Outlander finally comes back next month for the second half of season one, and if you've been paying attention — or have read the books — you know that things are getting dark. We sat down with Tobias Menzies, who plays the man responsible for such darkness, Black Jack Randall. Menzies also plays Claire's husband, Frank, in the 1940s, but for the rest of the season, we'll only be seeing Menzies as the villain, and the actor shared both his prep for those scenes and just how uncomfortable things are going to get for the characters and the viewers.

Tobias Menzies is such a gifted, incredible actor, so mesmerizing as the brutal, villainous Black Jack, then his smooth reversal as the professorial Frank, first husband of Claire, who had such quiet grace and fortitude to love her completely against all odds.
i have to admit even at 25 years old i had to close my eyes and mute the tv during the rape scenes between Jaime and randall. it was so brutal and raw. it was hard to watch. but i do give great kudos to tobias for being able to act something like that out.
I can't believe it says Tobias plays tennis. In the book, comparing Jamie and Frank, Claire says they were both athletic, but Frank had the body of a tennis player!
Actually I generally can't believe how perfect Tobias is for both his roles.
I don't like the vocals in the intro song, it should've been sung by a Scot with folk experience perhaps Julie Fowlis or Gillebride MacMillan (who played Gwyllyn the Bard in the show) - my folkie head tells me that the lyrics shouldn't have been rewritten but they work nicely for the show. I know though that the vocals are by Raya Yarbrough who happens to be married to Bear McCreary, the main composer for Outlander! I really liked the featuring of Gillebride and Griogair in other music...just wish the main theme vocals weren't so out of place - we only have to listen to them EVERY EPISODE...
