Childcare certificates will create a more flexible work schedule, fewer hours if you please and a higher paying job. In order for you to even think about getting your 45 childcare hours, you will need a valid driver’s license or Florida ID. Next you will need to have access to a computer. Also, you would need to pick up the three mandatory books that are free after you pay for the classes. First off, you would need to go to the Miami Dade website, apply and pay for the noncredit classes. There is about three different classes you must register for. These classes are called 30 Hours Child Care Facility Personnel Training, 5 Hours Literacy in Early Care and Education, and 10 Hours Preschool Appropriate Practices. When you register for the classes make sure you have time to get to class everyday and that it works around your schedule. Next, you will have to make time to pick up your three books at the campus for which you registered and the books will be able to be picked up in the continuing education of the campus. Make sure the books are in the correct language and are the correct books, which should be titled, Child Care Training, Child Care Facility Rules and Regulations, and Preschool Appropriate Practice. Furthermore, when you go to pick up your books, the staff there will assist you in building your DCF website profile, which is mandatory for taking these courses. After you make your profile, you verify your personal information on the DCF website and login to it at your home a day or two after you have created the profile. The website to login in https://training01-dcf.myflorida.com/studentsite/admin/login.jsf After you have your books and ensure that the website profile is correct and working. You must attend 45 hours of classes. In the class your professor will give you very miniscule and easy activities from the book and will give you the answers to fill in the blank of each section. There are seven different sections and six different exams you must pass to be certified, so make sure to pay close attention in class. The seven different sections are called, Childcare Facility Rules and Regulations (FACR), Health, Safety, and Nutrition (HSAN), Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (CAAN), Child Growth and Development (CGAD), Behavioral Observation and Screening (BOSR), Pre-School Appropriate Practices (PSAP), and Early Literacy and Language Development. For the five hours of Early Literacy and Language Development there is no exam, just make sure that you have signed in on the attendance sheet of each day of class. After you have finished each section of the classes you can apply on the DCF website to take your certificate exam, the exam ranges from 25 – 35 questions and is fairly easy. You must make sure to pay attention in class and study for it. Each exam has a different cost; in total all the exams cost 40 dollars all together. You can pay all the exams together or one by one. You can take more than one exam on your scheduled exam date if you’d like, just register ahead of time. I recommend you take up to 3 exams on the same day, the limit is five exams in one sitting. When you arrive at the exam on the exam date, you will need to arrive 45 minutes early, make sure to have your Florida ID or drivers license with you and number 2 pencils. If you cannot make it to an exam for whatever reason you will have to cancellation your enrollment from the exam at least a week before your exam date, if not you will face some penalties. Also, make sure the ID you present for the exam is not expired if not it can create a big problem on exam date. Make sure to have your cell phone completely turned off and not on your person during the exam, if not you will be unable to take the section of the exam you are taking until 6 months later. I recommend that you schedule the exams as soon and as close as your classes are done, so that the material is still fresh. After you finish all your exams, you can check if you passed them, in about two weeks after the exam date. If you pass the exam, make sure to print out your certificate from the DCF website. If you did not pass, you can pay again and retake the exam at the next available test date. Overall, the steps are quite simple in receiving your 45 childcare hours, you just must register for the three classes, pick up the mandatory books, create a profile on DCF which the staff of continuing education staff will assist you with, attend and sign in for every class you have registered. Next, you will need to pay attention and register for the certification exams on the DCF website Print out the certificates when you pass the exams and you are all set. Once you have received and passed all the exams, your five hours of literacy certificate will be sent by mail. Once you have all of that, you can start applying to daycares and afterschool programs. Now, the future looks bright and full of great opportunities. Mdc.net

Operators at drinking water and wastewater treatment plants provide one of the most valuable services to Americans. Operators work in vital jobs that we can't do without. They keep us supplied with a necessity of life 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Water keeps us alive and is delivered or treated in order to protect our health. This video includes interviews with two operators who talk about how they got into the field and what skills they use in their jobs. This video can be shown to encourage people to enter the field, including high school and college students, including those at community colleges. A shortage of certified operators is expected in the coming years because of the upcoming retirements of many current operators. Rural areas especially need young and willing operators.

