Protein contains 4 calories per gram Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram Fat contains 9 calories per gram You can see that fat contains more than double the calories per weight. Yes, the assumption is that consuming fat, which contains more calories will cause more weight gain. But what is rarely factored into this equation is: The HORMONE piece of the puzzle. Remember there are 6 fat burning hormones and 3 fat-storing hormones and each set is influenced by different foods. Insulin is the most powerful "fat-making hormone". It will convert food into fat easily. It is triggered by: *Sugar Carbohydrates (including grain carbs, fruit juice and starch carbs (potato, rice and corn). *Excess protein. Interestingly, fats are neutral and are not triggered by any of the fat-storing hormones. Growth Hormone (GH) is the most powerful "fat-burning hormone". It will trigger the fat-burning process. It is triggered by: *Protein (small amounts) WHY? To understand this more, we need to look at the purpose of these 3 types of foods. Protein: needed to repair and replace many body structures (muscles, tendons, collagen, hair, nails, hormones, etc.). We constantly need protein to replace the body tissue. So our body needs a certain amount of protein, and this is why only excess protein is converted to fat. We recommend 3-4 ounces. Fat: needed to repair and replace many body structures (the outer walls of all cells, mini-structures inside our cells, our entire nervous system, our entire skin, our brain and our hormones). Interestingly, there is a diet called the Ketosis Diet in which the person lives exclusively on fats and oils. I SIDE NOTE: You may then ask yourself, why then don't we apply this diet for people? Because long term, it can cause problems. Overweight for as long as he can remember, Tony attributes his nutritionally unhealthy lifestyle and food addiction to an unstable family life throughout his childhood. He had worked in food service management most of his career, but quit when he decided his weight had gotten out of control. Now, at 49 years of age, Tonys weight is teetering on the 400 lb. mark, causing him to be jobless and threatening his future with his fiancée. Tony needs help. Well, help is on the way! Chris Powell arrives to help Tony get his food addiction under control. He weighs in at 398 pounds at the start of his year-long transformation. Tony learns from Dr. Terry Schaack at the California Health and Longevity Institute that, since he carries the majority of his fat on his abdomen, he is at high risk for a variety of cardiovascular complications. Nutritionist Paulette lets him know that a lot of his weight comes from the sugary drinks he enjoys with each meal. Chris works with Tony to undo all of the years of unhealthy living that led up to this point. But the road to health is rougher than Chris had anticipated for his client. During the first workout, we learn that Tonys 28-year-old son, Marcus, is in the hospital fighting for his life. Tony decides to fight, too. Tonys home is transformed into a workout haven. Chris wants him to lose 100 pounds over the next three months. If that happens, Tony and his fiancée, Leslie, will get the honeymoon of their dreams. Speaking of Leslie, Chris challenges her to also undergo a transformation, but she doesnt seem to be fully committed. It causes a strain in their relationship. The stress takes a toll on Tonys weight loss. Chris makes him climb up over 400 feet in elevation to the scale at the top of a long set of steps. At the 90-day weigh-in, Tony comes in at 294 pounds. He reached his first goal with four pounds to spare! Tony is challenged to lose 60 pounds over the next 90 days. After four weeks of no contact, Chris learns that things with Leslie have cooled. Chris helps Tony move out of the house. On Day 168, we learn that Tony is basically living out of his car. That hasnt stopped him from working out. At the 60-day weigh-in, Chris learns that Tony is basically homeless. This is something hes been through, too. He promises that things will get better. At the weigh-in, Tony learns he only lost 29 pounds. To help get Tony back on track, Chris sends him to the Los Angeles Bodyguard Training Academy. They help him learn what it takes to start up his new business. Tony is hit with some bad news during Phase 3. His son Marcus has passed away. Chris meets up with him at the funeral service in Michigan. This is the first time his other son, Tony Jr., has seen him since he began his transformation. Chris also meets Tonys new girlfriend, who seems very supportive. After the service, Tony lets his son and ex know that hes been homeless. Its a highly-emotional scene. Tony returns home to continue his journey with an angel on his shoulder. He also reached out to Chris to take part in some therapy. This helps with his weight loss. At the 9-month weigh-in, Tony looks fantastic. Since he didnt get to enjoy the honeymoon prize that was the reward for making his first weigh-in goal, Chris gives him the cash equivalent of the trip to help Tony get back on his feet. At Day 270, Tony weighs in at 226 pounds. He says he couldnt have done it without the inspiration of his son Marcus. Tony is now an excellent candidate for the skin removal surgery. Three months later, its time for the final weigh-in. The crowd goes wild as they see a man who let nothing get in the way of his goal. Tony is all smiles when he arrives. He wants to be at 199 pounds when he steps on the scale. He comes in at 198. That means he lost a total of 200 pounds! The more treats you give a rabbit, the more you're going to help that rabbit become obese. There are a few reasons to avoid obesity in a rabbit. They're just joining us, the rest of the United States, we're doing this in the