing blood from flowing freely to the head. 14. Sore/lump on the skin that bleeds, becomes crusty or doesn't heal Different types of skin cancer (melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) can cause these, so be aware of any odd-looking growths or spots. 15. Changes in nails A brown/black dot under the nail can indicate skin cancer. Pale or white nails can be a sign of liver cancer. "Clubbing", which is the enlargement of the fingers with nails that curve down over the tips, can be a sign of lung cancer. 16. Unusually heavy or painful periods, bleeding between periods A common sign of endometrial or uterine cancer. A transvaginal ultrasound should be considered if the problem persists. 17. Chronic cough or chest pain Leukemia and lung tumors (among others), show symptoms that can mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. Some patients also reported a chest pain that extended to the shoulder and down their arm. 18. Pelvic/Abdominal pain Pain and cramping in the pelvis can be linked with the bloating signs of ovarian cancer. Leukemia also does this because it enlarges the spleen. 19. Pain in back or lower right side Often an early sign of liver cancer. Breast cancer can also be found through this as a breast tumor can press backward into the chest or spread to the spine/ribs. 20. Upset stomach Stomach cramps or a frequently upset stomach can be a sign of colorectal cancer. Subscribe ► https://goo.gl/1dVtUS Thank you for watching. It is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, but also one of the most preventable, thanks to early detection with Pap tests. The cervix has 2 major cell types: flat squamous cells lining the outer part, and column-shaped glandular cells covering the inside of the cervical canal. Both types can become cancerous but squamous cell carcinomas are MUCH more common. Cancer usually starts in the zone where the two cell types meet, known as the transformation zone. Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPVs. There are over a hundred different types of HPV, some of which pose HIGHER risks than others. About 70% of all cases are caused by just TWO types: HPV-16 and HPV-18. Two proteins produced by HPV, known as E6 and E7, INTERFERE with cell functions that normally PREVENT EXCESSIVE cell division. This causes the cells to grow in an UNcontrolled manner. HPV is sexually transmitted and is VERY common, but in most women, HPV infections resolve on their own and do NOT cause cancers. Factors that may INcrease the risk of PERSISTENT HPV infections include WEAKENED immune system, other sexually transmitted diseases and smoking. Chances of developing cervical cancer also increase with having many children and LONG-term use of birth control pills. Early-stage cervical cancer generally produces NO symptoms. Advanced-stage disease may cause ABnormal or IRregular vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or unusual vaginal discharge. EARLY detection is the key to prevent cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening may include pap tests ALONE, or in combination with HPV DNA tests. In a pap test, cells are scraped from the cervix and examined for PRE-cancerous changes, known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, or cervical DYSPLASIA. These morphological changes can range from mild to severe. If the results are ABnormal, the test is repeated again after 6 months or a year to MONITOR the condition. Additional diagnostic tests may also be performed. In most cases, MILD dysplasia resolves on its own and a follow-up pap test is all that is required to confirm. In a small number of cases, these ABnormal cells may develop into cancer, but they usually take YEARS to do so, which allows plenty of time for treatment when detected early. In the US, a pap test is recommended every 3 years, from the age of 21, or every 5 years if combined with an HPV test. Treatment options for cervical cancer include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these. Early-stage cervical cancer is typically treated with surgical removal of the uterus. This option is the most effective in preventing cancer from coming back and is usually preferred when patients do NOT need to maintain fertility.

