Men Might Have To Get Wives' Permission For Viagra

2022 ratings | 87462 views
A Kentucky lawmaker wants to enact a law that would greatly restrict men’s access to Viagra. She’s doing this to make a point about women’s reproductive rights. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian hosts of The Young Turks discuss. Do you support Rep. Mary Lou Marzian’s efforts? Let us know in the comments below. Read more here: http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2016/2/15/ky-bill-would-require-men-seeking-viagra-to-get-note-from-wives.html “The bill is sponsored by Rep. Mary Lou Marzian, a Kentucky Democrat who is a nurse. She told the Courier-Journal newspaper that the legislation is aimed at protecting the health of Kentucky’s men. She wants to make sure they understand the potentially dangerous side effects of erectile dysfunction drugs. The bill also would require that doctors “prescribe a drug for erectile dysfunction only to a man who is currently married” and “require a man to make a sworn statement with his hand on a Bible that he will only use a prescription for a drug for erectile dysfunction when having sexual relations with his current spouse.” Marzian said she also plans to file a bill requiring potential gun buyers to obtain counseling 24 hours in advance from victims of gun violence before the purchase.” *** Download audio and video of the full two hour show on-demand + the members-only post game show by becoming a member at http://www.tytnetwork.com/join/. I wouldn't have a problem talking with victims of gun violence before being able to buy a gun because 1: I would ask they victim if he or she had a gun themselves when they were victimized. (Mostly likely they would all answer with a NO) and 2 That would give me and even more people all the more reason to buy ourselves a gun. So actually the gun bill this democrat is trying to propose is a FANTASTIC idea !
Wats Doug (2 years ago)
The real reason guys need viagra is because they have been with the same boring vigina for to many years, so there spouse forces then to take viagra. It's that or divorce court.

No that was incredibly immature and irresponsible of her. That legislation should have never been presented and it doesn't parallel completely. That woman's an assholes, you don't fire with an even bigger fire. I am pro-choice but that doesn't mean I'm for this nonsense she pulled. Make your point without doing harm.

It's so weird how in a country where we're supposed to separate religion from government, so many politicians want to make everyone obey their Christian belief system. As a Christian man, I don't want Christian laws to govern government--that would be absurd. My personal beliefs differ even from other Christians, and so many beliefs should not be imposed on others. I have no right to force other by law to act in a way that's according to my religious views... because they may not share my views, and my religious views should ONLY be private. I don't care what you believe; believe that in peace. Don't force others to follow your views... This is nuts.

You can take your Bible and put it where the sun never shines... Effing sheeps. If those people put half the hours they spend on religion into informing themselves properly we wouldn't be where we are.
Hate Love (2 years ago)
Can someone help me understand something. Now i understand in America you have to freedom to practice whatever religion you choose. However if a law is based around ones religion and the other party does not partake in that religion does that law still apply to them? Could a women simply say i'm not a christian and gain access to abortion? If not what is holding down this law to make everyone else obey even if it it's a law based around a particular religious belief?
Hate Love (2 years ago)
+Kings Peanutbutter Ah thanks perfect clarification so they can not ban abortion just because it's against religious beliefs. So how did they get away with making gay marriage illegal if the sole purpose was it being against a religious belief?
asaenvolk (2 years ago)
+Chaka Mad Yes, your right in that religion does form some of the justification, at least in the minds of the people writing the laws and those and some of those voting for them. You are right that we do have a clause where the church can not support a state religion. Sadly however just because a law is inspired by a religion you can not just ignore it, though people have challenged, and won court battles against such laws. So no, just because you are not a christian you can not get out of the hurdles that they have set up to try and stop an abortion, on the other hand just because you are not a feminist you can't get out of say some of the female quota's they have set up.

+stormweaver82 no sperm are not considered new life.  yes in the scenario of saving a mothers life abortion should be allowed. im a scientist. i need few words.
stormweaver82 (2 years ago)
+pingpong wigwom I suppose you are a scientist because scientist don't always know how some words can lead to a slippery slope. Arn't sperm considered new life? And I assume you mean a new life form since each sperm contains a new set variation of the one they come from. Also if your a scientist you must know about the problem of viability. If you take a child out suddenly for a long while it will die very swiftly unable to live without the mother so you get into issues that the mother and the new life are attached to the hip, so to speak much like when a doctor faces a horrible choice of taking the life of a set of connected twins literally joined at the hip because if the weaker one dies, the rot will kill the other as well.
pingpong wigwom (2 years ago)
+stormweaver82 no im talking about a new life. im a scientist so i speak specifically from a science perspective. sperm is the same as  a period. we dont arrest women for having a period and we shouldnt arrest men for ejaculating.

