TENERIFE, SPAIN — Morgan the orca whale has endured a rough few years after being rescued from the waters near the Netherlands back in 2010. A video released this week shows the young whale beaching herself, leading many to believe she was attempting to commit suicide.
Found severely emaciated and dying in 2010, a local theme park known as Dolfinarium Harderwijk was able to acquire a “rescue, rehabilitate and release” permit from the Dutch government that would allow her to be taken in.
After months of rehab, Morgan was brought back to full health. Rather than send her back to the wild as promised though, she was taught tricks and kept in small tanks over the course of 18 months.
Eventually she was sent over to another theme park in Spain called Loro Parque, which happens to be owned by SeaWorld. Activist organizations have reported that since she’s been there, Morgan’s been forced to perform for the public, and is constantly subjected to sexual pressure by male orca whales, even though she’s believed to be very young.
The video, which was recorded on May 16 and released by Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project, shows Morgan beaching herself on a concrete ledge after a performance in the Canary Islands. According to witnesses, she waited there for more than ten minutes. While many are speculating the act was a suicide attempt, other experts are not so sure, saying she may have instead been trying to escape from other orcas bullying her.
A video, released earlier this year, shows Morgan banging her head against the gates of a medical pool she was in. Dolphin Project claims she was trying to escape the pool, as she was being held in with another male whale. Loro Parque says those claims are exaggerated, and that Morgan was instead releasing pent up sexual energy.
Morgan was the first wild orca brought into captivity in roughly 25 years, which makes her invaluable to captive breeding programs.
In March of this year, SeaWorld announced the end to captive breeding at their U.S. parks, but the same agreement is not in place for its international parks.
Organizations like Dolphin Project and the Free Morgan Foundation continue to work against Morgan’s captors, so that one day, she may once again swim free.

Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending"
#SEAWORLD you should have released her!! Very sad this is why no one trust you!! Totally disgraceful!! She is depressed! Why do you refuse to do what is right by the whale and others in Captivity?? LET HER GO!! LET Lolita Go!!
I went to sea world with my friend’s family last summer because her little sister wanted me to go and she just turned 2 so I couldn’t say no. When we went, they started one of their shows and we watched and I couldn’t help but feel empathy for those poor things. You could just see in their eyes how sad they were :(
Jack Your right. Orcas take care of their own. In a book I just finished a whale got cut by a boat in three places. She swims slow. She has a babysitter that helps her and pushes her if they need to go faster. So if this whale is deaf which I doubt wasor is the pod would take care of her. Deaf or not she is smart enough to beach herself and be unhappy. Seaworld probably made her deaf to keep her. But she can do tricks. She won’t live long I bet .
Michelle Stigt that is not true. loco parque only led on to believe she was deaf, right before they got her pregnant and before her estimated release as a trick to keep her longer. EVEN if she is deaf, she wasnt when she was “rescued”. EVEN if she is dead there are findings that shows orcas help eachother out in the wild within their pods because theyre highly intelligent animals. EVEN if her pod wouldnt accept her, death in the ocean would still be more humane then the horror conditions of loco parque
You should know that she is deaf and they couldnt find her family. Because of her young age, she couldnt go back in the wild. This sollution isnt the best one, I know... But what did they have to do then?
there are freeing programs that use seapens to let her acclomatise to the sea and sounds. if they put that pen around her pod, she might interact with her fmaily. if her observes see that she is doing well, she can be eventually released
He says rescued from the waters NOOOOOOO she was ripped from her pod and taught ticks and stayed in small tanks and was shipped all over she needs to be given to a sanctuary and stop doing these mindless tricks especially since she's so smart all these orcas are yet they are doing tricks for what FOR OUR ENTERTAINMENT god people need to look around for once!!!!!
Compare this young orca like a young human girl, you separate her from her mother, keep her in a cage with sexually driven men, who constantly bully and take her, at this point which girl wouldn't want to die
She did not beach herself, she was forced to do a trick, and once she did, a orca went up to her and pushed her, making her slide away from the simple edge, and she flipped out while people were watching, and TWO WORKERS were sitting there just walking around her, and left her to technically die.
They kept her in captivity because she has hearing problems and she need echolocation in order to get food! So all those foundations can you please stop because all your work are no good and you guys don't understand the treatment they get every... single... day!!!
Funny how no one notices that millions of other animals are being held in the same conditions or worse waiting to be slaughtered for food. But hey i mean not going to seaworld is easy enough, changing your eating habits is where it stops.
if they knew they were bullying her and harassing her and putting her in small tanks of water why did none of the workers did shit nothing about it? i don't believe anyone working was this heartless but I bet they symphatized but did nothing because it was just their jobs and sometimes that's even worse then being heartless.
do something when u have the authorities to goddamnit
I'm from the Netherlands, I went to Morgan while she was there, I was very young and ofcourse didn't know anything about animal rights. I just loved seeing killer whales so when I heard one was close by I dragged my parents with me to the 'dolfinarium'. back then they told us that she was going back into the wild, it made me very happ to know because even me as an 7 year old knew that this was a tiny tank. it makes me so sad to find out that we were told lies and that she is still in captivity.
