Sleeping pods in airports and elsewhere allow you to get some shut eye in public - TomoNews

1318 ratings | 263710 views
ABU DHABI — Sleeping pods placed in convenient locations allow people to get some desperately needed shut eye in public. Google may have popularized the concept of having sleeping pods in the workplace, but they're not the only company that uses them. Way back in 2012 with the London Olympics then approaching, one English company anticipated heavy traffic that would affect employees' commutes. So the company built sleeping pods that allowed employees to sleep in the office with privacy, reported Wired Magazine. These sleeping pods included a single mattress, while more advanced models also featured a stereo and a mirror. And now people can also choose to sleep with some privacy (and dignity) at airports instead of sprawling across several seats in front of gawking onlookers. Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the world to offer sleeping pods in 2013, although the service has since extended to many other airports worldwide — from Dallas-Fort Worth to London Gatwick. Abu Dhabi's GoSleep sleeping pods allow users to lie completely flat. Each pod is able to partly or fully block out sounds in the busy airport, depending on the user's preference. According to the airport's website, later stage pods offer wifi access, power sockets for charging electronic devices and space to store luggage under the cushion. The GoSleep sleeping pods can be rented out for about US $12 an hour — or about the price of three coffees. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Imagine...when people finally realize how little they actually need to be comfortable...most cities won’t let us build minimalist essential needs houses...toilet/shower/small kitchen/bed....for some reason...but the power of fad and trend is stronger and actually makes law...I foresee a day when almost anyone can afford to NOT be homeless when cities allow super tiny homes to be built, at least in some areas...
Max Noerenberg (2 months ago)
good idea but $12 per hour is a bit steep....seeing that you actually can sleep / nap on the waiting room seat for free!.....or check into a nearby hostel for the same price and you got showers and breakfast included!

In Narita Airport, you can pay for a small private room with bathroom for the same or less if you stay longer. It's such a life saver if you have longer layover. This sleep pod is pretty expensive. It would be great if you can pay for a few hours for less per hour. Like $24 for 3 hours might be worth it.

Those sleep pods look very comfortable. Perhaps they should put in some charger and/or USB ports for people to plug in their electronics so they can either use them and/or charge the stuff. The sleep pods can have pillows and blankets attached to them as well as a tray table and drink holder(s). Maybe some magazine(s), book(s), newspapers, and/or some other things for people to read if they want to do something other than sleep and/or use electronics. I hope that these ideas will be put to use at some point.

€12 an hour??? Only good if you want to sleep for an hour or two, but if your next flight is not until several hours later, you may as well sleep in a hotel - unless you're staying in very expensive cities like New York or London or Scandinavia - but otherwise it's cheaper to stay in a hotel AND you have a shower and toilet (unless it's a Scandinavian hotel!!).

I have to stay for 16 hours in Mexico City airport at night. Is big and modern and have places to charge your devices, but in winter feel like are in a freezer. Having some pods like these will be awesome. People has to sleep on the floor specially when you have a lot of luggage with you.

Lex60 (1 year ago)
When you are sleep deprived you forgot about what people can think of you.
kenicke579 (1 year ago)
tyler lewis well when you're at an airport and you have a long layover people usually sleep. Especially if you're in a different time zone. And the work one makes sense. A lot of people work late and don't have the energy to drive home so they stay at work.

Suppose there is a mechanical problem. If it's noise proof how will someone inside get assistance in getting out?😞
Quitting (1 year ago)
I was thinking maybe have an alarm and then if there's an emergency the alarm goes off and wakes them up, and an employee briefly explains what's going on and helps them out if needed.

Melissa Johnson (2 months ago)
Burns Night if I had a layover of more than 6 hours, that's exactly what I'd do. You'd be surprised what a good 3-4 hour nap in a actual bed and a quick shower does for you. I mean you definitely shouldn't go pay hundreds for a fancy hotel at the airport, but here in the states you most definitely can find a decent hotel with airport shuttle in the 70-100 range. But everyone has their taste.