Ozy Mandias (2 years ago)
The circumstances aren't synonymous, if we are legally mandating men to pay for children that they unwillingly father, it should follow that men have some input in whether or not children they are responsible for conceiving are aborted. A similar situation would be if a drug that increased female virility required their husband's input. I agree though that there should be less restrictions on abortions (a reproduction in general), I just also think it's WAY past due that financial abortions (in VERY early stages) were instituted. People speak as though the government's intrusions on women's reproductive health were sexually discriminatory, while the sheer lack of provisions for men leaves them never having even considered that men OUGHT have any provisions in the first place. It's baffling really. Men have so little say in reproduction that this law maker had to turn to Viagra for what would become a dubious comparison. Does that really seem just people?
pingpong wigwom (2 years ago)
+Tyrese Gibson you got served
Ozy Mandias (2 years ago)
+Tyrese Gibson "your making connections that dont work like that" I don't know if you are anti-science or anti-evidence, but I think you should take a second look at that comment. I DIDN'T MAKE ANY CONNECTIONS, the women who were a part of the study did. I didn't make up a claim about why women have abortions, YOU DID THAT. What I did was read a study that recounts what WOMEN THEMSELVES SAY ABOUT WHY THEY HAVE ABORTIONS. You are the one making connections that don't exist. I am quoting science and evidence. Don't interpret the bold to be yelling or anger. I typed it that way deliberately to show emphasis. I just wish you would approach this problem logically.
Ozy Mandias (2 years ago)
+Tyrese Gibson So you are saying that women should be allowed to opt out of pregnancy because of pregnancies due to rape? If that is the case, then the only circumstance under which you think a woman should be allowed to get an abortion is if she is raped? You hold a double standard, what you are currently experiencing is called cognitive dissonance in which an idea you would like to hold doesn't make sense any longer when you subject it to scrutiny; that scrutiny is me challenging you to substantiate your argument. If you want to make the argument that women should be allowed to have abortions but men should not be allowed to instate financial abortions because of conditions that are unique to women, then NAME those conditions specifically please. In the case of rape, men can be raped by women as well. It seems pretty clear to me that a man should be allowed to instate a financial abortion against a woman who rapes him and becomes pregnant as a result (if not arguably, suing her to have her pregnancy terminated), so this isn't a circumstance that gives a logical reason for why women should be allowed to have abortions but men shouldn't, it's actually a *wonderful* case for why BOTH practices should be legal.
Tyrese Gibson (2 years ago)
+Fidelis Espiritu your making connections that dont work like that, many women are raped, theres many diffrences between women and men, therefore situations are diffrent and only effect one sex sometimes. like rape for instance it is women who are the majority of rape victims, and thats even higher when only considering adults. you cant realistically make that assumptions realistically, i get your point but it's a bad point that dosent make sence really.

It doesn't go far enough. 1 - Make sure there's a 72 hour waiting period after the first consultation. 2 - Ensure they have some sort of medical test to make sure they can't get an erection without Viagra. 3 - Make the doctor misinform the patient with all kinds of myths related to erections. Finally, 4 - make sure there's only one clinic in the state that can dispense Viagra, and ensure it's in the most remote place possible.

+Maggie Flynn Men are forced to be responsible for a child he never agreed to. They will become enslaved for 18 years against their will. Also, men do care about birth control because they will be liable for child support for 18 years and have their life ruined.
Maggie Flynn-Fleet (2 years ago)
Jeff, I'm so disappointed.  You could have come up with a much better description than moron.  How about, fool, idiot, ass, blockhead, dunce, dolt, ignoramus, imbecile, cretin, dullard, simpleton, clod? Or do some of those words have too many syllables for you?  Definition of reproductive rights from the WHO:  "Reproductive rights rest on the recognition of the basic right of all couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have the information and means to do so, and the right to attain the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health. They also include the right of all to make decisions concerning reproduction free of discrimination, coercion and violence."  So, you say men have no reproductive rights?  They don't have the right to procreate whenever they want? They have the goverment deciding when they're going to be forced to have children? They're denied birth control ?  Oh right, men don't give a shit about birth control because men don't get pregnant.
John (2 years ago)
+Maggie Flynn Men actually currently have no reproductive rights. So you're a moron.

