This fight is often regarded as one of the greatest boxing matches of the XX th century, it was held in tropical conditions, during the rain and high humidity period. The duel ended in 8th round with the victory of Mohammed Ali.
Number 2. Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler - April 6th, 1987 the two very promising fighters met inside the ring. This was the 12th defense for Hegler, Ray Leonard wasn’t seen inside the ring for three years and took only one fight in the last 5 years. All tickets were sold out in 16 days. Of the 21 boxing reviewers, 18 said that victory would be for Hegler and only three supported Leonard.

The Nigel Bern fight?? LOL How did that rate? I can agree with the rope-a-dope Ali/Foreman fight and the Leonard ripoff fight, but how is there not the Thrilla in Manila, or the Fight of The Century - both with Ali? How about the Buster Douglas knockout of Tyson (his first)? Maybe the "Down goes Frayzha? fight with Foreman? Hearns-Hagler? ...and that's just the 60s - 90s. My point here is - there are about 100 more memorial, meaningful fights than .. Nigel Bern? Who even is that? lol
I wonder what hagler v leonard would have been like if leonard wasnt out for so long
As for this fight when leonard hit marv it was harder to spot, slightly quicker but often within a flurry, plus the fact that marvins head never moves when he gets hit
(1)Tyson-Douglas (proof that no win is guaranteed in boxing)(2) Ali-Frazier II "Thrilla in Manilla"--Savage, brutal fight in which both fighters almost lost their life.(3) Hagler-Hearns--A shorter version of the Thriller in Manila. Hagler coming back from almost defeat to a sudden KO. Honorable mentions--(1)Gatti Ward---exciting fight with no defense, all offense for the whole fight. (2)Leonard-Hearns I--slugger outboxes boxer for most of the fight, then boxer outslugs slugger--proof that the greatest boxers can adapt.(3) Taylor-Chavez--Taylor winning the fight but loses by one second in the last round. (imo-the fight should not have been stopped--Chavez did not have time to hit him once more so Taylor was in no more danger) but the controversy made it memorable.
Boxing in that era was the best . Many fighters who made the Olympics would turn pro and many who did not but tried still got some notoriety, and fought with vengeance. Today it's more about the circus surrounding the fight , to bad because when two evenly matched warriors get in the ring , you cannot beat that excitement
Why is that last fight even on here? Looks fixed the way dude kneels out at the end. You put these 2 bums in the same category as Leonard, Hagler, Foreman and Ali? Ridiculous. That's the sloppiest bullshit I've ever seen in a boxing ring aside from Butter Beans fights. That's not a boxing match. It looks like an 8th grade locker room fight.
Leonard demanded too much, 12 rounds a bigger ring, It was very close and credit to Leonard ,but I thought Marvin dominated the fight, Leonard didn't hurt or even looked like he was gonna KO Marvin. I wonder why Leonard never gave a rematch? the only rematch he gave was when he lost to Duran. Had Hearns beat him in 1981 he would have granted a rematch in 6 months ,i know they fought again but it was 8 yrs later and Tommy was robbed .
Joe Fraser Hagler and sugar ray Leonard holy field are the greatest boxers in history of boxing my opinion WHY BECAUSE THET CAN TAKE PUNCHES AND KEEP COMING IN THEY DON'T GRAB/HOLD ONTO THEY OPPONENT WHEN GETTING HIT
These boxing 'experts' seem to have forgotten their boxing history. Ali was asked who was the greatest fighter of all time? His answer; Sugar Ray Robinson, [208-179 with 108 knockouts] hell, fighters from the seventies on don't even have the number of fights Robinson had knockouts. Check the people Robinson fought, they would have beaten Leonard, Hagler , or any of the modern fighters. Check out Robinson v Fullmer II! Fullmer was 11 years younger, had never been off his feet in his whole career and had beaten everyone he came against including Robinson. They fought six weeks after Fullmer took the title from Robinson, not two, three years like now days. Jake LaMotte would have killed Leonard, Hagler, Herns, etc. yet Robinson fought him 6 times and beat him 5 of the six.