Watch more All about Apartment Rentals videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/241916-How-to-Evict-a-Tenant Take pains to remove a renter from your property legally, or you could find yourself on the wrong side of the law. Step 1: Check your local laws Contact your county clerk's office to check the laws governing eviction proceedings in your jurisdiction. Tip If you are managing government-subsidized housing, follow the eviction rules established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Step 2: Know your rights Know the valid reasons for evicting a tenant, which include nonpayment of rent, a violation of their lease, and creating a health or safety problem. Landlords do not need a reason to evict month-to-month tenants, and they can choose not to renew a tenant's lease without giving a reason. Step 3: Don't evict on your own Don't attempt to evict your tenant by force, or try to get them to leave by cutting off their heat or water, changing their locks, or tossing their possessions. These methods are all illegal. Step 4: Have a paper trail Have your documentation in order, including a copy of the lease, written notices you have sent to the tenant concerning any problems, and any other proof of your claim, like bounced rent checks or photos of property damage. Step 5: Give them fair notice Let the tenant know in writing that you are planning to evict them if they don't pay their rent or correct a violation by a certain date. How much time you must give them varies from state to state. Tip If you are evicting a month-to-month tenant without cause, make sure you are giving the advance notice required by your state, which can be anywhere from 20 to 90 days. Step 6: Go to court If the tenant hasn't addressed the problem within the time frame cited, file an eviction notice with the local court. If the tenant doesn't respond within the time defined by the court, you win by default. If the tenant challenges the eviction, the case may go to a hearing. Step 7: Post a notice If you win the case, a representative of the court – like a sheriff, marshal, or constable – will post a notice on the tenant's door giving them a move-out date, at which time the tenant and their possessions will be forcibly removed from the premises by the court representative if they haven't vacated on their own. Step 8: Cover their cost If the tenant wins, you will have to let them stay and pay their costs of fighting the eviction, in most cases. So be sure to follow the letter of the law before starting proceedings! Did You Know? The number of cases landlords filed in New York City for back rent rose 19 percent in the first two months of 2009.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick speaks with Dr. Satchidananda Panda, a professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. Satchin's work deals specifically with the timing of food and it's relationship with our biological clocks governed by circadian rhythm and also the circadian rhythm in general. ▶︎ Get the show notes! https://www.foundmyfitness.com/episodes/satchin-panda In this video we discuss... •The fascinating history of experimentation that ultimately elucidated the location for the region of the brain necessary for a properly timed sleep-wake cycles. • The relationship between our body's "master clock" and it's many peripheral clocks. • Why infants sleep so intermittently, instead of resting for a longer, sustained duration like healthy young adults... and why this sustained rest also goes haywire in the elderly. • The fascinating work Dr. Panda took part in that lead to the discovery of a specialized light receptor in the eye that sets circadian rhythms and is known as melanopsin. • The important relationship between the relatively light insensitive melanopsin, which requires around 1,000 lux of light to be fully activated, and its control of the circadian clock by means of activation of the suprachiasmatic nucleus and suppression of melatonin. • The effects light exposure seems to have on next-day cortisol, a glucocorticoid hormone that regulates around 10-20% of the human protein-encoding genome. • The clever experimental design by which Dr. Panda and his colleagues discovered that certain circadian rhythms, especially of the liver, are entrained by when we eat, instead of how much light we get. This underlines the fact that, when managing are circadian rhythm, both elements are important! • One of the more surprising effects of time-restricted feeding in mice eating a so-called healthy diet: increases in muscle mass and even endurance in some cases. You can try out time-restricted feeding and contribute to human research! Commit to 14 weeks and download Dr. Panda's mobile app to get started. Ok so I was looking at this graph put on Uber’s website today and thought it looked too good to be true. How amazing that Uber drivers make more than any other type of driver. But I knew from my own experience as a rider that Uber didn’t cost that much. In fact, Uber is pretty cheap if you’re a passenger. Sooooo…. how can uber be so cheap, and yet the drivers make so much money??? Now Uber has cut pay to drivers in Detroit to 24cents a mile , but we’re going to stick to the 90c for now. Uber takes 20% of the total fare from the driver for older drivers. Newer drivers get 25% taken. So we’re down to 67.5c per