How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. Before we start I have to bring up a misconception about supplements that many people have especially beginners. The problem that I hope to alleviate for you today is that there are tons of supplements out there while really there are only a couple of them that actually work. The first supplement that can help and is probably the most widely used supplement is protein powder. It may be hard for you to get enough protein from your diet and supplementing with protein powder can definitely help you hit your Macros. It's also great to have after a workout and when you're on the go. There are so many different types of protein that I have a whole video specifically about protein powders that I'll link up at the end. But I really like whey protein because it's cheap it tastes good and your body is very efficient with it. My favorite brand is Optimum Nutrition 100% gold standard whey isolate. If you're lactose intolerant consider an egg-based protein powder instead. The Next supplement that works very well is creatine. Different people will experience different results with different types of creatine and there are a lot of different types. Monohydrate is pretty much the most basic form of creatine, probably the cheapest, and it happens to be the most studied. Creatine monohydrate has proven itself in study after study so it's a pretty safe bet to start with. There are many other types like kre akalybn for example that claim to reduce bloating and claim to eliminate the need to cycle off of creatine. However not one type of creatine has the kind of backing with scientific evidence that monohydrate has. My favorite creatine brand is probably the cheapest one. It's just plain Monohydrate from Now sports. I used to take cell tech hardcore when I used to bulk and it would always help me put on some weight. However this was like 5 years ago so they've probably change the formula by now and the old formula used to have tons of sugar in it. Like I said now if I take creatine it'll be the plain monohydrate from Now sports. Next up are your stimulants and your supplements that give you energy. Nitric oxide, caffeine, vitamin b, and beta alanine again that's all you need. Nitric oxide will help give you a great pump during your workouts and will also give you a bunch of energy and help you squeeze out those last couple reps. Beta alanine will decrease lactic acid build-up in your muscles during your sets. Which will allow you to recover faster between your sets. By decreasing fatigue beta alanine will also be another great tool to help you push out extra reps. The one side effect of beta alanine is that youll feel pins and needles when you first start taking it but it'll become less intense over time. Caffeine and vitamin B you can take anytime.

You first must figure out how to rededicate yourself to your nutrition so that you can lose enough weight to make supplements a viable part of the discussion once again to take you and your results to the next level. Next you have to ask yourself if you are motivated enough to take supplements. Some people view supplementation as a way to be lax with the rest of their fitness and nutrition plan. They figure that as long as they are taking the supplements that they don’t have to worry much about everything else. Couldn’t be further from the truth. On the other hand, sometimes the act of supplementing makes you much more accountable for the rest of your actions. In this case, it can be a great advantage to helping you stay on track. If stress is a big part of your life, be it from your work or family, supplements can become even more necessary to help keep you on track and combat that. We all know that proper nutrition and fueling can go a long way towards helping your body fight fatigue and breakdown. If stress is heavy in your life then you would particularly want to look into supplements to help keep you healthy and consistent with your nutrition in the face of schedule disruption. Finally, ask yourself if you think that you can get all the benefits of supplements from food alone. If you think so, I can tell you in most cases you are wrong. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. Why Spend Money on Vitamins and Minerals That Don't Provide Benefits

Popular vitamin and mineral supplements didn't provide any measurable health benefits to prevent cardiovascular disease, stroke or early death, according to a new study. The study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American College of Cardiology found no helpful or harmful outcomes for people who took multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin C. Results were based on analysis of existing information, mainly published between January 2012 and October 2017. There were some exceptions: Folate and other B-vitamins (B6 and B12) did surface some minor evidence of reducing heart disease risk and risk of stroke, largely because of a Chinese study included in the overall research. Meanwhile, niacin and antioxidants showed a very small effect that might signify an increased risk of death from any cause. Authors note that participants involved in some of the studies, might not be representative of the general population. So, consult a medical professional before tossing or buying any recommended vitamins. The study was funded by the Canadian federal government and by food retailer Loblaw Companies. Generally, vitamin and mineral supplements are taken to add to nutrients that are found in food. Instead of opting for supplements, it is advised to consume needed nutrients through a more plant-based diet of less processed food. Existing trials haven’t shown that supplements can capture the nutrients in the same way food does, said an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who is not affiliated with the study. These findings suggest that people should be conscious of the supplements they're taking and ensure they're applicable to the specific vitamin or mineral deficiencies they have been advised of by their healthcare provider. It’s important for people to tell their doctor what supplements they are taking to be sure of no side-effects or risks. Also, because most supplements are not FDA-regulated, it is advised to be aware of other substances that could be included in the actual pills. Instead of relying on a multi-vitamin, consider making important natural health choices at mealtime. In addition, vitamins and minerals from food sources are usually more easily digested and used by the body than synthetic vitamins. Save money by buying fewer nutritional supplements. Buy only the vitamins whose requirements are difficult to meet at mealtimes. This isn't the first time medical professionals have questioned taking supplements. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has said there is insufficient evidence on benefits or harms of multivitamins to prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer and actually recommends against taking β-carotene or vitamin E. In 2013, a group of professors at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health told people to "stop wasting money on vitamin and mineral supplements." 5 Things Supplements WON’T Do (REALITY CHECK!)