United States and everybody knows we're a fat country and we're making our pets fat, too. We want to avoid that. Good reasons for avoiding that in rabbits are many. One of them is that rabbits are prodigious self-groomers and they will keep themselves immaculately clean as long as they can. But if you allow a rabbit to develop the equivalent of a big beer-belly, the rabbit can no longer reach down and clean herself adequately and they you'll end up with a dirty bum. You'll have to be bathing her, giving her butt baths, etc, etc. An obese rabbit is also a rabbit who is resting her hock bones on very thin skin and the more weight she has on her body, the more pressure that bone is exerting on the skin and that can create sore or ulcerated hocks. Obese rabbits don't move as readily, they're much more sluggish, they don't exercise as much and they lose the benefits of exercising. So all told, obese rabbits can face the same kinds of problems as obese humans, except that we don't clean our butts the same way rabbits do. So what do we do when we feed rabbits to prevent obesity? Besides giving them a high fiber diet, which is hay, hay,hay, we also give them only very small quantities of rabbit pellets. What I like to do is to measure the quantity and here I have just basic rabbit pellets in a bowl and I pick a scoop, this is a quarter of a cup scoop, and when I feed my foster rabbits every day, I measure it out carefully, I don't guesstimate, I don't use a handful because my hands are bigger than some other peoples' and I would get too many pellets. And I put a quarter cup of pellets in a bowl and this will do a rabbit up to five pounds very nicely. Quarter of a cup per five pounds of body weight per day. When a rabbits weight is above five pounds, you can add a little more. This rabbit could get a third of a cup of pellets per day. A ten pound rabbit could get a half a cup of pellets per day. If you only have one scoop, you put a quarter of a scoop in and then just take a little more, like this, and add it on top. And that would be a good daily portion for this rabbit. Now, people are always very concerned about whether their rabbits will be hungry if they don't give them more pellets, if they don't give them unlimited pellets throughout the day. Not eating enough vegetables/calories Most people who try intermittent fasting end up cutting weight. rather rapidly. You might plan big meals, but consistently eating them is difficult in practice and so underrating can become a problem. Underrating may allow you to drop weight quickly (by losing water and even muscle if the deficit is low enough ) but this is short lived. The benefits of intermittent fasting come when you make it a long-term habit — so it’s important to start with reasonable fasts such as 16 hours rather than 24 hours. Remember, the results you’re seeing are coming from the calories rather than your fasting. When you’re breaking your fast you may opt for unhealthy foods to satiate yourself, and caloric dense foods can be a great way of getting your calories in, but you don’t want to forget to eat your vegetables. You may miss out on fruits and vegetables as your stomach expands too much from the first meal. What I recommend is dedicating one meal to being high fat and high in vegetables. Use vegetables as a shuttling system to get fat into your body. For example, spinach salad with avocado, olive oil, salmon and walnuts. 2. Don’t fear the clock This isn’t very important, but it’s worth addressing. Some people will be adhering to a 16/8 schedule and become too tedious about what times they’re eating. Again, if you want this to be a sustainable change in your life it can be smart to maintain a casual schedule of intermittent fasting rather than very strict times. This is, of course, personal preference, but I find that for most people being more casual about times and going by how your body feels is far superior. Focusing on macronutrients and calories is always your priority; remember this. For example, one may choose to fast from 12-8 one day, 2-6 the next and 10-7 the following day. 3. Additives Any food or drink with a caloric value will spike your insulin, albeit some are much less than others (e.g fat). A common mistake is eating too much, but another is eating too little. What I mean by this is some will think that zero calories mean zero calories. A little cream or butter in your coffee won’t “ruin” your fast, but a snack or a few coffees with a lot of milk will. As long as you’re under 20-30 calories, you’ll be fine. Artificial sweeteners are also fine as they generally have no calories. Without enough protein during weight loss, the weight we loss would be mainly muscle mass. In the long run, our metabolism rate will be even lower as muscle mass tend to increase the metabolic rate. To optimise weight loss, make sure each meals contains a high protein food. 3) Not Eating Enough Fiber Fiber is proven to aids in weight loss. Fiber is indigestible carbohydrates found in the foods. Studies shows that fiber helps in reducing appetite by forming a gel that holds water which indirectly reducing the calorie intake. Having enough fiber also help in reducing cholesterol and also internal detoxification which will indirectly aid in the process of weight loss. More frequently you eat more metabolic rate your body will achieve and in return burn more calorie. Eating sugar containing food or drink will signal your body to secret insulin, which basically then aids your body to store those sugar into the body cells. Natural sugars are fine. E.g fruits, milk, vegetables. Avoid added sugar at all cost. Read the food labels and check how much sugar is added to it. Is it natural sugar or the added sugar? You may want to research a bit more on Glycaemic index and the