mile. Then you have to deduct tax: In some LA County's, sales tax is as high as 10%, and Uber doesn’t withold taxes for you. The drives are responsible for keeping this money aside to pay the tax department in April. So with the 10% deducted, we’re down to (just over 60 cents) 60.75c Now we need to factor in depreciation of the car. A car is an asset like anything else, and will eventually wear out and you’ll have to buy a new one. Every mile you drive decreases the value of your car and brings you that much closer to needing a new one. This is a big problem if you drive for a living, you’re going to need to buy a new car every two or three years and the cost of a new car is significant. The IRS estimates vehicle cost to drive a vehicle for work at $0.54 a mile . Broken down into Fuel costs @ an average of 12c per mile Depreciation at $0.24c per mile. Repairs, tyres, & maintainence at 9c per mile Insurance, licence, registration, finance, fees - average out to around 9c per mile So with 54c depreciation, repairs, and fuel accounted for, we’re down to just over 6c per mile that actually goes into your hands of drivers. Given that Uber also asks its drivers to buy things like bottles of water, gum, and chargers for it’s passengers, we can say for certain that driving for Uber pays well below minimum wage or even worse, costing drivers money (as is seen directly in this actual fare uber charged one of it’s drivers). So given the math is so bad, why does anyone drive for Uber? Here’s an example of a post an Uber driver posted - he was $400 behind on the rent, and needed to make up some quick cash. In a way, uber is kind of like a loans scheme. Now for some people in desperate circumstances, what Uber’s offering might be an acceptable deal. But for most people, driving for Uber is a waste of time. I wish Uber would be more honest with people. By our calculations, the amount you’re making as an uber driver is nowhere near $19 per hour. If you drive 30 miles per hour at 6.75c per hour, you’re only making $2.00 per mile - by far the worst choice of any transportation job. This number is supported by Not Cool Uber, who have tracked hourly earnings to be around $2.89 and, after vehicle fees are taken into account, $0. Now – I’m not against car pooling. We all need transport, and I know I am a frequent user of Uber & Lyft. But I think that Uber is going about it in an unethical way, which makes me unethical for supporting them as a customer. Uber could easily fix this situation : by reducing their commission, by making rates more reasonable, by giving riders the option to Tip their drivers, or just by being transparent. But that would mean admitting that they’ve generated significant revenue from effectively exploiting their drivers. So the truth is, Uber benefits from maintaining this status quo. Uber is currently reported to be making $10 billion in revenue per year - and that money has to come from someone. Just don’t let that someone be you. Effects of Paying When you pay an older collection account or charge-off account, your credit score most likely will suffer. Think twice before paying off an old collection or charge off. By paying your debt, it renews the date of last activity. The collection company or creditors can now report the account for another 7 years. Everyone knows debt collections are bad for your credit score. Any past due accounts including debt collections have negative effects. These accounts report on your credit report for up to7 years. As accounts age, they have less and less impact on your credit score. Many consumers believe by paying off collections or charge-off accounts, that it will raise their credit scores. It certainly seems logical; however it is far from the truth. If you are concerned about your credit score, paying off debts prior to obtaining any other type of loan or mortgage can greatly hurt your credit score. Ultimately, if it is an older account when paid off (or payments are made on the account), by doing so can be devastating to ones credit score. The recent activity of any derogatory item has a big impact on how it effects your overall credit score. Is the Debt Still Valid? After a certain period of inactivity on an account, a debt becomes time-barred and debt collectors can no longer sue you for it. This period is known as "the statute of limitations on debt" and varies by state. If the statute of limitations has passed, it is illegal for a debt collector or creditor to sue you. You need to be careful in communicating with a debt collector because the debt statute of limitations can easily be restarted by acknowledging that you owe the debt, making a payment, entering a payment plan, making an agreement to pay or making a charge on the account. After 7 Years Collection and charge-off accounts should only remain on your credit report for 7 years. It is important to check your credit reports as the credit bureaus often continue reporting these derogatory accounts over the 7 year limit. If you have any questions regarding collection accounts on your credit reports, call our office today for your complimentary credit consultation. We look forward to hearing from you. 480-502-5554 LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The advice provided is for informational purposes only. It is not to be construed as Legal Counsel or Legal Advice.

