SEATTLE — Scientists in the U.S. and in Italy are developing a revolutionary cancer therapy that would teach the body to destroy cancer cells on its own, reducing the need for debilitating chemotherapy treatments.
The new technique developed by the Cancer Research Center in Seattle, involves removing T-cells from patients, and genetically modify them by adding chimeric antigen receptors, or CARs, from genetically engineered mice. The modified T-cells are then injected back into the patient's body, and are able to target and destroy cancer cells.
The therapy is similar to a treatment given last year to British baby Layla Richards, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a disease in which the bone marrow makes too many immature lymphocytes, Sky News reported.
Richards received her treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in central London and was left cancer-free.
Recent T-cell immunotherapy trials have shown great results also in the U.S. More than 40 patients with different types of blood cancers were treated, and more than half of them were left cancer-free.
Among patients with terminal leukemia, 94 percent went into remission. Being in remission, however, still implies the cancer could eventually return.
In a second major breakthrough in Italy, researchers at the University of Milan have discovered that memory T-cells can stay in the body for at least 14 years, according to a study published on the San Raffaele Hospital website.
This means the cells could be trained to fight cancer as well as to remember the disease in case it comes back, allowing them to defeat it again. The latest discovery gives hope for the development of a vaccine-style drug that could stop cancer from coming back once it has been defeated.

Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending"
+death_to_DERP Dude we already reached overpopulation we jumped from 3 billion to 7 billion since the 60's. So ya mass genocide here we come! Anyways though this really could help a lot of people and even affect things like the colonization of the moon and Mars since we could fight the cancers heavy radiation could bring.
Never happen in a million years!! Unless A. you're rich or popular or B.you sign a waver saying it was a miricle and you dont know for the life of you how you all of a sudden got cured?? Either way I don't see Big Pharma making people better!! After all who would buy there poisons if their feeling great!! SERIOUSLY, COME ON PEOPLE!!
Oh, man, i was so sure the next breakthrough will come from one of those Quran-thumping countries !
Anyway, good news.
Now if only we could stop the cancer on the left... that took over europe and north america...
+Sral Neman not only that, we all produce cancer cells all of the time, just that diet and other external factors and encourage them to grow and develop. Also of course genetics can have a role to play in many cases
+Mr Feltcher Different schools of thought: on one side is:from the genetics point of view where this will allow the cancer coding to be passed down to generations. The other side is to let this unfortunate circumstance be passed down to future generations where babies are already born with cancer coded in them but hey, it's okay, there's expensive medicine and treatments to keep this going.
Not everyone has universal health care. You can't just be that selfish to think only for yourself, can you?
+agentnevermore my fucking god, we as humans step closer to curing cancer and people are going against it, welcome to the internet. It doe snot have to be expensive, especially when it becomes and advanced and very common medication, and anyway I hold a British passport so I can just hop back to my mainland if I get cancer and get it free on the NHS
+Mr Feltcher And the cost of treatment? we're talking generations and descendants which may equate to billions of lives with the cancer gene. Of course if you're producing the drug, you'd be more than happy with it.