THEY WHERE GOING TO RELEASE HER BUT THE DUTCH GOVERNMENT DEEMED HER UNRELEASABLE MAKING IT ILLEGAL TO PUT HER BACK INTO THE WILD. WHERE SHE WOULD ONLY DIE BECAUSE SHE WAS DEAF AND HER BELIEVED POD HASN'T BEEN SEEN SINCE 2005!
Morgan is young, they know that, right? And they still made her swim with the other whales (who, I'm sure, didn't have natural mate at that time)!
It's like throwing a little girl down a pit full of psychotic rapists!
Look at Morgan beaching herself on that sideline, pressed against the corner, looking so depressed and frightened. Dang, people, where's your heart?
Humans are heartless. Leave them in the ocean where they belong. A wise person once told me, God (Jesus) is just waiting to we completely destroy everything that he created. We are doing it at a fast rate. I heard Polar bears will probably be extinct in the next 20 to 30 years.
This breaks my heart, I appreciate the fact that all around the world, orca captures seem to be halting so maybe their population can grow and no more can live in captivity. I appreciate that they're doubling tank size and ending the orca breeding program. I do. But look into that animal's eyes and tell me it's happy. How can people still go to these facilities, how can they ignore the animal's obvious sufferings. There have been multiple orca suicide attempts in captivity, these animal's are incredibly intelligent and emotional. How can you go to any of these shows and think this is natural, that they look happy. It would essentially be locking up a 12 year old in a bath tub she can barely move around it. And only giving her extra food to quell hunger when she did a barrel roll. Then you introduce 3 or 4 random strangers who speak different languages and feel and think in this already cramped space. Then the only way to entertain yourself from endless boredom, to swim in cramped circles all day, every second. Then seeing people laugh and take pictures and screaming and blaring music every few hours. How could anyone go here and think that these animals are anywhere near happy.
Seaworld should be sued! It is against the law to capture a wild orca and keep them for entertainment purposes. The law was passed in the 1970s. They captured Morgan under false pretenses (it was supposed to be treat and then release and instead they kept her). Furthermore, wild female orcas don't start breeding until at least 14 years of age. Morgan is around 6. She is beaching herself to get away from the male orcas that want to rape and bully her. Seaworld also wants to start breeding her, something they promised they would stop doing. What the hell is wrong with you Seaworld!!!! Orcas are just as smart as humans, if not smarter. Their excuse of "we can't send captive wales back into the wild or they will die" is bullshit. You don't think they are smart enough to figure out how to hunt?? Captive wales that grew up in captivity have shown hunting skills with birds and whatever else comes into their tanks. Look at Keiko, who was released back into the wild after years in captivity. He lived for 5 years before he got pneumonia and died...and that was without a pod. Imagine what they would do if released in pods? Everyone says captive whales that grew up in captivity won't survive if released, but it has never been tested...so how would they know? They are imaginative and intelligent creatures. That's like saying a child who is kidnapped and missing for 40 years shouldn't be released from her captor because she wouldn't remember how to act if she was back with her family.
Imagine having a 6 year old daughter and she gets sick. You take her to the hospital and she gets better. Then, to your surprise and horror instead of the hospital returning her they decide that putting her in foster care is better. Imagine your daughter being put into a family made to do tricks and constantly having to hide from other members of that family from fear of being bullied and other unmentionables. What difference does it make that one is human and one is a whale? Every being deserves to be with their own family!
Seaworld, you are a disgusting organization. You promised you would no longer breed your whales and yet here you are, trying to breed a wild orca. Sick!
She has a hearing impairment and is the reason why she had to stay in captivity as she would be unable to navigate. Unfortunately they could not find the location of her own pod but did know which one it was.
Galaxy Gaming WHO CARES??? Are they a facility that keeps captive orcas in barren concrete pools on land? then they are greedy, selfish, heartless bastards. No matter what they call themselves. Loro Parque, Marineland, Seaworld whatever their name is, in the end they're all the same. If seaworld could get away with smaller tanks, it woulden't hesitate to do it.
Caitlyn Kelly The permit is online. The captain of the boat gave the footage of her capture. She wasn't stranded like they said. And wouldn't release her because they said she had behavioral problems. Made it up to keep her. They charged people to look at her in her rescue pool that she could literally stand up in it was so shallow. She recovered quickly and the deaf thing is going back and forth. To young to be pregnant. Gave her hormones. They did the same with 13 dolphins. Sent them to parks. Luckily some of them were released and are doing well.
Hmmmm good to know...I am from the Netherlands and will never ever go to the Dolfinarium....will never ever support it....they say they are here to help, but all they want is money. Just makes me sick. This Orca should have been released into the wild after it was all healthy again.
