Cedars-Sinai researchers have discovered that the vitamin has the potential to provide a powerful weapon to fight superbugs and antibiotic-resistant staph infections that health experts see as a threat to public health. B3 is one of 8 B vitamins. It is also known as niacin (nicotinic acid) and has 2 other forms, niacinamide (nicotinamide) and inositol hexanicotinate, which have different effects from niacin. Foods high in Nicotinamide (or Vitamin B3) include Brewer's Yeast, Sunflower Seeds, Raw Peanuts and Beets. Interestingly Beet Juice & Yeast have been shown to have remarkable cancer killing attributes. Possibly due to the sugars in the beets causing a beneficial form of fermentation to occur with the B vitamins in the Brewer's Yeast. The research, published in the September 2012 edition of The Journal of Clinical Investigation, found that high doses of the nicotinamide form of vitamin B3 stimulated a specific gene (CEBPE), enhancing white blood cells’ ability to combat staph infections, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA. “It’s critical that we find novel antimicrobial approaches to treat infection and not rely so heavily on antibiotics,” said George Liu, MD, PhD, a pediatric infectious disease physician at Cedars-Sinai’s Maxine Dunitz Children’s Health Center and co-senior author of the study. “That’s why this discovery is so exciting. Our research indicates this common vitamin is potentially effective in fighting off and protecting against one of today’s most concerning public health threats.” Most staph infections today are caused by antibiotic resistant Staph aureus. The infections can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening illness. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics by doctors has only led to a rapid rise and threatening spread of these resistant germs. In laboratory tests with mice and human blood, Cedars-Sinai scientists found that vitamin B3 increased by up to 1,000 fold the ability of the immune system to kill staph bacteria. A feat impossible via standard antibiotics. Beyond its findings related to vitamin B3, the study indicates that similar targeting of the CEBPE gene with other compounds may offer a new immune-boosting strategy to fight bacterial infections. Kyme and Thoennissen turned to vitamin B3, which has been shown to increase the expression of some other genes in the CEBP family. The results: When studied in human blood, clinical doses of the vitamin appeared to virtually wipe out the staph infection in only a few hours. “There’s more research to be done, but we believe that vitamin B3, and other compounds that are able to increase the activity of this particular gene, have the potential to be effective against other antibiotic-resistant bacteria in addition to strains of staph,” he said. All the B vitamins are water-soluble, meaning that the body does not store them. The body can meet all of its needs for B3 through diet. However, very high doses of B3 are mostly available by prescription, and have already been proven to prevent high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, alzheimer's disease and cataracts. Ironically, patients who are prescribed many antibiotics, are also advised to to avoid vitamin B3 because it interferes with the absorption of the medication. Let me explain what an electrolyte is, if you ever take salt and put it in the water and dissolve it, the sodium and chloride disconnect and they become two separate minerals and that fluid is very electrically conductive. Basically electrolytes have to do with minerals that help conduct electricity in the body. They help with a lot of different things. As far as the electrolytes, it will be like potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, chlorides, and all those minerals. Potassium out of all the electrolytes is the one that we need in a very large quantities. Why is that? Why do we need potassium in a large amount? I am talking 4,700 mg to 6,000 mg every single day and that is equivalent to 7 to 10+ cups of salad or vegetables every single day. Let’s go dig further into exactly to why we need potassium. There are something in the body called sodium-potassium pump. It is built in a little protein connected to an enzyme, it forms a whole enzyme in the surface of your cells and you will have between 8,000 to 30million of this little tiny pumps and they are little generators that generate electricity to allow things to go through the cell so it take a lot of energy, in fact the energy of 1/3 of your diet goes to running those pumps. You also have another pump in the stomach called the hydrogen potassium ATPas, it is basically another pump that is built with a potassium that allows you to create stomach acid to help you digest. This pumps are also in the muscles, nervous systems and the pumps in the nervous system used about 60% of your body’s chloric intake of energy. In other words, these pumps are really critically important in exchanging nutrition, glucose, amino acids and other minerals to allow them to transport in other cell. Potassium is essential for building the pumps to allow these functions right here, they charge the cell electrically, so your cells have a certain voltage to allow things to work and go in and out of the cell to create different energy. But there is an interesting associated factor, i.e. the build up of calcium in the arteries of the brain. Also, if the arteries get packed with calcium packing, the arteries get hard and it might be one of the causes for high blood pressure. Stroke is a situation of blocking of vascular blood flow to the brain. Dosages to try: Healthy normal person: Vitamin D3 (10,000 IUs) + Vitamin K2 (MK-7) (100mcg) per day Unhealthy person: Vitamin D3 (30,000 IUs) + Vitamin K2 (MK-7) (300mcg) per day Vitamin D and K2 work together and help to mobilize calcium. You may want to consume both vitamins, in the morning with butter or coconut oil for better absorption (due to being fat soluble). Vitamin D3 is about absorption of calcium and vitamin K2 is about directing where calcium goes - both working together to keep your arteries and soft tissues clean and your bones strong. Unless you have osteoporosis, I would not recommend taking extra calcium. Instead consume some cheese on a daily basis. Most of the calcium in the body is recycled so adding more, is not needed. Never consume calcium carbonate (limestone) as your calcium. If you take calcium and vitamin D without K2, you may be in danger of excess calcium build up - calcification of your vessels. Yet K2 is a powerful inhibitor of calcification of soft tissues.