You may have been taught early on to cleanse your private parts daily with strong soap or "feminine hygiene" sprays, but these practices can actually do more harm than good. Here are some cancer symptoms everyone ignores. If many of these signs of cancer occur, you should go and see a doctor. Cancer is a medical condition, which could lead to death when disregarding these symptoms. Subscribe for new videos: http://goo.gl/SaufF4 Voiceover by Rodney Tompkins: https://www.youtube.com/c/BigBadada2012 13: Noticeable skin and mole changes Skin cancer is not only the most common cancer in the US, but its early signs are also tricky to recognize. Skin cancer is nasty and disfigures you terribly, so catching it early on is important for a good prognosis. Melanoma is a malignant skin cancer that develops from our pigment-producing cells, the melanocytes 12: Sores that refuse to heal Cold sores in the mouth are normal, and are usually triggered out of hiding by stress and fever. Usually they aren't a cause for worry, but if you notice a particular sore that's not healing past a three week mark, then go see a doctor. A normal sore would have healed itself 11: Unexpected vaginal bleeding All women should be aware of the regularity of their menstrual cycles so that they could detect any changes that are out of the norm. Any vaginal bleeding outside of the normal cycle is a cause for concern, and could be an early sign of cervical cancer. This also applies to women who have undergone menopause. 10: Weight loss with no apparent reason Easy and unexpected weight loss might sound like a dream for some, but not when it comes with a deadly disease. Adults usually try hard to shed weight, but if your weight obviously goes down without much effort, then it's an indication of a medical problem 9: An unusual lump This should be a no brainer, as anyone with common sense would absolutely think "tumor" upon feeling an unusual lump on their body. But you'd be surprised at the number of people who ignore this symptom 8: Frequent fevers and infections Fever is the body's way of fighting off an infection. While it is a good defense mechanism, frequent and persistent fevers is a sign that the body is consistently being the victim of repeated infections due to a low immune system. Immune deficiency can be caused by any disease that affects the primary disease-fighting agents which are the white blood cells. In the case of leukemia 7: Persistent difficulty in swallowing A sore throat makes swallowing not only difficult, but also painful. If you continuously experience difficulty in swallowing, don't ignore it. Several different cancers can cause this symptom such as neck 6: Unexplained and persistent pain Contrary to what some people think, pain is not a main symptom of cancer. In fact, most cancers start out completely painless. However, any persistent pain should not be ignored as they could still indicate cancer. Brain cancer for example, is the last thing anyone would think of when they get a headache. But intense and persistent ones, especially for those who are not prone 5: Unusual and excessive bruising So you wake up one day with an unusual bruise on your arm, with no idea how it got there. No need to worry, you probably ran into something the previous day and forgot about it. But if bruises start appearing all the time with no apparent reason, and at strange 4: Feeling tired all the time We all have those days when we feel completely exhausted, but a good rest and sleep should be enough to recharge our energy. But if you experience persistent fatigue on a daily basis for over a month or shortness of breath when you didn't before, then be sure 3: Nail changes Did you know that many diseases and illnesses can be seen in the nails alone? There are approximately 30 different nail signs that can be associated with medical conditions including lung cancer, heart diseases, and nutrient deficiencies. Vertical dark lines are common in people with dark skin, but can also indicate a form 2: Changes in bowel habits and bloody stools Everyone has their own regular bowel habits, and goes to the toilet at a certain frequency that they're used to. But when there is a notable change for long periods, either having to go more often, or less, this could be a bad sign. Especially when the nature of the stool has also changed, appearing smaller, larger, or somewhat deformed, this could be a sign of colon cancer. A mass in the intestines could hinder the smooth movements of a stool, or disturb the absorption of water and elements inside the colon, making the resulting stool appear different in size, shape, and color 1: Persistent cough or hoarseness of the voice Everyone gets colds and usually there is absolutely nothing to worry about, even if you feel like coughing up a lung. But when it is accompanied with hoarse sounds, or blood, it's a red flag, and time for you to see a doctor. Especially when no other symptoms that usually accompany colds and allergies like a stuffy nose is present. Although most coughs are benign, a bloody or persistent one that's different than your regular cough must be examined to rule out lung

It’s a risk for women that increase with age. Dr. Samith Sandadi, a gynecologic oncologist on the Lee Health medical staff, says about one in 100,000 women may be diagnosed with vaginal cancer. “What we mainly rely on is symptoms. The most common symptoms that usually effect older women, is vaginal bleeding.” Because vaginal cancer is one of the rarer forms of gynecologic cancers, doctors say unfortunately there’s no screening for it. But in some cases, doctors may be able to detect the cancer before symptoms begin. “If someone has had a history of cervical cancer or if someone has had a hysterectomy and at that time they had abnormal pap smears then yes, we can pick up some of these abnormal cells on a vaginal smear,” said Dr. Sandadi. Doctors say early detection is critical. There are two treatment options for vaginal cancer. If it’s caught early, patients may undergo surgery to remove the cancer. “However, if it’s a little more advanced and it’s a stage two then we probably rely on radiation therapy and chemotherapy,” said Dr. Sandadi. The most common cause for vaginal cancer is the HPV virus. “Recent statistics have shown that 80 percent of women have this virus but most women clear it. But in some women who are immune compromised or they have a persistent HPV virus that’s what usually causes vaginal cancer,” said Dr. Sandadi. Doctors say embarrassment and confusion can cause patients to ignore their symptoms. But it’s important if a woman experiences any irregular bleeding to make an appointment with her physician.
