SYDNEY — An Australian aviation investigation report has revealed how an AirAsia X flight bound for Malaysia last year accidentally flew to Melbourne instead of its Asian hub after a navigational error.
The AirAsia X Airbus A330 was scheduled to fly from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur.
Australian authorities say the plane’s captain manually copied the gate coordinates displayed on a sign outside the cockpit window into the flight management guidance system. As he accidentally omitted a zero, the system located the plane near Cape Town, South Africa.
Both the captain and the first officer heard several chimes as they prepared for takeoff. They chose to ignore the alerts because there were no other abnormal indications.
Immediately after takeoff, an audible alert sounded, warning of terrain in the plane’s flightpath. Not seeing any obstacles, the pilots ignored the warning.
The plane had already deviated from its supposed departure flight path and crossed the paths of other aircraft.
An airport traffic control officer noticed the deviation and contacted the pilots. Only then did they realize the GPS error on their navigation display.
The pilots requested permission to abort the flight and return to Sydney airport, but were unable to turn back due to deteriorating weather.
The captain then accepted the alternative route to Melbourne and manually flew the plane to the new destination.
AirAsia X told CNN that all of its aircraft have since been equipped with upgraded flight management systems to avoid repeating a similar mistake.

is it these young Asian airline pilots these days not reading or listening or lack of obvious skills of simple understanding latitude & longitudes and time depatures & arrival I'm no pilot but should know at least firstly direction for starters.
JUstb hope this iwill never happen again! Didnt the First Officer double check the GPS and concur with the Captain? Both Pilots must always check and confirm with each other in flying any airlines no matter how small is the issue!!!
words are though. You're the one who adds racist connotations to the word, fucker. May I also add are you trying to compare physical violence to a word or idea of racism? If so then you aren't in touch with reality and you've yet to step outside or even begin to feel empathy with what someone who has taken physical blunts or persecution feels and experiences, both physically and emotionally. Of course that's if you've tried to liken an idea to actual physical violence.
Do Asian airline used "Made in China" satellite navigation? Kinda funny how it might have gone through,
Pilot : hello this is AirAsia xxxxx.. Speaking are we near Kulalpur?
Melbourne air traffic controllers are like WTF???
FLIGHT TAKES OFF TO MALAYSIA...AFTR TWO HOURS THE CONTROL TOWER SAYS...AIRASIA THIS IS MIAMI AIRPORT COPY THAT...AND PILOT TO THE PASSENGERS...WE HAV A SMALL DEVIATION PASSENGERS...LETS GO TO MIAMI BEACH ENJOY FOR SOMETIME AND START BACK TO MALAYSIA IN THE EVENING...HEHHEHE..
Lol this doesn’t happen commonly at all. Get your facts straight. Just because it happened in the east, doesn’t mean if we show it we are being biased. If you haven’t noticed, many mistakes that western airlines have made have gone viral, like united and american.
firstly, i sincerely apologise for my first comment.
secondly, regarding your friend dad. He might be a first officer but that doesn't mean he is in charge of the recruitment of pilots. Mas is consider to be a very big airlines so is just not one person is in charge of everything.
I myself always wanted to be a pilot. After the crashes there was a lot of pilot being redundant. Even though my dad is a dato who knew one of the pilot who is in charge of the pilot recruitment he told me that he can't promise because there is many stages to go through and many people will go through your files before you can get a job.
This is Malaysia and and I think you know how this county run and who is in charge of it.
Thank you for having this communication like adult.
and sorry if i said anything wrong to anyone out there. and also god have mercy on you if you don't get sleepy while reading my lengthy comment haha.
