I was also over stressed and I slowly developed a condition called leaky gut. My gut lining started to erode, making me vulnerable to foreign particles in my bloodstream. Undigested food, bacteria and other foreign invaders entered my bloodstream and were transported all over my body. As a result my immune system was set in motion and set out to destroy the invaders, leading to the massive autoimmune response and chronic inflammation. Through research and a lot of patience, I figured out how to heal my gut lining and get my health back. I now teach this protocol to my patients. My health journey has made me a better practitioner and a more loving husband and father. I’m able to relate to my patient’s experiences, seeing them as more than a set of symptoms. Leaky gut syndrome is a condition that millions of people have, and don’t even know it. From the sound of it, you might think leaky gut syndrome only hurts the digestive system, but it can lead to many other health conditions. Think of the lining of your digestive tract like a net with very small holes in it that only lets some things pass through. Your gut lining works as a wall to keep out the bigger pieces that can harm your system. When someone has leaky gut, the “net” in the digestive tract gets damaged, which causes bigger holes to form in the net, so things that usually can’t pass through are now able to. Some of the things that can now pass through are proteins like gluten, bad bacteria, and undigested food pieces. Toxic waste can also leak from the inside of your intestinal wall into your bloodstream, causing an immune reaction. This leads to swelling throughout your system and causes things like: Bloating Food sensitivities Thyroid conditions Fatigue Joint pain Headaches Skin issues Digestive problems Weight gain Syndrome X If left unfixed, it can lead to worse health problems like inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, depression, anxiety, migraine headaches, muscle pain, and chronic fatigue. Leaky gut syndrome has been linked to other psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. So, in many cases, if you can heal the gut, you can heal the brain. Studies show that the cause of your food allergies, low energy, joint pain, thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, and slow metabolism could be leaky gut symptom spreading through your body. Another problem with leaky gut is that it can stop important minerals and nutrients, like zinc, iron, and vitamin B12, from being taken in. There are four main causes of leaky gut, including: 1. Poor Diet Foods that have a lot of lectins are a bigger problem. Some of the lectins and foods that cause leaky gut are wheat, rice, spelt, and soy. While you are trying to cure leaky gut, stay away from all grains, especially those that contain gluten like wheat. Cow’s milk is another food that can cause leaky gut. The component of dairy that will harm your gut is the protein A1 casein. Also, the pasteurization process will kill important enzymes, making sugars like lactose very hard to digest. Sugar is another thing that can harm your digestive system. Sugar will feed the growth of yeast, candida, and bad bacteria, which will hurt your gut even more. 2. To lessen stress, it’s a good idea to get more sleep, add fun into your week, and practice meditation. 3. Dysbiosis One of the main causes of leaky gut is a condition called dysbiosis, which means uneven levels of good and bad bacteria in your gut. Using too much prescription antibiotic drugs, tap water with chlorine and fluoride, and the lack of probiotic- rich foods adds to the unevenness of good and bad bacteria. Here are 10 common mistakes I find time and again with so many people when it comes to healing a leaky gut. A lot of these errors may seem simple to you, but if you do have leaky gut syndrome and implement the message in this video, watch what happens to your digestive system - and overall health. Greetings, Eric Bakker, naturopath from New Zealand. Thanks for coming back and checking out this video. I got an interesting bunch of questions from a lady on YouTube, a subscriber, a lady called Michelle from Arizona. Michelle’s asking me a few different questions about leaky gut and the kind of things she needs to avoid in order to heal, to expedite healing, to feel better a lot quicker. This one's for you Michelle. I've entitled this video The 10 Leaky Gut Healing Mistakes to Avoid. This is, again, based on a lot of experience and seeing people for a long time, with all kinds of digestive problems, things we're going to talk about now. These are the 10, some of the 10 key things I see as being obstacles to cure, obstacles to get you better. I don't usually like using the cure word, the obstacles that are in your path and hindrances to recovery. What do you think number one is? Number one is something that I talk a lot about, is drinking alcohol. Even drinking occasionally alcohol over a period of three to six months is going to be a big obstacle in your way to recover from leaky gut. Notice how I’ve put it up the top of the list number one, because in my opinion it’s one of the most important ones, the most overlooked. We're talking about even one drink per week or one drink per month. Really this is something that you want to avoid altogether in your quest to get well from any kind of digestive problem. This is not just leaky gut. We’re talking constipation. We're talking diarrhea. We talking parasites. We talking candida. We’re talking the small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. We're talking inflammatory bowel disease. We're