How Grain Makes Wooden Surfboards

1860 ratings | 107749 views
In this episode of Bloomberg Pursuits' MADE series we visit a shop in York, Maine. Grain Surfboards are built through an additive process that has much in common with traditional wooden ship-building. Planks of wood are cut and glued onto an internal wood frame before being sanded down to their final shape. Video by Brian Schildhorn, David Nicholson ---------- Like this video? So odd that this video comes up today when I just finished sanding out a mini Grain twin fish model (similar to the little board being held by the mannequin hand in the beginning of the video). I got it as a gift two years ago and FINALLY got around to making it today. Very weird

Absolutely beautiful boards.🤙

Very nice! I bet there's a lot of satisfaction in making one of those then going out and surfing on it. The commentator below has a point though. The CNC machine doesn't really qualify as hand made.

I like how you use wood but still keep it high tech like the wing of an aeroplane, have you thought of making an electric hydrofoil version.

Love the video direction!

Awesome and what a beautiful board, but that’s a generous use of the word “sustainable “ . We have synthetic glues , fiberglass cloth and epoxy.
pen mightygun (1 month ago)
and what wasnt sustainable ? the beach sand ? sorry earth makes it , oil sorry its made out of calcium carbonate , planets without life have oil science says its not really a fossil fuel , thats coal. so we are done right?

This is beautiful work. The CNC machine is just another tool in the shop and in the hands of a master great things happens when all tools are used properly

“Built 100% by hand”... Then proceeds to start the CNC Router.
Sattva Woodworks (7 days ago)
The CNC is only used for the frame. The bulk of the board is hand made. The Grain crew are very nice, sincere and dedicated craftspeople. The frame can be cut with a jigsaw also, but even a poly based shaper starts with a block of foam.
pen mightygun (1 month ago)
OMG you came up with the same 500 dollar amount i did in labor.
pen mightygun (1 month ago)
polyester resin is hot coated flash cured , epoxy resin cross links with time , an oven would shorten the chemistry time allowing earlier shipping times
Mike West (1 month ago)
The templates are the most critical part, cnc is a major time saver. Without cnc you could add another $500 easy to these boards .
Robert Vander Voort (1 month ago)
Paralytic, there is clearly a lot of handwork involved. To create those frame cutouts by hand would be beyond slow and clunky. That is such an obvious application.
Jesse C (6 months ago)
So it’s basically a wooden tooth pick for the sharks
Luke Hagi (1 month ago)
i don't think there has been a single incident where the shark actually eats the whole board anyway
pen mightygun (1 month ago)
yes but the styrofoam and glass ones work just as well in a shark attack
Luke Hagi (2 months ago)
Jesse C when I hear stuff like this I know immediately you have never gone surf and most likely know very little little about the ocean
