Warning Speak to a physician before starting to take a vitamin of any kind. Step 1: Select form Narrow down your choices based on how you would like to ingest your vitamin: in powder form, capsule, tablet, or liquid. Step 2: Choose dosage Further narrow down your selection by deciding how often you would like to take a vitamin: a single daily dose or spread out throughout the day. Step 3: Check essential vitamins Make sure it provides at least 100 percent of the eight essential vitamins: thiamine or B-1, riboflavin or B-2, niacin or B-3, B-6, B-12, D, E, and folic acid. Step 4: Confirm vitamin A & C Check that it contains some vitamin A and vitamin C. Tip Too much vitamin A has been found to increase hip fracture when over 4300 incremental units are taken daily; and too much vitamin C may cause an upset stomach and/or diarrhea. Step 5: Check mineral level Check mineral levels. It should provides at least 50% of your daily chromium, copper, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. Tip Magnesium can be obtained from whole-grains and may not require supplementation. Step 6: Separate calcium Don't worry about getting calcium in your multivitamin -- it's better taken separately, as the daily recommended levels are too large to be contained a single pill. Step 7: Avoid too much phosphorus Avoid multivitamins with too much phosphorus, which we get plenty of in our diets. Step 8: Consider iron If you're a woman, vegetarian, or have been diagnosed as anemic, select a multivitamin that contains iron in ferrous form, which is most readily absorbed. Tip If your multivitamin contains iron, take it with a piece of fruit. Not only can it cause intestinal discomfort on an empty stomach, but the fruit's vitamin C will help it absorb. Step 9: Compare prices Compare prices and remember that you're shopping for a daily multivitamin, which can add up. Tip Cheaper multivitamins may contain fillers such as starches and silica, while expensive multivitamins tend to be more pure. Step 10: Confirm quality Only purchase quality-guaranteed or laboratory-tested multivitamins. Step 11: Take regularly Now that you've chosen your multivitamin, make sure you take it regularly. In the morning! • As multivitamins contain both water and fat soluble vitamins, be sure to include some healthy fats with your meal for optimal absorption. -B-Complex vitamins - Taking B vitamins with breakfast helps to boost your metabolism and convert your food into energy, which can be used throughout the day. -Vitamin C- Vitamin C is best taken in the morning to support the immune system and boost energy levels. • Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin that lasts only a few hours in the blood stream, so if your formula recommends more than 1 tablet per day, take it in divided doses with meals to get the full benefit. Noon: -CoQ10 - CoQ10 is best taken at lunch time with a meal that contains dietary fats. • Avoid taking CoQ10 late in the day so it doesn't disturb your sleep. -Vitamin D - Vitamin D is best taken with a meal that contains dietary fats. • It's possible that Vitamin D can negatively affect sleep, so lunch time is a good time to get your Vitamin D. -Iodine - Iodine is not stored in the body, so regular intake is needed. kelp tablets taken with lunch may boost midday energy levels. -Vitamin K - Vitamin K is best absorbed along with dietary fats and ideally should be taken during the middle of the day. • Avoid taking vitamin K if you are taking Coumadin or any anticoagulant prescription drug, as Vitamin K can interfere with the effects of the medication. Night: - Fish oil - Important to support many aspects of health, fish oil is best taken with a main meal like dinner to aid absorption. -Calcium - Calcium aids nerve transmission and muscle function. To get the full benefit, take calcium in the evening along with magnesium. -Magnesium - Magnesium has a calming effect on the muscles and nervous system and may aid restful sleep. • Magnesium works synergistically with calcium, so take these together either as individual supplements or in a combined formula. In addition: -Digestive Enzymes - Digestive enzymes can be taken with any meal or within 30 minutes of your meal. Unless you have serious digestive issues, they don't necessarily need to be taken with light meals or snacks, but can be very beneficial for optimal breakdown and absorption of nutrients when taken with main meals. -Fiber - Fiber supplements may be taken either first thing in the morning or before bed. Be sure to take fiber with a full glass of water and get plenty of water during the day. I think you have to start by breaking down the nutritional supplements into categories. In this video, I categorize multivitamins, specialty vitamins, protein powders, pre workouts, creatine, BCAA’s, creatine, omega-3’s and joint recovery formulas. Each group is discussed in relation to one of four age brackets regarding their appropriateness. All of the supplements discussed are ones that I take myself and would recommend to others. You will not see any testosterone boosters or pro hormones because I don’t believe in them or recommend them to my viewers. Even the pre workout supplements must undergo severe