type of food low and high in GI index. Calorie deficit diet and exercise plan is important in losing weight. This means if your body remains at 80kg weight when you consume 2000 calorie a day. To lose weight you need to make a calorie deficit diet by either eating about 500 calorie less or including exercise plan to burn extra 500 calorie or a mixture of both. Losing more than about 2 kg a week may lead to unhealthy weight loss such as muscles mass loss in addition to fat loss. Therefore to avoid this eating very healthy diet is important. We look at brands, "headlines", and health claims and "go with it". Are our good intentions being stolen? Perhaps, yes. I was asked about "protein Weetabix" this week. *** "i've switched to protein Weetabix to increase my protein intake to keep me full up and help me recover" *** ^^^ Technically, this is correct. There is more protein in "protein weetabix" But how much more? Well, 3 WHOLE grams more Which is equivalent to eating about a teaspoon of chicken (if that)... I guess every little helps... But the quality of the protein is also poor. It's just added protein from wheat or flour (cheap and inexpensive). ^^^ Which doesn't provide as much of the ESSENTIAL building blocks that your body needs to get from a diet than say, animal protein or fish does. This means that you may have to actually eat more wheat to achieve the same effect as you would from simply eating animal protein (lean meats, dairy, eggs etc.) or fish. What I'm leading up to is this: Don't believe everything you read on the front of the packaging. Protein is the "buzzword" right now. Protein Snickers... Protein Mars bars.. You name it. But this doesn't make it "healthy" and it doesn't mean it will help you lose weight and tone up. Hey, so here I talk weight loss tips. I tell you how to take your Maintenance calories and change them to LOSE FAT and NOT MUSCLE. (and it is NOT just cutting 500 calories!) While protein should be kept the same or even raised, it's carbohydrate that sees the biggest change. Here's the transcript: Your first week of weight loss should be the most successful, because you lose water weight which is normally a few lbs in itself. After that an average of half a kilo, or a pound a week, is a good target. Even an average of half a pound a week will make a difference. A pound a week is 52 pounds a year, which is almost 4 stone. That's a realistic rate, so don't worry if some guy on the internet lost 4 stone in 12 weeks eating 500 calories a day and living in the gym. Weight loss isn't a competition, and 95% of people who lose weight will put it back on within 5 years, so it's more about building habits. In fact if you think about it, the longer your weight loss journey takes, the longer you spend building healthy eating habits. If you aren't losing weight, drop your daily target by 200 calories. You might hear people say to drop it by 500, that's because 500 a day for 7 days is the equivalent to 1 pound of fat. While that's great in theory, actually doing it is not that simple. If you do that on a Monday then by Thursday you're 2,000 calories down on what you're used to, which is like missing almost an entire day of food. Your body's going to notice that, it's going to get stressed, and you'll end up binge eating. Here's a little sliding scale of calories a day. In the middle is what you need to maintain weight, either side as I said in my health series, you can go 200 calories higher or lower and your body won't really notice. That's actually why most people are fat in the first place. They ate a little too much every day, and the weight gain snuck up on them. So just like you'd notice if you ate 500 calories too much every day, you'll notice if it's 500 too few. For me on 2,400 calories a day, that would drop me to 1,900. I'd notice that pretty quickly, so instead i'll drop it by 200 to 2,200. I can either cruise along at 2,200 and take longer to reach my goal, or if I feel like my body has adapted to 2,200, I can sneak it down to 2,000. Now in terms of where those calories come from, I want to keep my muscle so my protein stays the same, i've read it's beneficial to actually increase protein slightly on a fat loss diet to preserve your muscle. It is super important you keep your muscle, as that's what burns so many of your daily calories. If you aren't already you should definitely include some weight training or bodyweight exercises when trying to lose weight. In terms of fat, I need a minimum of a gram of fat per kilo in bodyweight. If you're getting above that level then you can bring it down, but we'll assume it's staying the same. That means we're taking it from carbs. 200 calories is 50 grams of carbs, and the best time to cut those is when i'm not exercising. So before I was taking on 160 grams of carbs on rest days, that's down to 110 grams. On days I exercise I was on 290 grams of carbs, so that drops to 240. If I exercise in the morning i'll take those carbs from dinner, because I still want to fuel my workouts. Vice versa if I gym in the evening i'd cut those carbs at breakfast. Be aware there is also a minimum for carb intake in a day, and that's around 100 grams. That's because your brain runs on glucose, and if you have a job that's mentally taxing you might need more than 100 as a minimum. If you dip below that your brain won't get the fuel it needs, you'll struggle to concentrate, you won't think clearly and you'll become forgetful and you'll also become forgetful. So my new numbers look like this. If I have a bowl of oatmeal every morning, maybe I change that to a four egg omelette to cut my carbs for the day. If i'm exercising in the morning i'll still want my oats, but maybe i'll cut down on the rice I have at dinner and replacing it with lots of fibrous vegetables.
