Diuretics are sometimes called ‘water tablets’ and are designed to increase the amount of water and salt expelled from the body as urine (termed diuresis) They help get rid of excess fluid by removing sodium and chloride from the body in the urine - the sodium and chloride in turn draw excess water from the body. Too much salt can cause extra fluid to build up in your blood vessels, raising your blood pressure. There are different types of prescribed diuretics acting on different levels of a nephron (the smallest unit of kidney) The basic mechanism seen in most of them is that they act on pumps of a nephron, which means that they decrease the absorption of sodium from urine, and thus more water remains in the urine. (1) Use of Diuretics: Doctors prescribe diuretics when the body is retaining too much fluid. The following conditions may require the regulation of fluid in the body or result in fluid retention: High blood pressure, congestive heart failure, kidney dysfunction, edema (tissue swelling, such as in swollen legs and feet) Diuretics lower your blood pressure by flushing salt out of your body, which causes the walls of your blood vessel to relax and widen - easier for your blood to flow through. Congestive heart failure keeps your heart from pumping blood effectively throughout your body: this leads to a buildup of fluids in your body, which is called edema. Diuretics help reduce this fluid buildup. Prescription diuretics may cause some side effects. These include fatigue, muscle cramps, lightheadedness, rash, and headaches. (1,2,3) Natural Diuretics: Some herbs and dietary supplements have diuretic properties that may be helpful to you and won’t provide any negative side effects. Asparagus: It contains high levels of the amino acid asparagine, which serves as a natural diuretic, and increased urination not only releases fluid but helps rid the body of excess salts. For the entire population, 17 subjects, there was a significant increase (5%) in the frequency of urination in just 5 hours after the first dose. Fluid retention in women is naturally associated with pregnancy and for some women, also with their monthly cycle. Lack of physical activity for long periods of time, when lying down from an injury or on long flights, for example, can also cause temporary water retention. Edema can also indicate, however, more serious medical conditions if you do not have a history of fluid retention and you suddenly notice the symptoms. Some of these conditions include: Reactions to Medication Kidney disease Liver cirrhosis Drop Lymphedema In many cases however, fluid retention is a fairly common and relatively harmless, though certainly uncomfortable condition. You can take some simple steps to avoid or reduce your water retention and alleviate the discomfort it causes. Reduce salt intake Most processed foods are loaded with salt, a primary factor in water retention. Sodium in salt binds with water and influences the flow of water throughout the body. While salt is important for the proper functioning of the body, the evidence shows that it will help us retain water. Look at nutritional labels and eat a low-sodium diet so you can flush the water through your body more quickly, but keep in mind the body's need for salt in warm climates. Take your vitamins Some tests have shown that vitamin B6, calcium and magnesium and vitamin E can reduce the water retention associated with the menstrual cycle. Make sure you do not exceed recommended amounts of vitamin E as this can bring on its own negative effects, but look for foods such as nuts, bananas, potatoes and even meat to boost vitamin B6 levels. For calcium, dark leafy greens such as spinach are an excellent choice. Eat foods with potassium Potassium is an essential electrolyte for proper functioning of the body and deficiencies often lead to muscle cramps and fatigue. Potassium also helps prevent water retention by lowering sodium levels and acting as a diuretic. Add tomatoes, avocados and bananas to your diet to boost your potassium levels, but do not be afraid of the lean chicken breast either, as it also contains high levels of potassium. A glass of tomato juice provides a potent dose of potassium for those in dire need. Avoid simple carbohydrates Increased insulin levels, which cause simple carbohydrates, lead to increased retention of sodium in the kidneys and, by extension, increases water retention. White flour, sugar, white rice, pasta and other foods high in the glycemic index may play a role in increasing water retention by these insulin points, so reduce your carbs or stick to the more complex carbohydrates To help bring down the fluid retention. Cooking with garlic Garlic is a natural diuretic and is a great way to quickly reduce water retention by adding something to your kitchen. Some people take garlic raw, but must take into account the potency of garlic, not only for its social consequences, but also for its ability to affect the digestive system. Be prepared to make some trips to the bathroom after taking your garlic. Exercise It may be the ultimate advice that those who suffer from bloating want to hear, but it works. What Causes Water Retention and How to Avoid It Swellings in the hands, feet, and legs are a result of water retention, or otherwise known as edema. Edema is manifested by the buildup of fluids in the tissues, circulatory system, and cavities. The most common reasons for water retention include premenstrual syndrome, physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyle, pregnancy, and use of certain medications. Swellings often occur during a long flight as well. Edema is most often not serious, but at times, it can indicate a kidney disease or heart failure. Due to this, you should always find a way to treat edema. These are the main reasons for water retention and ways to treat it: Excessive Consumption of Processed Foods Processed foods are loaded with sugar and sodium, which is one of the main causes of edema. They are also rich artificial food additives which have toxic nature, and thus put a load on the kidneys and the liver. Foods high in sugar lead to insulin spikes and high blood