Look at Willy Pep, Joe Lewis, Sandy Sandler, Henry Armstrong, Harry Greb, fighters from the seventies on could not cope with these guys. People need to learn their boxing history before calling some of these modern fighters the greatest.
Hagler was by far the bigger man as Leonard moved up 2 weight classes to fight Hagler. Hagler did have a tough time trying to deal with Leonards speed and footwork and Hagler was by far the stronger man. Leonard landed by far more cleaner power punches than Hagler.
For my money, George is the meanest, scariest fighter to grace a boxing ring ever. He had power that to this day is still just unfathomable and he was in an almighty era and he stood so tall!
Unfortunately for him, he came across the one person who didn't know how to be scared of anyone and the person who had the best attributes to beat pure power.
and the boxing brain that knew when to put them together. (Not forgetting that ridiculously legendary chin of his).
Leonard and Hagler, both are truly all time greats..... but Hagler won that fight!!!
Watching the Benn vs McClellan fight live I always remember saying that the ref should have stopped the fight early in favour of Gerald, but he didn't and I think that Nigel Benn (not to discount Geralds efforts) put on the bravest most warrior like fight that I've ever seen. Gerald was the harder hitter of the two and Benn was a knockout artist himself, but what happened that night was incredible and amazing and also very very sad. I knew something was wrong the moment that Gerald went on that knee blinking.
Amazing fights and amazing fighters.
Please lose the computer commentary.
There is no doubt that Hagler gave it 110%, but again, he simply gave it away in the first 4 rounds. Leonard was an incredibly smart fighter. Don't get me wrong, I think Marvin was a great fighter, just not great enough on this night.
Im not speaking out of turn. Most experts agree that Hagler basically threw the first 4 rounds away trying to fight handed. He did not do enough in the last 8 to overcome that. He chased Leonard because he had to in order to have a chance to win after the early round loses. It worked against Tommy Hearns but didn't against Leonard. But.... to the credit to all who believe that Hagler won, boxing is the easiest sport to get a bad outcome when it goes to the cards. Personally, I wish it had been declared a draw and had a rematch. Experts opinins.... Leonard won by 1 point after scoring the fight over and over.
Having seen all 3 of those fights I can definitely say what a great choice, will never forget Nigel Ben's body language after the first round, having been smashed to pieces in first round he walked back with the look of I AM going to win this, because if I can survive that I can survive anything, unfortunately McLennan ended up with brain damage.
The Hagler-Leonard fight decision was the reason for the Oscar D.- Tito fight decision. They awarded Tito the win because he chased Oscar all night. They didn't make same mistake as Leonard-Hagler.... Another thing that shtye Leonard was throwing didn't hurt Hagler..
Dundee’s fighters were jokes. The only thing Ali was the “greatest” at was mentally screwing his opponents. As with Leonard, there was never any power in any of his punches; that may be okay with a fly-weight, but it doesn’t work between the middle and heavy weights.
Frazier was assassinated by Foreman in both fights. Ali barely survived 2 of the fights with Frazier, and lost the third badly. Ali was only able to beat Foreman mentally. That’s how bitches fight because they can’t fight like men.
The only reason anyone refers to Ali as the “greatest” has to do with what people consider to be his social achievements. He would not have beaten Joe Lewis, Lenox Lewis or even Marciano. And in a million years Ali was nowhere near the same league as Sugar Ray Robinson.
The judges in most of Leonard’s were bought and paid for. Watch them; there is no other explanation. Two of the Hearns fights and the Hagler fight were the worst. The Hagler fight ended with Leonard literally collapsing to the canvas, and Hagler looking like he was going into the 6th round. And in any title fight, unless you knock out the belt holder, you lose. But they gave it to Leonard anyway. He must have been backed by the mob.
Hagler vs. Leonard sucked! Leonard ran all night and threw patty cake punches! Hagler was a half-step slow chasing Leonard around the ring and looked old, but Leonard did not do enough to beat him! Leonard got away with robbery!
Did you know before that fight Leonard got friendly with Hagler and Hagler let it slip that he hadn't got boxing in his heart anymore and probably wouldn't fight again, what did Leonard do, started calling him out for the fight. Absolutely disgusting display of non sportsmanship. You can call it tactical all you want but I don't buy that bullshit.