In this video, I’m going to tell you the truth and show you 5 things that supplements will not do for you and why you need to be aware of them as you incorporate them into your overall fitness regiment. The first big mistake made by many is to focus too much on the supplement and not enough on the workout. In other words, if you feel as if your work is accomplished because you remembered to take your supplements you are in for a rude awakening. How do I know this? Because I made the very some novice mistake when I first began training. I thought that as long I took my protein (Hot Stuff specifically) that I would magically grow new muscles without caring much about my workouts, my form or even how I was doing each exercise. The opposite approach should be taken. Focus on how to make your workouts more intense and how to get more out of every single second you are in the gym and the supplements as an after thought or an adjunct to that hard training. Let the supplements help translate the high intensity and effort you put into your workout into something incredible when you remain consistent with both. Next, thinking that supplements will be a substitute or help you overcome a poor nutrition plan or bad eating habits is a major mistake. Your nutrition is where your aesthetic results start and stop. If you refuse to get your eating in check and think that you will just use supplements to help you outdo any of the bad you are doing with your poor food choices, think again. In fact, I always recommend that unless you are under 30 percent body fat, I don’t believe that you should be concentrating on supplementation. Beyond that, you also don’t want to get in the habit of thinking about your supplements as meal replacements. There is no replacement for a good sound nutrition plan that fills your body with adequate macronutrients and micronutrients as well as healthy sources of fiber. Liquid protein shakes are great to supplement a meal but not as a meal replacement for one of your big meals of the day. When used as a replacement, I recommend that this occurs in place of a snack and that even then, you are including other foods as well to help round out the meal (like nuts, fruit, etc). Another big mistake is to think that supplements can negate the need for other supplements. For instance, if you are taking a protein powder it doesn’t mean that you don’t need a pre workout. Now, if your goals in your training do not require an improved performance and energy or focus in your workouts then you may not need a pre workout at all. However, in either case, simply taking one does not mean that the other is unnecessary. When done right, supplements should serve a very specific purpose in the big picture and not overlap but compliment each other. Finally, even if you have your supplement game on point and your nutrition and training are locked in, you cannot automatically consider yourself healthy. I know many a guy that thinks this way and then proceeds to drink way too much on the weekend, smoke a pack of cigarettes a day or even use recreational drugs as a form of, well, recreation! None of these things will be able to be undone simply by the fact that you take the latest protein or recovery supplement on the market! What is vitamin B12, where do you get it and what depletes it? What are the best sources of vitamin B12? If you got a blood test and they told you your B12 was low, it doesn’t mean anything. Serum B12 levels do not reflect true B12 levels since most B12 in the body is stored in the liver and blood tests do not determine stored B12 levels.   http://www.MarkusNews.com B12 is stored in the body for years and years and the odds are that in that time, you will accumulate more B12. Vitamin B12 is basically bacteria poop. In the natural world, (the way we were designed to live), you would pull a carrot out of the ground, brush it off and eat it. There would be little bits of dirt and millions of microscopic organisms all over that carrot. B12! Do you actually think in the 5-7 years B12 stays in your body, you are not going to be exposed to some dirt and bacteria? Heck, even your own gut bacteria, (your probiotics) produce some B12. They say vegetarians and vegans need to supplement B12 because they don’t eat meat. That’s another joke. 90 percent of America is meat eaters and 60 percent of America is deficient in B12, … so how come half the meat eaters are low