talking food allergies. We're talking many different types of problems that are affecting your GI tract. If you want to get well, you just have to stop this. That's all I'm going to say about that matter. It's up to you. Then you'll say to me, “But how long do I have to stop for?” Well, how long is a piece of string? Is it an inch or is it a mile? I mean it comes in all different lengths and shapes and sizes, doesn't it? You need to cut out the alcohol as long as you can, and particularly as we go through the list here you’ll understand how it forms part and parcel with many of the other things that we’re going to bring up. But needless to say we're looking at a period of minimum three to six months if you've got leaky gut. Point number two, another mistake to avoid, not eating the correct way, not eating the correct way. Eating correctly for leaky gut is more than just a bowl of bone broth once a day. It's more than just the kind of foods that you're going to eat. We're going to bring up eating a little bit in this video because there's a lot about eating and leaky gut. By not eating the correct way some people for example are going to rely more in supplements, they're going to take more probiotics to offset the bad effects of certain carbohydrates that they eat. In my book I write about eating on instinct. I like people to eat instinctly, meaning that if a food makes them feel sick or bloated or bad, they avoid that kind of food. Remember, foods are like people in your life. You've got relationships with them. Some people you like and you hang around with. Some people you don't like and you're hanging around less with. Some people are a pain in the ass, you don't like them at all and they aggravate the hell out of you. Are we going to hang around those people or not? You're probably not, you're probably going to be less available. Now try and see foods a little bit like relationships, you've got relationships with them. Some are going to feel good for you. Some are going to feel bad. Some are going to feel terrible. So eat on instinct. Eat with your gut feeling. Remember that.

In this video, I'm looking at diet changes that can help. TITLE - Is There A Diet To Cure Leaky Gut? In previous videos, I looked at what leaky gut syndrome is - and what it's not - as well as the conditions commonly linked to it. Another common question is about how to cure it. Is there a specific diet? The research is really unclear at this stage. Leaky gut proponents claim that restoring your gut barrier will cure your disease or condition. However, this has not yet been proven and is based on an untested theory. In fact, current research suggests it’s not the case. STUDY - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23851019 Human and rodent studies show that intestinal barrier loss is insufficient to initiate disease on its own. Additionally, drugs that help restore barrier function have not been effective for treating conditions, such as celiac disease (1). Therefore, primary forms of treatment targeting the specific autoimmune disease should be followed first. "Although drug targets that may mediate barrier restoration have been proposed, none had been proven effective. As such, current treatments for barrier dysfunction should target the underlying disease." Given the non-specific nature of leaky gut syndrome, there is no one-size-fits-all diet approach. Because a diet that "heals the gut" may not actually cure your specific condition in your unique individual situation. I realize that type of answer is not particularly helpful, so there are some general recommendations you can consider: Although only a small percentage of people are gluten intolerant, chances are you’re one of them if you have an autoimmune disease. Given the link of gluten and gut health (specifically gliadin and its effect on a protein called zonulin), it can be useful to trial a gluten-free diet for one month or more. That means cutting out gluten-containing foods (such as bread and flour), which offer no unique nutrients you can’t get from other foods. Remember that “gluten-free” junk food is still junk food. Vegetables provide the bulk of fiber, vitamins and minerals in our diet, so aim to eat more cruciferous and leafy green vegetables every day. These provide the folate you miss if you are gluten-free (most bread is supplemented with folic acid). Starchy vegetables are also a great choice, as they provide fermentable carbohydrates that feed the healthy bacteria in your gut. So get in the habit of preparing or choosing meals with vegetables at both lunch and dinner. Not only are added sugars a key driver of obesity and metabolic disease, but they also influence the balance of our gut bacteria, which may directly affect the "leakiness" of our gut. These are some general tips to follow, but overall diet changes should be tailored to the individual and their specific condition. There is no one specific diet to treat leaky gut. Leaky gut syndrome is a condition that millions of people have, and don’t even know it. From the sound of it, you might think leaky gut syndrome only hurts the digestive system, but it can lead to many other health conditions. Some of the things that can now pass through are proteins like gluten, bad bacteria, and undigested food pieces. Toxic waste can also leak from the inside of your intestinal wall into your bloodstream, causing an immune reaction. This leads to swelling throughout your system and causes things like. Bloating. Food sensitivities. Thyroid conditions. Fatigue. Joint pain. Headaches. Skin issues. Digestive problems. Weight gain. Syndrome X.