ClingyKiwi (2 years ago)
agh. I want to like this, I find it funny. the idea of saying hah shove it in your face first hand feel it.... but two wrongs don't make a right. protest legislation or real, it still proves nothing. It just pisses people off. And what if it happened to pass because enough people were like "hah, shove it in your face." then poor old Fiesty liberal men who just wanna get freaky with some granny women who makes choices about their own bodies suffer, ya? either way. I think this is hilarious to people who understand it, but I don't think it will make anyone else understand it. it also takes out the core part of pro-life people who true-life believe that abortion is actually murder. you cannot appeal to people who believe that by taking away boners. meh. funny, but not well thought out I think

+BlueAllegory *I think that is a terrible and bigoted comment. Many women considering abortion end up raising functioning, contributing members of society. The abortion-crime correlation is a farce. The baby boom generation aged out of the high crime cohort (early 1990s) at the time when generation killed off by the first legalized abortions (early 1970's) would have come of age.*
BlueAllegory (2 years ago)
+Gregory Malchuk There actually is a social interest in abortion. It's preventing babies from being born to mothers who do not want them. If the mother doesn't want the child, she'll abuse or neglect it, the kid will grow up poor and psychologically damaged, and end up a criminal. After abortion was legalized, the crime rate when down. Abortion is a necessary crime control method.

Artharas (2 years ago)
Now I'm pro-choice, but I think this a terrible comparison. I can understand that some people think life begins when the egg and sperm meet, and so logically it's a murder to stop the fertilized egg from going full term. I think with the same logic, men commit mass murder frequently and women commit murder once per month, so obviously I don't agree with it, but I can atleast see that POV. I think there's no logic where a man would ever have to get wife's permission for viagra, it's not comparable in the least, I understand ofcourse this isn't a real bill, but even so it's a stupid stunt.
Rainshi (2 years ago)
+Artharas I think the dem. was trying to point out that in some states a woman needs the father's permission to abort. don't know which state but that's what I heard. so she's sort of doing a flip saying well you want the blue pill you need to get your wife's permission.
Artharas (2 years ago)
+Damian Chapman Can't really say that I do no. I'm not really seeing the connection between the monogamous part and the possibility that a man would use viagra, since he could and probably would be using it with his monogamous partner. If your argument is that he could be using it to commit infidelity, then you could also argue that a person couldn't order food, or go to a restaurant(etc etc) without the partner's permission, because those could also be a part of said infidelity. The list would basically be endless of things you'd need your spouse's permission. However murder is illegal, and pro-lifers think of abortion as murder. So while I think they are wrong, I think it's quite logical that they do fight it tooth and nail. Basically, unless people in monogamous marriage think infidelity should be illegal and punishable to the highest order, I don't think these 2 things are anywhere near to being comparable.
Damian Chapman (2 years ago)
+Artharas Your premise is based on your understanding that some people believe "life begins at conception". If you are able to understand that opinion, can you understand that some hold the opinion that marriage is a monogamous institution for life? It is a bill designed to get people to question, so please do.

TYT supports the proposition of laws which are openly based in bullshittery. Let that sink the fuck in for a second.
Si Ian Tan (2 years ago)
+Croter8ment TYT's "support" is for the reason these bills were put forward, which are nicely summed up by Ted Culbertson. Not for the actual bill or law itself. One can always agree with another's ideals or goals without supporting their actions. With regards to laws openly based in bullshittery, the US already has more than it's fair share. A simple example is the legalisation of same sex marriage. Federal already says its fine, yet some states refuse to change their laws, and a few states even add more laws against the LGBT community which will not be upheld if contested. So....
Ted Culbertson (2 years ago)
+Croter8ment First of all, this woman knows better than anyone that this bill could never be passed, so there's no risk of it actually becoming law. Secondly, this was probably the best way she could have made her point. She can bring it up in debate, but I doubt even the other state representatives listen to that. Now proposing it as a bill, people are going to see that.