in B12? Well lets look at why meat eaters sometimes have more B12. It’s not rocket science. Meat is rotting flesh. There’s a lot of nasty bacteria in meat. The minute anything is killed- plant or animal, it starts to decay. Decaying meat requires more aggressive and dangerous bacteria than plants. If you lived in nature only eating plants, you’d be getting more than enough B12. There’s even some B12 in my green formula. Seaweed is a great source of B12. Those of you who get my Sea Moss, haha- what an experience when you open that bag huh? All dirty and smelly. What a nasty fishy smell. That’s what stuff is like when you take it fresh right out of the ocean. It’s FULL of B12. Even after washing and soaking it multiple times, there is still B12 stuck in the tiny pores. There’s B12 in nutritional yeast, even kale and farm produce that still has some dirt stuck in the cracks. Remember also, you have 5 pounds of beneficial bacteria in your gut which also produces some B12. You can feed them and make them stronger by eating more fiber- that's what they love to eat. Then there’s fermented and cultured foods- a GREAT source of B12. Every little bit adds up. And since it stays in your body for years, odds are you are getting enough B12. Now it’s possible that you may actually be low in B12. So the REAL question isn’t “where do I get B12”,…it should be “what’s robbing me of B12 and how can I stop it?” The answer to all of your health issues should not be “what do I take” but “what do I STOP doing that’s causing the problem in the first place”, otherwise you are simply trying to patch holes in a sinking ship. The first place to look is your stomach. B12 is acid dependent for absorption. Older people have B12 issues not because they don’t have enough B12 in their body, but because it can’t ABSORB properly because stomach acidity declines with age. Bread, bagels and other wheat products absorb stomach acid like a sponge. They also turn into simple sugars which feeds candida yeast and H Pylori which radically deplete stomach acid. Antacids, baking soda and alkaline water cancels out stomach acid. Most people have low stomach acid as a result from not knowing what and how to eat.  Almost everybody, even raw foodists are sugar addicts and they choose what to eat based on how it tastes, not what they really need, resulting in a body that doesn't work right. Ok, anyway, if you want B12 to absorb, you need strong stomach acid for for that you need to cut down on bread and sugar and start adding more bitter things to your diet. You can rebuild stomach acid by using more acids in your diet like apple cider vinegar, lemon etc, and also sea salt, B-complex vitamins and 50 mg zinc with meals, plus bitter greens like arugula, endives, watercress etc and also my liver formula.  Do NOT drink alkaline water! This speeds up the whole mess of weakening stomach acid, nutrient absorption, lower B12 etc. Another thing that lowers stomach acid is adrenal burnout, the biggest factors being stress and stimulants- coffee, energy drinks, sugar, stuff like that. You can strengthen your adrenals with adaptogenic herbs like licorice root, ashwagandha, schizandra berry, astragalus, jiaogulan, nettle leaf and alma berry. You can get your own or simply get my Adrenal kit where I put the herbs together for you. As B12 pills go, sublingual methylcobalamin is the kind you want, not cyanocobalamin. Sure you can pop a B12 pill. But listen to what I’m saying. But for the 99% of us, surely we are missing out on some of the micronutrients our body needs to function at 100%. Using a multivitamin can be a great tool to boost your overall health, and prevent you from getting sick. A multivitamin can strengthen your immune system, help you recover from a workout quicker, and even help your hair grow more quickly. Ideally we should be getting all of our nutrition from whole food sources such as plants, nuts, berries, fruits, vegetables, and animals. However, in today's fast paced world it can be difficult to focus on these basics. If you choose to use a multivitamin to get some of your nutrition in, just remember it is just a supplement. I would still try to get a lot of your vitamins from whole food sources, if I were you. Also, keep in mind not all multivitamins are created equal. Some may have better ingredients, and perhaps more importantly, some capsules/tablets are designed to be absorbed better than others.