scrutiny based on the dangers that have been shown to riddle that product category for the past couple of years. All that said however, I make it very clear that any supplementation plan must start with a commitment to good nutrition. If you think that you are going to make up for a bad diet by taking supplements you are flat out fooling yourself, and likely wasting a lot of money. Supplements are meant to supplement a good nutrition plan. When you have a dedication to eating well, not perfect, but well…supplements can be a savior and a huge difference maker as they really help with the consistency needed to see great results. Some manufacturers want you to believe that their supplement will help you overcome poor nutrition. They will make you think that you can simply sleep your way to a six pack. It’s laughable and dishonest to say the least. The hard truth of the matter is that high quality nutrition is a must if you want to really see the fastest and best results possible. QUESTION: Bob writes, Lee, "I'm a 65 year old male. I'm fairly active, and I'm thinking about joining a gym. Can I start training at this age and will I be able to build my muscles?" ANSWER: Bob, thank you for writing in, and the answer to your question is a re-sounding "yes!" Weight training can help you improve virtually at any age. Now that being said, let's see what you can expect from a good weight training program. Weight training increases muscle volume and density, which is a biomarker of aging. Typically as we get older, we experience muscle loss, and this is especially true of people who are sedentary. As we age, we also experience loss of bone density. Weight training has been shown to improve bone density in individuals also. Last but not least, because muscle tissue is a metabolically intensive tissue, it will help you to lower your body fat levels, making you leaner and healthier. Here are some things to keep in mind as you embark on a weight training program. First and foremost, visit with your doctor to make sure that you don't have any pre-existing conditions that would preclude you from engaging in a strenuous exercise program. Once you get the greenlight, then it's time to go to the gym. Remember to ease into your weight training program, allowing your body to slowly adapt to the increase loads and activity. Make sure that you learn the proper form for lifting, and that you live safely to avoid injuries. Your muscles are less elastic at your age, so you have to take care to warm up properly and stretch. You can find an excellent training program in my book the lean body promise, which you will find on my website, Labrada.com. You can also find free how- to exercise and nutrition videos on my website that can help you get started. Your nutrition program is going to be really important, and determining how much muscle you're able to gain. You want to eat a balanced diet that is high in lean proteins such as chicken, fish, egg whites, low-fat cottage cheese, and protein shakes; AND includes moderate amount of natural complex carbohydrates such a sweet potatoes, whole-grain rice, oatmeal, and beans. Add fruits and vegetables, and you are off to the races. A diet of this type naturally takes a little getting used to, especially if you eat like most Americans to do, which is to say high in sugar and fat. But I can't emphasize enough the importance of nutrition in your program. Along with your nutrition program you may find certain supplements and vitamins helpful. I always recommend a good high protein shake such as the Lean Body ready to drink shake, as it gives you lots of protein with zero sugar. You may also want to supplement with a good multivitamin, a tablespoon of fish oil each day, and some added creatine. Creatine is a naturally occurring substance that your body makes, and can help increase your strength and endurance naturally. Creatine studies done in the elderly show benefits from daily creating use. A good BCAA or in other words, a branched-chain amino acid supplement is a good addition right after your workout. One more thing you should know... as we get older, testosterone levels decline. Because testosterone is a significant factor in the ability to build muscle, you may want to have your testosterone levels checked by your doctor, and if they are low, you may want to do some research into whether testosterone replacement therapy is right for you. Just remember that there is no substitute for doing the work you do in the gym, and following a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition and rest. Dizziness Frequent bouts of dizziness or vertigo can often be a signal that your B12 stores are low. For instance, you may experience a feeling of wobbles when you get up too fast from a sitting position. Most often, people will notice the onset of dizziness suddenly when either changing positions from sitting to standing or after a right after you have experienced a significant amount of physical activity. Those low in B12 may also feel dizzy when they walk up or down stairs, which can be quite dangerous. Chronic bouts of vertigo should be brought to your doctor’s attention so they can test you for B12 deficiency. 