+TeamSugoiFrog    Don't worry, less mad than I sound.    Sadly there are a few cases of young men having to pay child support to their rapist.  After all the "child's needs" out strip his rights.
TeamSugoiFrog (2 years ago)
Hopefully that woman goes to jail, just like any other rapist? Not that its easy to get them to jail... But i'd be all in favor for a female rapist to lose custody of their child, just as a male one should.
James Dean (2 years ago)
+TeamSugoiFrog And what about the young boy who has to relive his trauma because an older woman forced herself onto him and has to essentially pay her for raping him

+asaenvolk sorry took me so long to respond, but if that's what you're passionate about then ok
asaenvolk (2 years ago)
+King Lyulf    Its okay, I read this stuff a lot.  I have read the feminist literature, and I have looked at the research, I am very involved.  That said, I do not expect every one else is.
Dapper Wolf (2 years ago)
+asaenvolk well personally you would know better than I because I don't understand you know any of this besides what I either read or heard on the news so sorry that I can't be anymore knowledgeable about this.
asaenvolk (2 years ago)
+King Lyulf No, women are just not treated the exact same in the U.S. as men.  But in many ways men are treated as second class citizens, I can list a whole plethora of ways if you want.  Now do women have some problems, sure, they do, but some of the problems we think of as women have some times when you crunch the numbers actually affect more, people just do not care when it happens to men.

Great job!! Always said; Republican Politicians are so oxy moron... they say they are so pro life and every life is valuable. But they fight to keep the 2nd amendment knowing guns are used to kill innocent people everyday there not only used for protection...Then they turn around and fight that a women has no right to the privacy of her own body and shouldn't have the right to an abortion cause they are pro life... Yup hold your bible up high on those theory's cause there both condescending!
Professor Emma Wray (2 years ago)
+Katz B there is more gun crime in "gun free zones" than in areas with less gun restrictions. Gun crime fell over a 20 year period when gun ownership doubled. Guns save lives.

AIWARAS619 (2 years ago)
I am kind of loving this. She is trying to use irony as a weapon against republicans, but it would be super hilarious if republicans would help to actually pass the bill and permanently kill her career.

This is so clever. I hope TYT keep track of the 'discussions' this will create in Kentucky's senate :D

*_Pro tip:_* Watch the entire video before you post a comment. It will¹ prevent you from saying inapplicably stupid things like: "more useless government control from Democrats," +Gaston Boucher "to say I need my wife(sic) consent to understand the risks more is a slap in the face and says men aren't adult enough to make up their own decisions." +gutz1981 "Bullshit with that logic women need notes from there(sic) husbands to get abortions" +Aiden Angelo "This is clearly about women trying to control men." +DeathDoomDarkness Etc. Etc... 1. only applies if you're not already a complete idiot/troll

The way this comment is framed reminds me of this great review I read on goodreads about Macbeth. Both showcase some terrible denizens of the interwebs, and both are very funny to me.
eyeammi (2 years ago)
+Florence MacKenna I'm pretty sure most of the more vitriolic commenters didn't make it past the title before they started pawing at the keyboard.
Florence MacKenna (2 years ago)
+eyeammi Hell, you don't even need to watch it all the way through. Just glance at the description.
JosephJamesScott (2 years ago)
I knew what this was about the moment I saw the title. These religious right wing guys wouldn't dare think to tell other men what they can do with their bodies and so I knew it had to have been a law proposed by someone looking to make a point.
Apophis (2 years ago)
I'm glad those bible thumping hypocrites are getting a taste of their own medicine.
kevin kelly (2 years ago)
Using irony on republicans wont work. See the comment section for proof. This just goes over their heads. The lady has misoverestimated her audience.
김미나 (2 years ago)
I don't think she actually is trying to get this law passed. I think it's just something she proposed to get a point across. No way this would actually pass, anyway. It's just to make a statement. I personally think this is a very clever way to get people with opposing views to see what kinds of things they're proposing by proposing similar restrictions on things they claim should be rights.
asaenvolk (2 years ago)
+Jeff D that is Soooo true.
John (2 years ago)
+Savannah Smith Her "point" is stupid because men already know what it's like having no reproductive rights.
asaenvolk (2 years ago)
+Savannah Smith Hmm, interesting, perhaps we should then pass a law preventing gender study degrees, that seams like a wonderfully ironic way to trying to get them to stop teaching hate. Duh, that's a bad idea, as is this. It doesn't do what it pertains to do, it doesn't understand why those who are pro-life do it, and it shows she isn't trying to understand ether, just that she is vindictive. Btw, I am pro-choice.
billybob jenkins (2 years ago)
Wait she was being ironic? Its a dumb idea either way.
billybob jenkins (2 years ago)
+bigge525 wow wow wow.. I think there has been a misunderstanding here. I agree with you. Its dumb to have laws like that for women and its dumb to have laws like that for men.I appreciate the irony that the politician was trying to get across but I think that that specific idea would be a dumb law if hypothetically it were to come to pass.
bgt125 (2 years ago)
+billybob jenkins I will pretty much guarantee there are no laws in your society that prevent men like you from deciding with only their doctor and not any politicians what is best for their body and their health care. Understand why it is NOTHING BUT HYPOCRISY to have laws in place that only do that to women now? ;)
billybob jenkins (2 years ago)
+bigge525 Nope I cant. I don't live in the USA so I don't know many laws.
bgt125 (2 years ago)
+billybob jenkins So you can provide an example of EVEN ONE STATE/FEDERAL LAW that puts a legislator between you (as a man) and your doctor since people like you don't just single out women, right? I'll hold my breath. LOL LOL LOL
billybob jenkins (2 years ago)
+bigge525 It should depend for both. Dumb laws are introduced all the time.
Muaahaa (2 years ago)
While her idea is clever, will it actually improve the legal situation for women in regards to their bodies? Or will this just promote bickering and metaphorical, unnecessary laws. The whole thing seems very childish. Maybe that is what the situation calls for, but maybe not...

