Inside the Resolution Copper Mine, 1.3 Miles Underground

1182 ratings | 175268 views
Mar. 14 -- There are deeper mines in North America than the Resolution mine but none with a single shaft this long. It is a 6,943 foot concrete barrel, 30 feet in diameter bored into the mountain of Arizona and took six years to dig. Bloomberg's Matt Philips journeys toward the center of the earth to check out this engineering marvel. (video by Adam Wolffbrandt)

*I am not an expert but when they blast underneath, what stops the surface that loses support foundation from carving in?* *And $6 billion invested in this? Who pumps in $6b in a project that won't yield a single profit for the next 6-7 years? How much copper value is down there plus all expenses considered?*

Investors that have money to burn.

The idea makes no sense. You cant just magically blast rock and magic copper nuggets will just fall into nice compact funnels that will just refill themselves via gravity dropping the supposed loose copper rocks. They are going to lose their ass on this project.

In not the so distant future, there will be asteroid mining. I'm sure as human life goes on, one job that will always be there will be mining.

Haha.... The only thing that makes "cents".... Is to keep going.... It's a copper mine... I see what you did there 😂😂 But seriously, is nobody going to mention the fact that they're drilling almost a mile and a half down to get at copper that "could one day satisfy 1/4 of the US demand for copper"? Infinite growth on a finite planet is lunacy. We'll have to colonize space one day, if this attitude continues. And that's going to take lots and lots and LOTS of money to develop the means, if it's even possible. It's not even close to being practical now. And what if the means to do so doesn't turn up for another 300 years? For another 100 years?! Research will have to stop due to lack of resources (and money) looooong before the answer is found.

i wouldn't have picked up a shovel without the permits first. that should've been number uno.
Kevin R (14 days ago)
It makes sense that this man starts the job without the permits because if he didn't someone else would have, and if/when the permits clear that he is going to be stinking rich. Some politician is going to get filthy rich getting this man the permits he needs for this job to continue.

What they don't say is the surface drops into the hole all the beautiful desert is going to look like a big pit all the animals that live on the surface will be killed and jeep trails which we have been using for years will be closed off.
Dan Strayer (28 days ago)
yeah...he might also think about the 40 pounds of copper in his jeep.
Nehemiah Lowenstein (1 month ago)
blastman8888 , awe bullshit! you are overreacting and fear mongering.
kenny dukes (2 months ago)
I see where you are coming from. However at least if the ground surface collapses it should look more natural than a traditional open pit mine.

+Kyle Michaels That is beyond false. It was a bowed pipe, mis wired solenoids, and a freak accident.

Tell that to the world trade center. what happened? something crashed into it(blew up). what was still there? the support structures of the lower floors. In the end? It collapsed.