sugar. Excessive Sodium Intake In case you consume foods rich in sodium and do not drink enough water, the body will start using the reserves, leading to edema. With the help of water, the human cells can expand up to 20 times. Sodium is also added to processed meat, canned vegetables, condiments, etc. You should avoid table salt and start using Celtic and Himalayan sea salt. Dehydration Dehydration occurs when a person does not drink sufficient amounts of water. In this case, the body retains water to survive, and this causes swellings in the body. Remember to avoid coffee and soda drinks, and drink more water. Vitamin B6 deficiency The lack of vitamin B6 in the body often causes water retention. The Journal of Caring Sciences published a study which involved women who experienced water retention due to premenstrual syndrome. The intake of vitamin B6 daily improved their condition. Since it is water-soluble, it is best to consume it in the form of whole foods. Foods rich in it include tuna, sunflower seeds, pistachio nuts, potatoes with skin, dried fruits, chicken, lean beef, turkey, and bananas. Magnesium Deficiency Edema is often caused by the lack of magnesium in the body, which is an essential mineral for numerous bodily functions. Researchers have found that the daily dose of 200 milligrams can reduce water retention in women with premenstrual symptoms. Therefore, make sure you consume more magnesium- rich foods, like nuts, whole grains, dried fruits, peas, spinach, dark green veggies, dark chocolate, and avocados. Potassium deficiency Potassium is vital for the proper function of cells, tissues, and organs in the body, and it regulates the water balance. Dandelion Root: Dandelion is the name of Taraxacum, a large family of flowering plants found everywhere in the world. Dandelion acts as a natural diuretic, which is any substance that promotes diuresis, that is, the increased production of urine. Dandelion causes kidneys to increase the volume of urine and expel the extra salt accumulated inside the body. By stimulating more urine production, dandelion affects the blood volume and water balance in your body, causing excess fluid to move out of the body tissues. Additionally, dandelion contains taraxasterol. The diuretic effect of dandelion is believed to be due to taraxasterol. This plant sterol removes fluids from spaces between tissues and the skin. Taraxasterol is also anti-allergic, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory. (1,2,3) Magnesium: Magnesium is important in the body because of its affinity for phosphates in biological systems. For this reason, it is needed for any biochemical reaction involving ATP (Adenosine triphosphate), the chief energy molecule in the cell. Magnesium is also required for synthesizing DNA and RNA. Water retention is a big deal with PCOS and hormone imbalance. It can make us feel fat, bloated, thick and unhealthy. Maybe you’ve gained 5 pounds in one day, your waist is much less defined, your rings no longer fit, and your shoes feel tighter. If you’re struggling with fluid retention you should know you’re not alone. Hi, I'm Robin Nielsen, the Chief Wellness Officer here at Insulite Health. I’m so glad you’re here. We’ve found that water retention, also known as edema or fluid retention is a very hot topic for women with PCOS and hormone imbalance, so we want you to understand what is happening and show you how you have all the power to reduce fluid retention in your body. And it can happen at any age. I can tell when I’m retaining water. Rings that were loose I can’t even put on my fingers. My face looks a little puffier and my shoes are tight. That’s because the extremities are the first to retain fluids due to less circulation in those areas…. When I was younger this happened for me all the time, and it’s a main reason I gained weight so easily. But as I learned why this happens and how to avoid it, I rarely retain water any more. You might have “cankels” – swollen ankles - where it’s hard to see the bones in your ankles. My mother and great grandmother had this symptom – and it’s so important to address because it’s a serious indication that something’s not right. Some other symptoms of fluid retention are: aching in the affected areas, feeling stiff in the joints, rapid weight gain over days or weeks, unexplained weight fluctuations, when you press the skin it may hold an indent for a few seconds. Fluid retention, bloating, and water retention are three terms for the same condition – excess fluids accumulating in your body’s cavities. Women with PCOS often report this troubling symptom and as we age it can become more and more of a problem. Imbalanced hormones, especially estrogen, might be affecting your body’s normalizing mechanisms, or it could be a side effect of birth control pills, which is one of the more common PCOS drugs. There can be many causes of fluid retention: insulin resistance, hot weather, standing for long periods of time, hormone fluctuations – particularly estrogen, the birth control pill, nutrient deficiencies, elevate cortisol (stress), chronic venous insufficiency where the weakened valves in the veins of the legs fail to efficiently return blood to the heart and certain medications. Insulin tells your kidneys to hang on to sodium and water which in turn causes fluid retention. Simmer for 15 minutes, strain and allow to cool before drinking. Try drinking nettle tea made from common stinging nettles, since nettle is a natural diuretic. To make the tea, place a heaped teaspoon of powdered root in a cup of cold water. Boil for 1 minute, then remove from the heat and steep for 10 minutes. Drink 1 cup 4 times a day. Corn silk is mildly diuretic, possibly because of its high potassium content. Put a teaspoon of dried corn silk (available from some health food shops and online) in cold water. You can increase your intake of vitamin B6 throughout the month by eating more spinach, fish, poultry, chickpeas, avocados and bananas. (Caution: Don't take any of the B vitamins in isolation–take a B complex. And if you have tingling in your fingers or toes, stop taking B6 immediately.) Get more magnesium.