Created at the Columbus State Hospital in the 1950s, “City of the Sick” is a documentary about mental illness and the hospital itself, narrated by a fictional hospital attendant (Ken Kesey he's not). According to the narration, one of every twenty people in the city would suffer from a mental illness in this era. According to Professor Robert Wagner, who helped create the film, it was actually intended for new attendants and "was both instructional and motivational. We tried to establish how mental patients behave and how an attendant should react to what went on inside the hospital as an introduction to his work." Hydrotherapy is seen at the 15 minute mark, and electroshock therapy seen at 15:20. Columbus State Hospital first opened in 1838 and was originally known as the "Lunatic Asylum of Ohio". After a fire devastated the original asylum in 1868, the Ohio Legislature authorized reconstruction of the institution on a different tract of land. An immense Kirkbride building was completed in 1877. Construction took seven years and the total cost was over $1,500,000. The building was very similar in appearance to the Athens State Hospital Kirkbride, although it was significantly larger. The distance around the foundation was reportedly one and a quarter miles in length. The building was designed to accommodate 850 patients—well over Dr. Kirkbride's prescribed 250 patient limit and still greater than the more generous AMSAII recommendation of 600 patients. The institution closed in the late 1980s. Unfortunately, attempts at preservation failed and the Kirkbride was razed in 1991. The Ohio Department of Public Safety and Department of Transportation now call the former asylum grounds home, sharing them with four remaining hospital cemeteries. This video will provide you with a brief overview of scenario planning. It will also share some of the resources that we, the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), offer to agencies interested in conducting scenario planning. Scenario planning is a technique that helps assess and prepare for possible future conditions. Each scenario tells a different, plausible story about the future. Using input from the public and other stakeholders, agencies can create scenarios that incorporate a wide variety of factors, such as housing, employment, socioeconomic trends, environmental features, vehicle miles traveled, and others. The specific factors incorporated in scenarios will depend on what the agency hopes to accomplish in its scenario planning effort. By creating several different scenarios, agencies can better assess what might occur in the future for a given region or area. As a result, agencies are able to make more informed decisions about how to plan for the future. More information about our workshops, Webinars, and other scenario planning resources are available on FHWA's Scenario Planning Web site at: www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/scenplan/index.htm [CLOSED CAPTIONED]

Public Lecture: Research-informed health policy: turning data into information to guide policy and improve health Presenters: Dr Robert L. Phillips & Dr Andrew Bazemore, Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care, Washington DC Date: Wed 4 April, 2 -- 3pm Venue: Finkel Theatre, John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU Health care reform in the US is well underway despite political and legal challenges. Experiments in expanding access to healthcare while simultaneously bending the cost curve are underway. Drs. Phillips and Bazemore will discuss some of these, including Accountable Care Organizations and Patient Centered Medical Homes, and review some of the evidence about improved quality and reduced costs. They will also demonstrate tools that the Robert Graham Center has developed for federal and state governments to turn data into information about where care is delivered, where to put new resources more effectively, where disparities reduce health, and where resources are needed to reduce costs as new people receive health insurance. They will also review related collaborations with the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute. Bob Phillips became Director of the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care in 2004. He trained in medicine at the University of Florida and completed family medicine training and an MSPH in health services research at the University of Missouri. He is a Professor at Georgetown University and a Clinical Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Between 2006 and 2010 he was Vice Chair of the US Council on Graduate Medical Education and continues as a technical and policy advisor to the US Department of Health and Human Services. He was elected to the US Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science in 2010. Andrew Bazemore became Medical Director for Health Policy Research at the Robert Graham Center in 2005. He trained in medicine at the University of North Carolina, completed vocational training as a family physician at the University of Cincinnati, and an MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is an Associate Professor at both Georgetown and Virginia Commonwealth Universities. He co-directs the Health Policy Research Fellowship with Georgetown University and oversees a successful research portfolio that includes funding from federal and philanthropic sources. The Robert