That is a story call sesame open the door. And he create the business hopping it opens a door of opportunity for manufacturer and retail and cut out the distributors( the middle man). And he success. The door does open... More like a flood gate..
I want to get inspired by him, but I think what also helped him is the fact that China is not open to outside competition, so he faced less competition although he may not have been as skilled as silicon valley internet talents.
The KFC assholes who rejected him are still struggling to sell their fried chicken.....I wish I could see their faces. Similar to my own story. I had been rejected countless times on job interviews and many people behaved so hypocritical when they saw me. One reason, because I dont meet the skin color requirements but they won't tell you that that's the reason. Today I have learnt to become independent..
One thing should be noted is that, the people who were able to apply for a passport and travel oversea in China, during the 90's, were the elite/upper-class. So, unless you are rich, top 0.1% in university or have someone in the family is a government officials, otherwise the chance of you travelling oversea is very slim.
Yes, you get the point. Either you are wealthy or have guanxi. I still remember how hard for me to get a passport just for me to go to Hongkong in the 90's. I had to go through all sorts of paper work and have dinner with people (the guanxi thing).
80s maybe, not 90s. Especially if you were an academic working at an university. Both my parents were professors and traveled and worked abroad frequently. Since Jack Ma was teaching english it shouldnt be a surprise.
this guys is lucky because china have censored the internet meaning no google no facebook no yahoo
this guys is average compare to other big name billgates stevjob and Mark Zuckerberg
he have the homebase advantage
ジャン home-base advantage is true. But dealing with Chinese government is not a easy thing. I do not think other brilliants would be able to deal with the Chinese government. Everything has pros and cons.
Dirty tactics that kick out foreign companies and let domestic companies steal all market share and tech!!
Greedy western companies happy to exploit land and people of china. Chinese elite happy for it to happen.
1991 letting those fucking rats into the WTO wound up being a huge mistake. Fuck Bill Clinton!