adioqier (2 years ago)
The pro-abortion propaganda on TYT is really sickening. It's murder and trying to justify it as a freedom of choice or women's right issue is so disgusting. I say that as a liberal.
Jesus wept. (2 years ago)
+adioqier You made a reasonable statement on a video by the left-wing version of Fox News. This is the same channel that constantly pushes anti-white, anti-male, anti-heterosexual, anti-christian, anti-police messages to its brain dead lapdog audience. They have about as much credibility as Alex Jones.
Retalak (2 years ago)
+adioqier I hope you understand abortion is only allowed before it's a living fetus. It's only allowed when it's a clump of cells that would die outside the womb. (Or in special cases where the baby has problems). It's not murder to bite the inside of your cheeks just as it's not murder to take some cells that haven't formed a baby yet out of a woman's uterus.
adioqier (2 years ago)
Didn't know tissues were capable of conception. Maybe think before you completely disregard a human life moron.
Keety (2 years ago)
+adioqier I agree, I also think jerking off into a tissue is murder as well.

im a liberal. i am for women's choice. but i dont see anything wrong with a counseling session that lists out the pros and cons of an abortion.
Deus Dex (2 years ago)
+Stefan Teichmann   There is nothing necessary about forcing a woman to undergo a psychological evaluation in order to have a medical procedure she has every right to have. You fail to grasp that you have no right to curtail the rights of citizens for no practical reason. Please do not have a nice day.
Stefan Teichmann (2 years ago)
+COSH666  My IQ is besides the point, given that you fail to grasp the concept of medicaly neccessary psychological evaluation and help it isn't even the one in question. Have a nice day.
Deus Dex (2 years ago)
+Stefan Teichmann  Counseling is not informative, that is what a doctor's consultation is for. Counseling is redundant. Why does a woman need to have counseling when she has already been informed of the risks by an actual doctor? Your secular counseling is no better and no more necessary than religious counseling and cares no more for the rights of an individual than religious counseling does. It's just a different form of authoritarianism. All your stupid counseling achieves is forcing women to do things they don't want to for no medical reason and preventing them from exercising their rights if they refuse. You obviously think you're smart... you really aren't.
Stefan Teichmann (2 years ago)
+COSH666  Let's do one last try and with Math this time round. A surgeon earns money when fixing people, a shrink when talking to theml. If you ask your surgeon to please tell you about the emotional trauma this or that might cause he will send in the shrink or send you to see one. Does that make sense? It should... For many many operations we send you to se a shrink before sometimes even after. I told you about donating organs a few times now. That is completely normal. Yes you can donate a kidney to you momy or daddy if you want to, but we will ask you to see a shrink and he has to allow it (though that part is not true in all countries)... Did that sink in, a shrink can say no to you donating a kidney if he or she feels that there is something wrong... All i would like to be sure that women are not pressured into abortion, so sue me, i would like to make sure that they don't suffer any mental trauma from going or not going through with it, so sue me, i would like fewer doctors to be sued for things patients find out after the fact because "sign here" is all the surgeon said,..
Deus Dex (2 years ago)
+Stefan Teichmann   All you did was ignore every question I ask you and avoid my main point that a counseling session is not the same as a doctor's consultation which they already have before an abortion. I didn't need to put words into your mouth, you literally advocate forcing women to undergo counseling and would take their rights away if they refuse. Your hypocrisy of accusing me of the same thing you've done this entire conversation is astonishing.