Graham Center aims to improve individual and population health by enhancing the delivery of primary care. The Center is a division of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and is tasked with conducting research and analysis to inform deliberations of the Academy in its public policy work and to provide a family medicine perspective to policy deliberations in Washington, D.C. This lecture is brought to you by the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute at the Australian National University. Will We Lose Our Family Home To Medicaid? As an Elder Law attorney one of my primary functions is to help families plan for how they are going to pay for long-term care. Establishing a long-term care plan for seniors is a multifaceted discussion and many times Medicaid is part of that analysis. One of the most common questions I receive when discussing Medicaid is "Will we lose our family home if my spouse (or my parent) receives Medicaid long-term care assistance". I can tell you that there is a great deal of misunderstanding by the public about which assets are protected and how much of the unprotected assets must be spent. Any discussion that deals with Medicaid and the assets an applicant owns will generally evolve around three separate components: (1) can the applicant "qualify" for Medicaid assistance; (2) is there an ability to "transfer" the home; and (3) will Medicaid be able to "recover" against the home for the cost of care provided. Medicaid Qualification There are specific financial criteria that must be met in order to qualify for Medicaid long term care assistance and every asset owned by the applicant and/or their spouse must be disclosed in the application process, even if it is owned jointly with someone else. The applicant's assets are categorized as "countable assets" or "excluded assets" and there is a limit on the amount of countable assets an applicant may have in order to qualify for Medicaid long-term care assistance. Generally, you do not have to sell your home in order to qualify for Medicaid long-term care assistance because the applicant's home can be excluded as a countable resource with certain limitations. First, to qualify for the exemption, the home must have been the applicant's primary residence. Also, for a single (non-married) applicant, the home will be excluded from the countable resources if the equity in the home does not exceed $536,000 and the applicant can demonstrate the intent to return to the home if health conditions improve and care is no longer needed. Note that it is the amount of the equity interest, not the value of the home itself. If the equity interest in the home is above the limit, the applicant will need to reduce the equity interest for the home to be excluded. If the applicant is married and the spouse occupies the home, then the home will continue to be exempt while it is actually occupied by the spouse without a limitation on the equity. Transfer of Home Transferring your home to your children (or someone else) may lead to a Medicaid penalty period, which would make you ineligible for Medicaid assistance for a period of time. However, there are circumstances in which you can transfer your home and not incur a penalty period. As an example, you can freely transfer your home to: • your spouse; • a child who is under age 20 or who is blind or disabled • into a Trust for the sole benefit of a disabled individual under age 65 • a sibling who has lived in the home during the year preceding the applicant's institutionalization and who already holds an equity interest in the home • a child of the applicant who lived in the house for at least two years prior to the applicant's institutionalization and who during that period provided care that allowed the applicant to avoid a nursing home stay However, each situation creates its own unique set of circumstances. It is important to consult an Elder Law Attorney before making any gifts or transfers. Estate Recovery Typically, dealing with the home is not an issue associated with qualifying for Medicaid. However, the home can become an issue following the death of the individual because federal law requires all states to establish an estate recovery program to seek recovery from the estate of a deceased individual for the Medicaid benefits they received. So how does estate recovery work? The Medicaid recipient becomes indebted to the state for the cost of care provided. Upon the Medicaid recipient's death, the personal representative of the recipient's estate is required to give the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services written notice of the recipient's death and give them an opportunity to file a claim in the estate to recover the debt. Planning for estate recovery becomes more complicated for married couples where only one spouse is institutionalized because one must consider the possibility that either spouse (the institutionalized/nursing home spouse or the Community Spouse) may survive the other spouse. The main focus of such planning is centered on the assets in which the nursing home spouse had a legal interest at the time of death. As we age, the need to plan for long-term care will become a reality and Medicaid assistance may be necessary at some point. I encourage you to consult with a qualified Elder Law Attorney to determine whether there is an opportunity to protect your home from estate recovery.