2. Pins and Needles It’s very common to experience pins and needles if you sit cross-legged for far too long. However, pins and needles (or the feeling of numbness) throughout the body when you haven’t compressed any part of your body, can indicate a B12 issue. Numbness or the feeling of electric shock waves can be the result of nerve damage in B12 deficient patients. Nerve issues in the body can be traced back to low oxygen levels, due to poor red blood cell production, which the B12 vitamin largely affects. The uncomfortable feeling of pins and needles could also be related to a number of other potential issues including reduced blood supply or dehydration. 3. Pale Complexion Sure, the idea of vampires may seem irrational. However, the concept that vampires are pale while suffering with a craving for blood sort of makes sense. After all, creatures of the night lack the vitamin B12. Those with B12 deficiency often cast a pale complexion due to a lack of red blood cells. And those lacking in red blood cells often become ghostly in hue because the release excess bilirubin, which zaps those rosy cheeks and leaves behind a pale, yellow visage. 4. Forgetfulness Sure, we all have “brain farts,” which is what I often refer to when I frantically look for my glasses even though their perched on top of my head. Let’s face it – we have all been there! However, chronic and uncharacteristic forgetfulness may indicate a deeper medical issue, particularly if you are noticing an increased trend of forgetfulness that you are beginning to become concerned about. Many patients suffering from B12 deficiency even jump to the conclusion that they have early onset dementia or Alzheimer’s, especially if you are in your senior years. The good news here is that a simple blood test from your doctor can diagnose B12 deficiency, and a supplemental regimen can have your sharp-memory back in focus in no time! 5. Unexplained Fatigue A night of good sleep followed by a day of yawns and dragging your feet can be common for many. However, if that fatigue is felt for days—even though you regularly get a good night’s sleep—your fatigue (combined with other already mentioned symptoms) may be the result of a B12 deficiency. Researchers from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics claim that those who feel zapped of energy even though they get plenty of zzzzzzzzs may be experiencing low B12 levels. This is due to lack of red blood cell production, which is one of B12s responsibilities. Lack of red blood cells means oxygen transport to your organs is lacking, which is what can cause extreme fatigue. 6. Vision Issues No, there isn’t something in your eye causing the spotting, blurred and double vision. In fact, low B12 stores over the long term can lead to vision changes and actually damage vision. Retinal damage can result if blood vessels in the eye become blocked. As a result you may experience light sensitivity, blurred or double vision, tracers or shadows, which all result from damage to the optic nerve. Luckily, B12 supplementation can restore full vision. 7. Muscle Weakness If you go from bench pressing 100-pounds to struggling with picking up your laundry, you may be suffering a lack of B12 vitamin. Welcome to Bark & Wag 15 Minute Vet Talk – I am your host Polly ReQua Today we are talking to one of our favorite Vets, Dr. Laura Brown, owner of Green Tree Animal Hospital in Libertyville, IL as we discuss vitamins. Do you need to give your dog vitamins? Welcome. Let’s start with puppies…. Do I need to supplement my puppy's diet? Should I supplement my adult dog's diet? Talk with your veterinarian to determine which supplements may be beneficial for your dog. What if my dog is super active? What if my dog is on a diet? High quality light foods should contain adequate vitamins and minerals. If you are only feeding your pet less of his regular food to cut down, you may want to supplement with a multivitamin. Should I give my senior dog supplements? Aging dogs have special nutritional needs, and some of those can be supplied in the form of supplements. A large percentage of older dogs suffer from arthritis. We recommend a daily supplement containing glucosamine, for dogs suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other bone or joint problems. If your dog is not eating a complete balanced diet, then a vitamin/mineral supplement is recommended to prevent any deficiencies. What traits should I look for in a quality vitamin? Contains at least 8 essential vitamins including Vitamin A, B-complex, D, and E, as well as the B vitamins. Vitamins A and E are all-important antioxidants that help maintain a healthy immune system and should also be included in the supplement. Vitamins and minerals should be in the correct ratio for your pet's good health. In addition, look at the ingredient list of multi-vitamin supplements to see from which sources the vitamins and minerals are coming. There is always some controversy regarding vitamin supplementation. Many people feel supplements are very necessary. A heathy diet for dinner could include vegetable dishes with a small amount of protein (but should be had in small quantity). Dr. Berg turns 50 years old on the 31st of March.