The idea of sustainability stands on three legs: the economy, the environment and social equity for the community. The Lake Apopka farmworker community is an example of an environmental justice community left behind in the policy and planning. It is not sustainable to address only the economy or only the environment. The Marsh Flow-Way Project and Lake Apopka Restoration Act were implemented to address the ecological issues such as the health of the lake but ignored the health and concerns of the people. Collaborations between community organizations like the Farmworkers Association of Florida and educational institutions like Florida A&M University College of Law are invaluable and can boost the strength and effectiveness of equity with regards to sustainability. HBCUs are privy to the socio-economic and environmental plights of their student populations and the communities from which they come. They understand the importance of engaging the local communities in an effort to create innovative and interdisciplinary partnerships, to identify needs, solve problems and lead by example. Sustainable practices have been an integral part of the African-American community for centuries. Leadership exhibited by people like Professor Randy Abate and students like Cameryn Justice Rivera of FAMU College of Law and community activists like Jeanie Economos of the Farmworkers Association of Florida can collectively create comprehensive and sustainable solutions.

Florida Hospital Flagler has purchased the Urgent Care facility, located adjacent to the Florida Hospital Flagler campus in Town Center, and has begun operating the facility as of Tuesday, March 9. Travelers, residents without a doctor or those unable to get an appointment with their primary care physician, as well as newcomers, now have instant access to quality physician care, said Florida Hospital Flagler Urgent Care physician, Sirpa Autio, MD. The Urgent Care treats both adults and children, accepts most insurance plans, and offers extended and after-hours, with no appointment ever needed. With an on-site laboratory and X-ray, the Urgent Care treats a variety of ailments, including colds and flus, cuts requiring stitches, sprains and strains, skin conditions, and stomach aches. In addition to providing an alternative to an emergency room for urgent, non-life-threatening medical care, the Urgent Care facility will offer Business Health Services to local businesses, including Occupational Health Services, Intervention Programs, Drug Screenings, and Workers Compensation. One of our goals as an organization is to enhance our own employee health program and create a pro-active health program that also provides compliance, said David Ottati, Florida Hospital Flagler CEO. This center will allow us to achieve this goal, and then open this initiative to local businesses. Family Practice physician Carol Grigg, MD, and former owner of the Urgent Care believes this facility will be a benefit to the community when operated by Florida Hospital Flagler. This Urgent Care facility will increase the number of patients Florida Hospital Flagler can currently care for in an emergency environment, said Dr. Grigg. The Urgent Care was efficiently designed, making it an ideal place for residents to come for emergent care. Ottati agrees. It is always a benefit to the community when the hospital and local physicians can work together to improve healthcare services available, he said. The hospital has recruited multiple primary care physicians to the community and the number of patients using our Emergency Department has grown significantly. This 4,800 square-foot Urgent Care facility will fill the current void between Primary Care and Emergency Department services. As a non-profit, faith-based hospital, Florida Hospital Flagler continues to add services as the community grows. This Urgent Care is just the latest example of our continuous commitment to develop and increase the services available to our local community.

Education reform: Is it the civil rights issue of our time, as Ted Cruz and Al Sharpton have claimed? Or are American schools not designed to succeed? In this Vision Talk, Rick Hess explains that while it might be an appealing phrase, it just doesn't fit. and suggests another way to think about the challenge. Let us know what you thought of the talk by taking this survey—we’ll send you a free e-book of our latest work on education as a thank you! http://www.thepursuitofhappiness.com/vision-talks-survey-2/ Subscribe for more Vision Talks: https://www.youtube.com/user/AEIVideos?sub_confirmation=1 Watch other videos about education: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLytTJqkSQqtrVI7pCry4ARXiYBO1tOEst Partial transcript: What I want to talk with you today about is really why school reform could feel stuck, how we got here, and how we can do better. Let me ask you a question. If I ask you to think of one thing that Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and Reverend Al Sharpton could agree upon, what would you come up with? I can think of one, right? Education is the civil rights issue of our time. It’s an appealing phrase. It’s an appealing phrase. It’s a pleasant notion. I worry, though, that it’s a distracting notion and one that just doesn’t fit. The focus on civil rights issue of our time has led us to talk about the right of students to perform adequately. This has gotten – is caught up in what we can measure, rather than what we necessarily think matters. So in No Child Left Behind, back in 2001, we wrote in the federal law that 100 percent of students would be proficient in reading and math by 2014. It’s turned out not to be the case. But along the way, we have created enormous pressure in schools to do little besides reading and math. In 2012, four out of five teachers surveyed nationally said that reading and math are crowding everything else out of their schools. You don’t have to look that hard around the country to find the elementary schools where we stopped doing much besides reading and math after January 1st. Let me ask you, how many of you, when you were 10 years old or 14 woke up in the morning and said, all right, I’m going to go to school today because I’m excited to get proficient in reading and math? You know, this is personal. For me, I was always – I always tested OK. I’m sure I was always proficient in reading and math, though we took a lot less tests back in the ’70s, but for me, the thing that made a difference was journalism. I was a mediocre student. I was probably 400th in my high school class, but I fell in love with reporting and writing on the paper and I probably spent half my senior year in that newspaper room editing the paper and working with the mentor. That’s what opened doors for me. And that’s what made school meaningful. For others, it’s the arts, it’s sports, it’s debate. Yet, too easily, when we talk about education as the new civil right, as the civil rights issue of our time, it’s easy for that stuff to fall by the wayside. Second problem is that when we talk about education as a civil rights issue of our time, we can wind up asking of schools things that they were never designed to do. You can have a right to access. It’s hard to say we have a right to a certain desirable outcome. Think about health care. We can talk about somebody having a right to see a doctor, a right to get health care, but it’s hard to say you have a right to be healthy. If I go in and see my doctor, my doctor says, Rick, you’ve got to lose about 30 pounds because you’re endangering your health. Here’s what you need to do in terms of exercise. Here’s what you should eat. And I go home and I eat a bag of potato chips every night. We generally don’t say that makes my doctor a bad doctor. There’s an understanding that there’s a mutual responsibility between doctor and patient. The same is true in education. Every child has a right to go to school. But to be educated is a mutual responsibility, a handshake between student and teacher, between school and family. And I’m afraid that it’s too easy for that to get lost when we are in the language of rights. Are American schools just not designed to succeed?

Nurse educators are challenged to develop new and innovative ways to teach students how to function in a technologically advanced healthcare environment. Through the use of low to high fidelity simulation, educators can provide and support unique learning opportunities for students that will mirror clinical situations in a controlled setting. Simulation is a learning strategy that engages the learner by allowing active participation. It is used to promote decision making and prioritization. During a low fidelity simulation, the students are provided a case scenario and are assigned a role such as the nurse, patient, family member or observer. As the students work through the case study they learn how to practice the nursing process and sharpen their decision making skills. During high fidelity simulations, students interact with a computerized mannequin that is capable of physiological responses based on the student's interventions. The student has the opportunity to practice communication, delegation, teamwork and prioritization. The simulation experience is followed by a period of reflection called debriefing. The use of video and audio recordings allow the students to observe and critic their actions and decisions during the simulation. The debriefing phase is critical to the learning process because it allows the students to find relevance and meaning in the simulation experience. The Towson University Nursing Program, integrates the use of simulation as a teaching strategy and uses low to high fidelity in different phases of the program. Experiences are increased in amount and complexity as the student progress through the curriculum. Nancy Hannafin, MSN, RN-C, is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing.
